  • @polarq I'm in the same boat currently own the mango and looking for an upgrade. it seems the only benefit For the Slate Plus is the EAP connectivity. The Beryl doesn't have this option but i believe Mac clone gets around this. The beryl seems to be faster all round when using wireguard and Vpn client. both have around the same footprint and power requirements. I'm by no means an expert on these, hopefully someone can chime in with a better understanding on Both.

do you know what the benefits of EAP are?

      • Some (mainly higher end) organisations will have EAP protected WiFi e.g Eduroam in Education where u need a username and password to login, not just a password.

Umm personally don't get too hung up on speed if you're using this as a travel router. I mean are you going to have a 2.5Gbps Ethernet wired connection in a hotel? Definitely not in Australia.

Do you need to steam 8k video when your on holiday?

And don't forget if you're using a VPN back to your house in Oz which is useful for streaming things like abc iview or sbs ondemand which recognises quite a few of the commercial VPN providers and blocks them then your download speed is only as good as you home upload speed. So my 100/20 connection means my max home VPN speed will be 20Mbps (Thanks Mal and Tony). That being said as mentioned above that's fine to catchup on the local news or a few Aussie shows.

    I have this. It's excellent

    • Same.

Any of these have a built in battery?

    • no

      • +1

Actually they do make one with a battery.

        • Great, can you link the Gl.inet wifi travel router with built in battery.

          • @arsenal1: Look a few comments below

            • @Telios: My Response was in relation to the Item posted and question about Travel Routers, Models Mango,Slate,Beryl etc not having internal battries. Not about a 4g lite Router.

              • @arsenal1: There's no built in battery router only however given that most of the routers require less than 10W max (e.g. the Beryl AX draws <8W , the Slate Plus <6.5W At the extreme the AR300M (Shadow) draws <2W ) then you can always use any "modern" external power bank to run them when you're out and about.

                • @Limbot: I know, I've said this twice in this post.???
You may need to explain this to @telios. Thanks

We due to go overseas next year on holiday and Ive been keeping an eye on these.
Seems interesting but I'm just wary about lugging too many devices around.
This router would be ideal if it had an in-built battery and ability to insert a SIM card.
My use case would be - get a local SIM card (for heavy data usage) in the country we are visiting and insert into router. Our devices would be connected to the routers WiFI SSID and we dont need to connect to new wifi networks for every place we visit.
In hotels, we could connect the router to the hotels wifi if needed.

    • Great question 👍. I too am looking for a decent router that I can put a local sim card in.

    • nevermind - looks this (https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/en/3/setup/gl-xe300/internet…) is what I need!
(apart from the waayyy lower specs on the GL-XE300)

      • If you're happy with a 4G Cat 6 device you could look at the E750 Mudi.
        https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-e750/

The newer unit is the Puli AX which is a 5G unit. Not yet on Amazon Au though.
        https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-xe3000/

        • @Limbot The newer unit is the Puli AX which is a 5G unit.- how does this work. I land in the country, get a sim card with 120GB data, insert in this unit at home. And then I get a home WI-FI I can connect the laptop and TV etc to? I shall be using this in Fiji with either Vodaphone or Digicel network. I hope no issues connecting to their networks with such a device (with their sim inserted) to setup a in home Wi-Fi. I just need something solid which will work please. And what is the cost? Thanks in advance.

@FBI: All gl. Inet routers basically take an internet source :wired, WiFi or mobile data and work as a router. They're based on OpenWRT with a gl. Inet interface that simplifies things like setting up a Wireguard server or client or setting up shared storage.

So yes buy a sim card install into the Puli and connect all your devices. Since Amazon reps were dropped from posting due to dodgy practices by some I don't have anywhere as much to do with gl. Inet at the moment but I'll reach out and see if I can get an availability and price for the Puli AX.

            • @Limbot: They've advised it won't be available from Amazon. You have to buy direct from their store

If you can do without battery power you can look at the Spitz AX from Amazon Au.

            • @Limbot: Many thanks for your assistance. Be great if i can get a price please.

    • I was thinking like what you are now but found it easier and cheaper to do the following:

1x Micro Router like this one… this for when there are local Wi-Fi access points.

eSIMs for the rest. Managed to do a 2 week trip spending only $40 on 2 eSIMS with data and the rest came from the Wi-Fi access points.

Unless you need to pull out a laptop to do work while not being near a Wi-Fi point, this was economical and saved me carrying extra weight.

If you have a portable battery, you can do what I did with my Slate, which was power it on using the battery and then whenever I stopped somewhere I would link the public Wi-Fi to the Slate.

      • After looking at prices & specs of alternatives (routers with built-in SIM card slots, battery backup, features etc) I think you are right.
Its not worth the extra $$$ for a travel router that does everything I'm after in one device.

I think the way forward is 1x GL.inet GL-MT3000 (Beryl AX) + portable battery (when required).
besides we can always get a 4G USB dongle if really needed and plug into this router.

        • Have always got away with Hotel WiFi and a gl.inet router and sim cards from SIMsdirect or purchased locally on everyone's phone on my overseas trips. Never found the need for a portable 4G router (and I do have them)

  • Got this one at last deal, using it now on holiday in Thailand, it is amazingly easy to set up and use. I set up same as my home network [password, Ssid], conects to the hotel wifi, if hotel requires log in, once my phone connected to the router the hotels log in window pops up. Is easier than i thought. Very happy.

Used this on my cruise with Princess Cruises last week, worked like a charm. 5 devices connected no issues.

  • Is this capable of being assigned an eSIM?

    • This unit is not capable of 4/5G by itself. Those units that do support mobile internet only support physical sims.

  • Mine arrived today.

But it only came with the AU plug. I saw youtube reviews had 3 different plugs for this model.

Is mine missing 2 plugs? Whats the point of a travel router when it only has the AU plug?

  • this deal is back again; would be great if someone can please re-open this.

    • Is/was it? Comes up as $159 now.

      • +1

Should be gone already. I ordered one with discounted price and is on the way for delivery next week.

  • does anyone use this as a main router? How is it as just another ap point for speed?
