Mines been rock solid since I bought just over a year ago. Huge upgrade over my Xiaomi Mi Box S.

My 2017 model got stuck at 720p out of nowhere (connected to a 4K TV). It was the only resolution available in the options, and after trying everything I could think of and I could find on Google I finally emailed Nvidia support…

To my surprise, and remember we are talking about a 6 year old and out of warranty device, they sent me a new (refurbished) one in exchange for my faulty one. All postage was paid by them. They even organised a pickup from my address, I didn't have to go to the post office. If/when the one I have now stops working I'm buying a new one 100%

Still using my original 2015 as my main tv device and it's still incredible. Crazy that the price is so high after all these years

Have a (2017?) model that I got around 2018 as a replacement media device (have a WDTV that I'd still use if it wasn't for a bad HDMI port hah). I've given a rough guide as to my Shield "experience" periodically whenever a Shield deal appears on here (old man yells at cloud vibes!).

I got my Shield (came with the controller) from Harvey Norman of all places. I like it when it's configured properly, like the additional apps and things you can do with it. But for me the media playback is relatively hit and miss. It's fantastic when it works, but anything less than flawless playback can drive me bonkers at times. The Kodi app is good when it wants to work, but infuriating when I get frame skips + audio jumps out of nowhere. I solve the issues most of the time by way of changing the screen resolution and other associated settings in the options menu. But depending on the content (be it SD/HD) I still get the occasional playback glitch. Inquired about it on forums (and also here previously) and have been told "It's your tv" or "its the way your files have been encoded". I debunk those theories when other media devices (or even the media player when connecting the same external hard drive to the tv itself) plays back the same content flawlessly.

    • Heck, you also got a controller back then.

I have three of these and they're all rock solid, no issues whatsoever.

Essential to add your own launcher to get rid of the ads, admittedly this is a pain but it’s a once only job.

Stremio with a realdebrid account and your set!

    • And Tivimate….

    • Thank you for introducing me to this new world. Do we need to use a VPN for this?

      • +1

Nope. Real debrid masks what's going on

  • What is the main difference between this one and the Google Chromecast 4K?

    • +9

If you cant find any difference, you don't need it.

      • I currently own a Chromecast, but I'm considering upgrading to the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro. I primarily watch 4K movies and don't use my streaming device for gaming or multitasking. Could you clarify the specific differences in picture quality between these two devices, given that both support HDR10+?

Please update the darn thing already Nvidia.

    • dont they update it enough whats wrong with it?

      • +1

        Sorry, the hardware

        • Why? What do you want?

  • does it do wpa3? google tv does not.

  • +1

expensive - if you are in no rush , wait out for a deal like this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13511314/redir I paid $168 ( GG pricematch +$50 store credit ZipPay Promo)

    • +1

This is the cheapest price for the last 6 months.

  • What's the best third party launcher that removes all ads and is fast?

  • +2

Waiting for them to go back to $218

  • Can this do dolby vision in kodi?

    • +2

It can if you install a Kodi build that supports it. e.g. Maven build or the current v21 / betas. 'Normal' Kodi you get through play store doesn't support DV yet AFAIK.

    • Use Just Player app on the shield (its free). It plays Dolby Vision rips, including full Dolby Atmos, DTS-X. Never had a file in 4 years that it hasnt been able to play thats Dolby Vision. Probably close to 1000 files. Just make sure you turn all the required settings in the shield menu.

      • Only interested in using Kodi.

        • What? Why? unless your your using Kodi as a server like Plex. Never great to stream if you want the best picture. Theres always micro drop outs and quality drops back to less than optimum. If your using a hard drive for files then there is no need for Kodi only. Use Just Player for DV and Kodi for everything else

          • @Whisper Quiet: I use jellyfin as a backend across multiple devices

          • @Whisper Quiet: You don't know about Kodi add-ons with debrid it seems. Look it up.

            • @jaimex2: Im aware but they change the dolby vision profiles. So then new files wont play properly. Look it up!
Streaming 4K remux files over your internet is silly. Instead of having direct play with absolutely no loss, you let your internet decide whatever it its capable of at any given time. The whole point of 4K blurays is to get the best possible picture. Streaming it is the poor mans game

  • This is a good price for the best streaming box available but personally, I'd wait to see what Black Friday brings.

