Not really a bargain I think, as it is one of their standard plans and is always available?

    • +2

Agreed, I’ve had this same plan for at least two years. I use it as my burner phone for Gumtree ads and SMS verification.

      • Do you renew with just $10 on 2nd year?

        • +2

Yep i just add $10 each year and it builds up the credit, good for junk incoming confirmations etc on a spare fone.

        • Yes, that's the minimum amount you can add. However, I think any remaining amount rolls over; I'm pretty sure that last year I had about $2.50 credit left and after topping up by $10 it kept the remainder.

        • Yes, i just went to woolies and buy a $10 recharge voucher, have been keeping my in law number like this for past 3 years, as he never call anyone but did receive calls instead.

  • +12

Isn't the $5 Aldi Mobile starter kit a cheaper option?

    • +34

Aldi $5 PAYG is now 60 day expiry on included credit when activated from 24 May 2023.

So you'll need to recharge, the minimum is $15 ($20 for 365 days). Plus call rates are 15c per min, SMS 15c.

      • +10

That's good to know, I won't be buying another one.

      • Correct, I actived one 5$ ALDI maybe 2 weeks ago, and it ask me to add on 15$ or other. I was confused why I can not top up 60days later?

I used to try to test the signal, but don't want to spend at least 20$ on an unknown telecom company.

Don't have time to argue, just give up.

        • oh shi, i got my aldi $5 starter pack a coupl months ago, i haven't activated it yet so it'll no longsf last a year???1 😕

          • @AndrewMTG: I got one and activated it b4 the T&C change, and still have one unactivated and didn't realise till now. I might take it back.

            • @ShoeyAU: ah shoot so i messed up not activating before the tnc change

        • I thought whether to top up after activation is optional?

          Their T&C reads:
The Pay As You Go $5 plan comes with $5 of included credit to be spent on calls, messaging and data as outlined below. The expiry period of the included $5 credit is 60 days. The expiry period of the subsequent PAYG Top Up credit is 365 days.

      • +1

365 days expiry on PAYG Top Ups

So the number will remain active for the whole year except for the credit, right?

        • The credit stays too if you get the PAYG $15

      • +1

oh thanks for the info!! I used to use Amysim from 365 day PAYG, and then switched to Aldi because it's cheaper. Now, it's time to switch back LOL

  • Is there anything stopping you from putting this in an Apple Watch and just using it for phone calls?

    • +34

      The laws of physics.

(The Apple Watch doesn't have a sim tray)

      • +5

I've activated an eSim on Amaysim the other day. They don't support the same number in 2 sims but they definitely do support eSim.

      • +1

        Excellent observation. Many thanks.

    • +11

Can I use an amaysim eSIM with my wearable or smartwatch?

No, not yet, but watch this space!

      https://www.amaysim.com.au/plans/esim

      • +6

I have this plan as an esim in my samsung watch as a completely seperate plan and number, had to change a setting in the samsung app to allow a seperate plan on the watch, but it worked… then it was a pain getting the amaysim app to recognise that the esim was activated, but got there in the end.

        • Will give this a go. Cheers

        • +1

Hi can you please share the steps on how to set the esim to work on your samsung watch? Happy for you to DM. I've tried to with dual sim, where I tried to setup the esim, but it doesn't allow it since its a prepaid sim.

          • +3

@ClaudeVL: the trick was enabling the test esim feature in the app, then you can scan the esim qr code onto the watch, rather then trying to connect your phones sim… was about six months ago, so can't remember all the steps, but followed what people suggested on reddit, think it was this post and replies…. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https:/…

        • hey would you be able to explain how to do this? much appreciated

    • no. you will need to improvise few things

  • +4

Good of you to post it. Amaysim seem to have it not easily accessible on their site. Kind of hidden away.

  • +7

Can’t comment on amaysim and overseas texts.

But this is definitely possible with Optus’ Flex plan (as of Jan 2023 and ages before that). You need to add credit at least once every 6 months to keep it active, but you receive texts while roaming internationally for free.

