Amazon to Ditch Android in 'all of Its New Devices' Starting with Fire TV

I was in the market to get Firetv/google tv but came across this news that Amazon is soon moving to its in house VEGA OS instead of android. This might be a deciding factor for some as this will lead to fewer app support for sure.

Geez, this late in the game to be trying to branch out from Android OS.

Amazon hasn't really read the room, all Tv's are heading to Android, Phones are pretty much all Android.

Yeh. Android Tv is already considered better in terms of its clean interface. Their market share likely to take a hit. Especilly current gen firestick 4ks are a success of sort due to its affordability.

    • And most importantly
All the media streamers as well

Second hand Fire TV Sticks are about to become a Very Popular and sought after item!

Will this effect the Amazon app on Shield?

    • As in will it cause the Amazon app to happen on Shield?

      • As in will it stop working on Shield. :)

  • So all current devices will stay with Android? Like the Fire Max 4K 2023?

The very latest FireOS is based on Android 11, which was released 3 years ago. I think Amazon is just sick of having to synchronise all their changes to the AOSP mainline, and thinks having their own OS would be easier than building on top of AOSP.

But for consumers, abandoning an already established ecosystem just doesn't make sense.

Yeh, from the post, it looks like they want to strip all mobile related functionality as well. This sounds like a performance boost for tv features but only time will tell.

Various other companies tried this and didn't work in favour e.g Samsung tizon os, LG Web os

      • LG Web OS is basic but at least every streaming service has an app including Plex. Only thing missing is VPN support.

This might be more to do with Amazon and Google competing in smart home, streaming, cloud, devices, etc etc

        • Not all of the TV networks support it, and it creates ongoing issues with Netflix, who updates their apps every week or so, and refuse support for non-certified devices. Pulling Google from FireTV will force all Amazon's users to choose between Prime and Netflix, no real competition.

    Add AppleTV poll option?

Probably more a bigger deal for ppl who replace TVs every couple years.

    • What does this have to do with TVs?

      • -2

Gee dunno. Maybe TVs are involved?
What do you plug these new fangled gizmos into? Fridges?

@shxhshzhz: Cool! Time to bung my tinnies in the Bravia. Looks like the world got this tech all wrong

          I don't follow.

How is Amazon choosing to use a different OS a bigger deal for those who replace TVs more often than less often?

@Protractor: Another in a line of brain dead comments from you, but hey, gave you a chance to show that you had some brain cells.

@p1 ama: If you think there's no correlation between a device with apps that directly interacts with a TV ,(which as you know > via this site, are churned through like changing undies) as it's main role, and yet in your stellar pumpkin has nothing to do with a TV, then maybe you should introspect, stop flinging slurs around like a petulant toddler.

  • Good for competition but I prefer Android.

Where's the go banana poll option?

    • +1

Bananas grow in trees, not poles

      • It's too cold at the poles. Narnas prefer tropics

      • Everyone knows bananas grow in stands, same as money.

  • This will be a huge shame — FireTV was one of the very few Android boxes that ships without malware, and decent hardware specs that aren't made up like thousands of those on ebay/etc.

  • Jeff got a new girlfriend
    anyone to vote?

More plastic than an Amazon FireTV