    • +1

      Wouldn't these be BF prices?

      • Maybe. We'll find out soon enough.

        • +1

          Bought anyway at $278 - 15% ultimate GC = $236.30. Pretty good I reckon.

          • +1

            @dockersrule: That's a good price for a great unit.

            Enjoy.

          • @dockersrule: Did good guys price match no drama?

            • @hessels92: Yep, no issues. I tried to get them to beat it but they used the old "below cost" reason.

  • Anyone else having issues with their unit?
    - remote disconnecting and requiring delete cache/data to reconnect
    - unable to be turned on and requiring a reset by replugging the power cable

Other than that it's working fine as a streaming box but the above issues make it quite annoying to use at times

    • Had no issues with my 2017 model. My 2019 model has randomly turned off here and there but always restarts without issue. Only occurs once every couple months.

      No other major issues.

    • Yeap. One of mine never wants to turn on. I give it a 5-10min head start if I wanna watch something
By then if it hasn’t kicked in I have to unplug (works everytime doing this but damn frustrating)

  • Upscale to 4k?

    • Yep. With AI.

  • +1

Lmao the choice between Amazon and HN. Who in their right mind would pick the latter.

    • Ruslan Kogan :)

  • +2

Best purchase to finally fix my Plex issues, TVs don't like high bitrate 4K.

  • How does this compare against Apple TV? Not worried about using Plex. Only using the streaming Apps.

Which device has less ads, fastest interface and easy to use for kids?

    • +1

If you're using it above board and solely streaming apps, then the ATV for sure.

  • Can the shield stream from a home media server, running truenas and Jellyfin?

    • I use Jellyfin on my shield, no issues with it.

    • It can. Just check that your media software is in Google Play store

  • I normally only watch YouTube on a 55 inch Samsung TV connected with Ethernet. Is there any point to buy this streaming device for me? Thx

    • -1

Not really. This chipset is old as shit and most modern TVs are on par now and in some regards better because at least TVs have AV1 support and full dolby vision support.

If you don't care about streaming and just want to watch your own content there are better boxes out there too.

      • Problem is all modern tvs I believe do not allow for passthrough of hd audio through to soundbar unless its from an external device so a switch is required if you want lossless audio associated with 4k blu ray quality.

  • My built in android TV on my Sony OLED drives me nuts with lag and also no Atmos support from Disney + now. Been considering getting one of these, but don't want to spend $300~ if it's not going to be much better? Sounds like some of these have similar problems?

    • -3

Just get a Chromecast it's much cheaper and faster.

  • No announcements yet but i can see a new model coming out next year.

  • -4

Lol, downgrade to the lowest firmware you can. This thing is as buggy as shit after android 9.0 plus it even has adds now. Do yourself a favor and buy a mini PC..

    • A mini pc that can’t play the content it can download.
I always find the comment section on these so funny. If you don’t know what one is or why they are better chances are they aren’t right for you.

      • Mini PCs can't play 4k ?? This shield struggles on anything larger than 5gb playback, wasn't my worst investment but I wouldn't be upgrading after all the bugs they introduced after the first time I did it. I'm on android 9.0 the last 2 years and it's working fine. They newer versions even have adds in the software lol..

        • +1

Yes your pc can’t play a lot of 4K codecs. Do some reading and come back to me with your media pc that is capable.

As I have said it’s widely known what these are good for. If you don’t know you probably don’t need one.

4K is not just 4K it’s a complex world of competing file types and codecs. Audio is the same.

    You're simply the best
    Better than all the rest
    Better than anyone
    Anyone I've ever met
Ooh, I'm stuck on your heart
I hang on every word you say
Don't tear us apart, no, no, no
Baby, I would rather be dead

  • -6

    Dinosaur box

    • Poor knowledge

  • This still seems expensive considering only in around March this year it was sub $230

  • Would there be any difference in speed, buffering etc. running torrserve on this vs. chromecast vs. TV original OS (Tizen, S90C)? 100/20 NBN.
