Voice Only Plan (for Child)

Basically I want to give my son a phone so that he can make phone calls. The problem is that I don't want it to have internet capability at all. I don't mind if it can send text messages either way.

It would be a bonus if it had long expiry so I don't have pay for unused credit because last time I got a $5 monthly plan it wasn't used most of the time at end of month.

Basically he's at the age where he's starting to maybe go to the movies with his friends or go for a sleep over, etc. I just want him to be able to contact us.

  • Could also consider having a very small internet allowance. I mean I don't know the rationale behind not wanting internet capability, but if it's just to avoid spending time on media, having e.g. 1GB / month would be very useful, so he can check emails etc

Dodo do a $10/month plan with unlimited talk/text and 2gb of data that doesn't auto top up. https://www.dodo.com/mobile
I'm pretty sure you can then ring Dodo and have them disable the data functionality or you can do this manually in the phone itself.

I would think about perhaps having a talk with your son about responsible usage of a mobile phone. If you set up the phone as a child account you can then implement parental control settings to limit screen time, allowed apps, internet use, blocking inappropriate content etc. If using iPhone you could then also make use of the Find My functionality to check in on his location. You could make an appointment at the Apple Store to have them set this up for you.

Might need data for iMessage, Apple group chat, Google maps, train schedule, family WhatsApp etc…

Love that you call your child 'it'….. How old are they?

You could always disable data on the phone/change the apn. But a teenager will get around that ;)

Lol, I was talking about the phone plan! I had a laugh at that one, I honestly thought and had to double check, did I actually call my child it?

      • Get one of those annual pre-pay services and then stream 4K video till you exhaust data……

LOL really sounds like you're talking about the user, as they are the ones that use the internet and send messages. but fair enough :)

  • An old iPhone with a variety of restrictions. You can disable the browser, the App Store, you can even disable certain default apps, and disable the system browser that is summed in apps like Messages. Old iPhones are fairly cheap, it'll give your kid some iPhone cred. And you can even allow things like the Wikipedia app, in which case you'll want him to have a bit of data. There may be other learning apps you'd want him to have too.

    • Thanks, I've actually already got an iPhone SE 2nd gen for this exact purpose! ScreenTime is a blessing for parents.

  • Get a yearly prepaid sim on sale, around $90-100 a year. You want some data for messaging and gps tracking.

I got a Coles one for my son’s tracking watch.

If the phone calls aren't too long or frequent, you can get a Pay As You Go from Aldi Mobile or Lebara

Thanks, checked the Aldi Mobile one and it lets me buy $15 with a 365 day expiry. It's even with Telstra with 3G/4G so should have maximum availability 👍.

  • Amaysim= buy a pay as you. Then switch to 1 year at $60 (only for calls).

    Unfortunately Floptus
