  • Before I purchase one myself, does anyone think Amazon will price match this? So I can use my discounted gift cards :)

    • I would imagine so if it doesn’t sell out first.

Edit: actually is it “Sold by Amazon”, otherwise it won’t be price matched.

      • Yeah sold by Amazon.

Edit: actually it’s sold by backbone, but ships by Amazon.

        • Then no, unless Backbone drops the price on Amazon themsleves.

I'm usually all for stand alone handhelds, but if anyone is considering buying the new PS portal when it arrives, consider this first.

Yes the portal has some small advantages over this and a phone combo, but I'm not sure if it's $200 odd worth.

I've used a Gamesir x2 and a Razor Kishi V1, and I'd say this is the best of the 3 in terms of comfort, support and controls.

    • What is your setup and how’s the latency when playing through the phone?

      • +1

I've never measured it specifically, but I've run both my old PS4 wireless (not flawless but playable) and my PS5 wireless (better) through an old Pixel 2XL I have. Decent but older router. I've tried a few open world and 2D fighting games and they're fine. I probably wouldn't play anything that requires minimal latency, but I'd not do that on the portal either.

    • True, except the new backbone model that allows phone cases is for iphone 15 only (unless there’s a new lightning port model) and i aint upgrading phones in the next 4 years.

      • I've got a case on the Pixel 2XL I use on it. Seems fine.

    • Would you have any recommendations that would fit a tablet? Was looking for one that would fit the Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2022. Using Moonlight with Sunshine as my setup.

      • +1

I don't think any of the USB-C connection pads will be big enough. You might have to use a Bluetooth controller? This won't fit anything bigger than 7 inch I reckon. Even that might be too much.

    • Does the backbone have adaptive triggers and/or haptics like the Dualsense? If not, that's another major advantage the portal has.

      • +1

No it doesn't, and yep you're right. If that's worth the $200 odd to you, get a portal.

    • +1

Yeah I’ve gone with this for an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Way cheaper (phone aside), much better display, works with games/services other than PlayStation including native running ones and a biggie for me…Bluetooth support.

The controls themselves on the PS Portal look nice but I’ve never minded the smaller sticks on my Switch so I’m sure I’ll live.

The added case support in V2 was important over some other options too.

  • Kishi 2? Or this? Waiting on a kishi (1) deal

    • this has switch sticks( too small imo), kishi have bigger sticks which is why i sold my backbone controller and kept kishi v2. if you got no issue with smaller sticks go with whatever is cheaper

  • What is difference between Xbox and PS edition?

    • +1

Button labels ABXY Vs symbols and colour= black/white

    • -1

      PS edition looks cooler.

    • +2

I believe only the PS edition can do remote play to ps5 using the ps remote play app

      • +2

Odd. Looks like on iOS both models are the same but on Android the PS Remote Play indeed only works with the PS model. Cancelled my black order to swap to white for the better compatibility. I mainly use iOS but the option to use Android is ideal.

        From https://playbackbone.com/au/platforms/playstation-remote-pla…

Plug your phone into the Backbone One* or any other compatible game controller.

*Note that only the Backbone One PlayStation® Edition is compatible with PS Remote Play on Android devices.

      • +1

For what it's worth, on Android the third party PSPlay app is more popular / less buggy than the official PS Remote Play app anyway and can be used with any controller

  • With the case not being on special, it may be worth looking at one JB has for half the price: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/3rd-earth-protection-case…

    • Good price. But like the look of the backbone official one. Grabbed one off Amazon with discounted GCs

  • Does anyone know if you need a Backbone+ subscription to use it with Steam in-home streaming?

  • -4

Just wait for the new sony playstation portal hand held

    • +1

This is $200 cheaper and can support all kinds of other ways to play games. It can help with streaming other systems/PC, emulation or naive Android.

    • +1

Why? I don’t have a PS5 nor do I intend on buying one. I bought this to be used strictly with my iPhone 15 pro.

  • I got this cheapo off aliexpress for $30.

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005871957964.html

The shoulder buttons are laughably cheap but it's bluetooth and can connect to many platforms. Works great with PSPlay.

    • Can't compare these 2. Backbone has physical usb c/ iPhone connector supposedly the movements are transmitted via them which means much less lag. Plus it will pass-thru charge the device at the same time if you plug in.

      Cheap ones are just Bluetooth

      • You can compare because they both aim to do the same thing.

Physical connection does have it's pros.

      • I recently got a cheap one as well (BSP D8), yes it's bluetooth, but with Hall effect joysticks, a battery and 1/3 the discounted price I'd still give the backbone a miss.

  • +1
    • Thanks. I thought they would drop too, but was too keen so ended up picking one up from backbone directly.

Managed to cancel my order with backbone and order on Amazon.

  • $118 from Big W and buy with 5% off cards from RAC. I can't see any indication of gen 1/2 from the web page though, may be luck of the draw?

    • +1

You can check here - and an indicator would be on the box.

I asked a few of my local JB and Big Ws and they are all Gen 1, since they all wouldn't have restocked. I bought from Amazon eventually, as they are definitely listed as Gen 2.

      • yep I didn't want to risk it. I was either gonna buy directly from backbone or through Amazon.. and I did, through Amazon :)
