This is great, thanks for posting.

The Omni Air is ranked 158 out of 213 helmets tested.

      This is a great resource.

If you feel that their testing method is sound, which talking to many helmet testers, manufacturers, they all feel there are some pretty severe flaws in their methods/weighting of scoring. These manufacturers (who score highly in these VT tests) are concerned that helmet designs may be altered to score higher here, which could have a real world problem of actually making them less safe.

There is a similar problem with a star like scoring system for motorcycle protection, it's easy to design a piece to score high in the tests, while actually being pretty average to poor in reality.

These star rating systems can be hugely valuable, but the testing methods and score weighting need to be sound.

Not certified to AS/NZS 2063:2008, so useless.

      • why useless? compliant with other international standards

        • Not sure if there would be legal/insurance issues were you to sustain an injury wearing it if it isn't certified for Aus? I have no clue just putting it out there.

        • Fine, I guess you are using it outside of Australia, or only on private land within Australia.

AS/NZS 2063:2008 is required for use within public places in Aus. So 99.9% of the places you plan to ride here.

          • @snuke: Is it unlawful to ride without a compliant helmet or is it for insurance?

            • @xtommyk: Unlawful.

I am curious about wider education (not judgmental), how long have you been in Australia, and how long have you considered cycling that you are unaware that this is a legal requirement and has been since 1990?.

              • @snuke: I cycle with a compliant helmet, I was just asking if it was unlawful if you imported a helmet that wasn't compliant with local standards. Do you get random checks by cops for the inside of the helmet for the AS/NZS sticker?

Not likely, but possible. I know of blitzes done in CBD areas from time to time, but I have only heard of this several years apart.

if it was unlawful if you imported a helmet that wasn't compliant with local standards.

No, just as though you could import a car form Japan or the US, it wouldn't be locally compliant or legal to use in public, but no in itself an illegal act.
I can't comment on indegogogogo, but many overseas cycling websites will not sell to Aus consumers for fear of litigation if that helmet is involved in a crash.

Remember, with Aus law, you as an importer (yes, anything you buy form an overseas website) are deemed manufacturer, you are held legally liable for whatever you import as though you made the item.

Thanks for the downvote for asking genuine questions to garner insight into the wider education the cycling industry does to allow general consumers to understand their requirements.

  • Which helmet can you recommend for a casual folding bike rider?

  • I love the features and styling of POC helmets but they’re too narrow for my head :( Giro and MET provided better fits for me.
