Decent Metal Detector for under $200?

Long time listener, first time caller.

Looking for Metal Detector recommendations for Christmas for our Dad whose retired and lives by the beach. Ideally one that works half decently as he's a grumpy old man that might chuck it in the ocean if it fails on him one too many times.

Considering the Minelab Go-Find 22 Metal Detector based on a personal recommendation from a friend but also seen some questionable reviews so thought I'd throw it to the brains trust.

For under $200 you are not going to find anything of decent specs.

    • Brilliantly written series. Highly recommended.

      • Yeah it's great.

Just wondering, how would the user know if the detector didn't detect something?

Surely one of the first things you do is test it with your rings and other bits of metal?

Test it with a metal detector detector before use.

      • But how do you know the metal detector detector works ?!?

That's obvious, you use a metal detector detector detector.

          • @brendanm: I'm reading this in Tom Baker's voice.

Not even used would you get good one for 200

if hes going to launch it in the bay for finding nothing, dont buy a cheap shit one… or just go throw it in ocean yourself.

  • for Christmas for our Dad

    Make your own

It will be more personal and he'll appreciate it more

  • Superfluous.
If he's a Boomer everything he touches will turn to gold, anyway. Except the generations that follow. They seem to turn green, for some reason.

If he is going to the beach he needs a good machine. Cheapest I would recommend is the Minelab X-Terra Pro for $499. For double that you can get the excellent Minelab Equinox 600 which will provide years of enjoyment and find plenty of treasure.
No point detecting the beach with a cheap junky machine, the good stuff is in the wet sand and those will not be waterproof and will give a lot of false signals. I started metal detecting about two years ago with a Nox 600 and it's such an enjoyable and rewarding hobby, and it doesn't take long to earn back the cost of your machine if you get into it seriously.

    • What cool things have you found?

Loads of pre-decimal and decimal coins, WW2 army relics, old ship parts, various jewellery etc. Just great fun and you never know what will turn up. I take mine everywhere I go and hit parks, sidewalks etc. I seem to have a never ending supply of gold coins which come in handy for coffee/snacks/fuel etc :P

    • Thanks for sharing this info!

If you're buying new the cheapest beach detector is the Go Find 22. The coil is waterproof but the control box isn't. Currently on Black Friday offer at Anaconda for $169.
