rather buy an apple refurb m1 16 for the same price

    • This deal is for the ones looking to buy M3 Pro 14". But M1 Pro is indeed a great choice.

      • Wasn't for me!

As per a more detailed version of a cracked screen in my comments below, not given what happened to my 14 year old daughter (when she simply closed it with a few pages of a draft handed to her by her teacher) and many others, with "Out of the 20 Macbook we have here, 3 have this problem" according to a comment in one of the two articles about a lawsuit in America on this inexcusable fragility and Apple's indifference to it and its customers. Me being a never-was Apple customer, but finally talked into it (now to my regret) in 2022 with children with two M1 Pro Macb0oks and two top of the range i-phones to 'pair' with them. At least I haven't already bought a laptop or phone for my younger daughter heading off high school next year.

    • Pardon my ignorance but are you saying M1 is better then M3? So this new Macbook is not good?

      • +7

Hes saying he'd prefer to have an extra 2 inches than marginally quicker brains

        • +1

If you come over to PC would you could have as many inches as you want.

      100%

  • 16GB tho..

  • 512gb tho

  • 14" m2 Pro refurbs on Apple store now too - cheaper than JB.

I'm debating an m2 10c/16gpu with 32gb RAM vs m2 12c/19gpu with 16gb ram. General use, but the power good for semi-pro photo editing and amateur video editing.

    • +1

Both are good but bear in mind the cores are divided into different number of efficiency and performance cores. You'll more likely reach the RAM limit faster if you're pro-pro use. I have the 12c/19g with 16GB and the thing hasn't skipped a beat.

    MacBook tho….

    Tho tho…

    Still got the notch…

    • I don't like the notch on iPhones but it doesn't bother me at all on the Mac

    • If you don't like the notch, you can change the resolution so it doesn't use the entire screen and voila - you have the lovely thick bezel like in the pre-notch era.

    MacBook Warning!

How crap is their durability? Or am I in the wrong?

Owner, through my children, of two MacBook Pros and after a, bugger Australian Consumer Law bad luck, phone call from Apple, my advice is (short of not caring about money, not really the Ozbargain demographic) don't buy for your kids!

My 14 year old daughter simply closed the laptop on some papers (like 4-5 pages) as she was handed them by her teacher (something I would have done on my cheap Acer laptops 100s of times) and this was enough to crack the screen, which she discovered when she opened it next period. Apple basically admitted that this was as per expected to happen and as such because she did that, again, bad luck.

Check yourself, but she checked and saw it is quite common and there's apparently even a lawsuit on America about it.

My daughter told me the 4 months into owning the laptop the school at assembly and by email sent out care advice that included this 'Never close the lid on a pencil or pen left on the keyboard (could crack the screen).' But sure, but papers are not a prn pencil or the equivalent, in physical substance or common sense use.

Ironically this all happened on the day I would have ordered a MacBook for my other daughter heading into year 7 next year, but undecided between air and MacBook. That's now on pause.

Anyway, I am going to pursue this matter further and will update.

By the way here, from the email mentioned above, is what the school sent suggesting how also undurable these Macs (almost all others have the Air) are when it comes to a bit of rain because I am sure the girls aren't using them as umbrellas…

    Dear all Students,

With all of the recent rain that we have been having, we have seen a spike in laptop repairs due to water damage. I thought it would be a good reminder to send this email to you all with tips on taking better care of your laptop.

      Have they tried rice?

      • +1

        LOL!

Won't have any left, because that's all the kids will be eating, after I end up paying for a repair on one MacBook let alone if this design fault happens again or or on the other MacBook.

Apple Now Facing Class Action Suit for Cracked M1 MacBook Screens
By Anton Shilov published September 17, 2021

'The firm is accusing Apple of knowingly selling laptops with fragile displays that tend to crack under normal use in some cases and then refusing to repair them without charge.'

'a large number of customers who have experienced unexpected screen cracks and were forced to pay $600 ~ $850 to Apple for repairs. Apple insists that screen cracks were not its fault, but were caused by mishandling or by a small item or particle becoming lodged between the keyboard and screen.'

Apple hit with lawsuit claiming M1 MacBook screens are 'defective'
Mike Peterson Apple Insider | Sep 15, 2021

"models ship with a concealed defect causing their screens to become easily cracked.'

"These problems often develop while the Class Laptops are closed; many Class Laptop owners have reported that they first observed cracking and/or display malfunction when opening their devices from a closed position. Others report that their screens cracked as they adjusted the screen's viewing angle in an ordinary manner," the lawsuit reads.

M2 MacBook Pro screen crack for no apparent reason

Similar to M1 MacBook Air screen cracking reports during normal use or overnight, without any apparent reason, my MacBook M2 pro screen suffered same. My mac is not even completely one year old, it was working perfectly before I went to sleep last night and when I woke up there was a crack on left side of the mac, after a few hours when I saw it again the crack became bigger and the whole display was black, before it was atleast working half side normally but then it wasn’t at all. I closed it properly, I did not damage it I’m any ways, it didn’t move the whole night. The mac from outside shows no damages on the screen but when switched on the screen display shows white lines and black screen. This had a already happened with over 3600 users and discussions have taken place in “MacBook air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason”, same has happened with me but now I’m M2 and MacBook Pro. The images attached below shows the spread of the crack. I can say with 100% confidence that it has not been physically damage

  • What’s the pick for a MacBook to take travelling and last forever?

Second hand MBP or m1/2 air?

13” fine but prefer a really nice screen

    • +1

Second hand MBP 14", unless every gram counts. Both have nice screens these days.

      • They didn’t seem as bright as an iPad which would also be handy with cellular but I think iPhone and Mac is best of both worlds