I ported to Optus before a trip (their coverage here isn’t great), paid for a couple $1 recharges, and kept my number active for 5 months. Arrived back and ported away.

Not being able to receive SMSes while overseas nearly broke my partner. Her phone died and every important app/service wanted to text her Australian number before she could transfer/activate in the new phone. We were in the mobile shop for about 4 hours.

    • +5

There's a chance the Flex plans will be replaced with Flex Plus ones in September :( https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/News/Optus-prepai…

The $1-every-186-days Flex plan is grandfathered and not available to new subscribers, either :(

    • Charged me 2x $1 for some reason last time I renewed both the same on 2 numbers. Is it required internet/wifi to receive texts? or they have partnered mobile companies overseas hence then only for some countries I guess?

    • +11

I'm an Amaysim customer and can confirm it is free to receive SMS overseas. So far I've used it in USA and many south american countries with no issues at all

    • I had an Aldi sim for use internationally while I worked overseas for 3 years just to receive texts to maintain the ability to complete two factor authentication on several services . Was a great help when you need that Aussie number

  • +8

Prepaid packs at the grocery store are usually on sale that get you more credit like $10 for $30 credit, just remember to select long expiry when activating.

    • VF SP $30 180 DAYS
      VF SP $40 365 DAYS
      OP SP $30 186 DAYS

amaysim is good for recharge at the same price.

      • Optus have removed the long expiry option more than a year ago.
You can still do it through phone call or chat, but it takes forever.

        • Last time(within 4 weeks) I saw the option when activated a SIM.

          • +1

@Neoika: That is really weird, my last three long expiry are all through phone calls and chat as Long expiry option was not available on Windows or Android phone.

            • +1

@Vater Woods: I just did a test on a $2 SIM and it has the option to select long expiry. It could be the cause that when the SIM was purchased, i.e. after a cut-off date, the SIM loses the option.

In addition, I do not have a $30 SP at hand so that the result may vary.

    • Wish I’d thought of this a month ago

  • +3

You can change plans to these as well.

So if you get it during a time when Amaysim have a plan on sale for less than the Cashback given (one of the 'profit' deals), you can park your number for a year effectively for free.

Actually, more than a year because of the first month being on a different plan, and it isn't terminated straight away.

    • +4

I've kept a dormant number with them for years, and having a quick look at my account history, it's 14-16 months before they tell you they're really going to recycle your number. That's when i recharge with $10.

      • Thanks. Exactly what I wanted to know.

    • You can change plans to these as well.

I was wondering about that. There’s a 50% sale on currently for their 6 and 12 month plans, so if you get the 1 year plan for $60 now but don’t want to renew after the initial year for the standard $120, you can instead switch to this As You Go 365-day plan at $10 for the second year (minus data inclusions naturally)?

  • Any data included?

    • 5c/MB data, or add a data plan

Data plans start from $15/2GB and last for 28 days

      • +3

Use a free (or often better than free!) Boost monthly plan for data (if you have a dual sim phone). That's what I do, though with annual Woolies for calls (for the monthly 10% grocery discount, and bc I need Telstra reception).

        • +3

Never thought of that, good idea.

        • What woolies plan are you on? Link?

        • what do you mean by "Use a free (or often better than free!) Boost monthly plan for data" ? Do you have link which boost plan you refer to?

          • +1

            @X200T: Are you new here?

            • @wisdomtooth: i thought we're comparing with cheap way to park your number or yearly plan with low data, boost overall doesn't fall in this category vs amaysim in this case

              • +1

                @X200T:

or yearly plan with low data

… or a yearly plan plus a series of free — or better ;D — monthly data plans (the latter category is the one which Boost falls under).

      • Calculated by the KB or..?

  • +11

Currently on this plan from overseas. Can confirm that (a) you can apply for an esim; (b) you can receive free SMS on your Australian mobile number (handy for 2FA).

