What Should I Use to Top up Tyres at Home?

I want to pump my tyres and top them up at home so I don’t have to go to the petrol station.

What should I use to pump my car tyres in my garage?

I’ve been hearing about air compressors and portable tyre inflators but I’m not sure which to get.

Also are there any product recommendations?

Edit: for a lot of people asking why don’t I go to a service station. Atm I’m filling up at Costco which doesn’t have a tyre inflator I believe.

I could still go to a service station for tyres if it’s a better experience than doing it at home.

  • Many garage and cheaper home inflation options have very inaccurate gauges so you may be carefully filling to the incorrect pressure. Whatever you end up doing to get air in, buy at least a semi decent gauge.

  • I have a proper compressor with tyre guage and a portable 12v mini pump. I dont bother with any of them since it is easier to just stop at the automated servo pump.

  • I have a whole stack of compressors and hand/foot pumps, but 90% of the time I just use a cheap ($55) Baseus portable rechargeable mini air compressor I purchased on eBay. You can pretty much inflate one care tyre from flat on a single charge, or top up at least half a dozen tyres. It's quite slow (maybe 1 PSI increase per 15-20 seconds), but if you only need to add a few PSI to each tyre it's not a big issue.

  • Get a proper tank compressor, something like this (not affiliated) Stanley.

You will be amazed how useful something like this:-
    1. Pump up tyres
    2. Spray paint
    3. Clean filters (Saves me heaps, still have original Dyson Filter)
    4. Clean lawnmower
    5. Blow the dog ;)
    6. Unclog things (with a long enough hose)

  • I've had this for about 4 years now. Plugs into the 12v socket, still going strong.

I think it was about $70 when I bought it. It appears to be a bit more expensive right now, though.

  • +1

I use the Michelin 12V inflator with digital screen and flashlight.

Stores nicely, has a digital screen to see the current pressure, beeps when it's done, compact enough to fit under the boot mat next to the spare and sub. A little noisy, but probably not more than most and gets the job done.

It usually goes for $100, but can probably be had this week for $60.

The reviews were bad but mine worked fine for $20

  • Actually, I would advise always ‘using’ air to pump your tyres up!

    • I like how it’s large and faster but still has no specs not even any inflated ones.

  • I use a bike pump to top my tyres up once a fortnight. It only drops 1 or 2 psi max over this time period. I go for 32-34 psi - gives me a good balance between comfort and fuel economy. The tyre shops pumping tyres up to 40psi are trying to wear out your suspension components so you can come back to them again!

  • I used to have an Ozito inflator but then switched to the inflator that uses power from a cigarette lighter socket so I don't have to worry about charging it.