    • So free roaming for receive only SMS without International Roaming Pack?

      • +1

Yes, they have decent roaming packs too if you need calls and text

  • -1

Why I couldn't find the $10on the page?

  • I can't find the recharge options after 12 months on their website?

  • +1

Have been doing this for four years since I left. Receives texts fine

    • What about receiving calls? Are those free as well?

      • Pretty sure you have to pay for them. I just use it for 2FA texts when logging into bank accounts etc

    • +1

Are you using the e-sim? Or do you have a spare phone in addition to your international phone to receive Australian text while overseas?

      • +1

Sorry for the late reply. I have a dual sim phone and just use the Amaysim sim to receive texts

  • Looking for a cheap 12m plan for 2FA, eSIM and Telstra network. Can you guys please recommend?

  • aldi $5 kit for 1 year gone, and then this should be cheapest.

  • I've used a dormant Amaysim SIM overseas (Asia, the Americas) for years (up to 12 months without top up in any one stretch) and received SMS for free without problems in the recent past. In fact I would get messages from my bank every time I made an ATM withdrawal, immediately.

You can't receive calls for free though. I wasn't on this plan but just their regular month to month, but auto top up switched off.

  • Just download their app and showing as you go plan for $0?

    • Gave it a go with a virtual card on a maxed out account, and yeah… no go. It did try charging the 10 bucks. Yeah, not sure what the $0 is about. I did notice there is a field for a promo code, so maybe there was Chinese whispers between Marketing and Webdesign, and there is a promo free option. Or… $0 means PAYG?

  • +1

Luckliy im on postpaid so i have talk and text means i dont have to pay $10 yearly. Have 20 parked gold numbers for free (that ive managed to find while browsing their available numbers over the years)

    • "gold numbers"?

      • +1

        Yeh triple and quadriple digits
Like 048 XXX YY, 048 XXXXYY

Good thing about postpaid, you have unlimited numbers.

With prepaid you are restricted to 4 by law under your name. You declare this when you sign up a new prepaid service (that you do not have 4 services)

    • Lol I was looking at the same thing and found a gold number for free. All the new numbers start with 04789

  • Is answering a phone call free?

    • +1

Yes, but what i find about this plan, is when you switch your phone on and off, there is some data leak before you manage to switch data off

You will see the occational 10 and 15c charges due to the data leak

      • A little tip - disable or delete the APN associated with this SIM and then there will be no data transfer, even after reboot

        • Had to look it up; here is what Brave's AI says:

An Access Point Name (APN) is a set of details that your device needs to connect to mobile data.1 It is often pre-configured for your SIM card, but may need to be manually adjusted for your device. To configure data for your SIM card in your device, you need to know the three letters and the right APN.0 To view and edit your APN on your iPhone or iPad, insert your SIM card or use eSIM, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Network, and tap Cellular Data Network. If you don't see the option to use carrier settings, follow the steps below to enter your APN settings.2

  • Does anyone know what the last date to activate the sim is (say if I order one today)?

    • Why not just buy one when you need it?

      • I remember the sim delivery time took 3 weeks previously (for me) LOL

  • will keep in mind when my telstra prepaid expires in about 400 days.

    • You can set a reminder at the top of the page if you forget.

  • Incoming calls and text is the same rate as outgoing or free?

  • -4

Are there any practical uses for this?

  • where is the $10 credit >?

  • +2

You can also get the 365 days by letting a current prepaid plan expire, i.e., you use a pre-paid monthly before going overseas for several month and do not recharge/renew the monthly plan. Your number is still active and kept for 365 days, so you can receive texts still for 2FA or hear from others.

    • +1

Careful with that, don't think it's 365 days. Think it's more like 3-6 months (depending on how aggressive your telco is.) Kogan, for example, I think turns off your ability to receive in 3 months. While I think you can still get your number back, I think they're allowed to recycle your number (i.e. can't get it back) after 6 months.

Afaik, 365 days might be possible but not risk-free, depending on your telco.
