  • Great price on the Barista Express!

  • -1

Do you think it will get any cheaper by Friday with other deals?

  • +1

Tempting but I do like the stainless steel look.

    • +1

Unless they’ve changed the process, the Black Sesame colour is a plastic coating and scratches/chips/dents very easily

      Source: 5 years of experience

      • +2

We just got one for our work lunch room and within a week the coating had been scratched off in multiple spots.

  • +1

ooooh thankyou! I have been waiting on the barista express to drop for months !

  • Xpress or Pro?

    • +1

I would go with Pro. But I like the meter on the express. Easy to tune the machine for new beans.

      • Honestly such a gimmic imo. Looks cool but never used it for dialing in. Always looked at flow and timing. Also bottomless portafilter changed the game

        • +1

The trick is that if the pre-infusion pressure is at 9:30 position and the full pressure is at 1 o clock, your grind is ideally dialled in. I then set the flow timer for the new beans based on a weighing machine. Its not perfect, but its close to it. Since we use it with milk, does not make any difference in taste.

  • Good price on the express. Love mine.

    • How’s the in-built grinder going? Does it grind fine enough?

      • Yep. Have tried many, many different types and brands of beans. Handles the 'oily' beans and the drier beans just fine - with a few minor tweaks to grind and amount of course.
Have been using it for at least two cups a day every day for about a year now, not even cleaned it once (the grinder, not the coffee machine 😆), runs perfectly. No doubt a standalone is better, but I certainly consider it diminishing returns after a year of good home coffee with the express…

        • What’s your go to beans and your extraction workflow? Do you folllow the 2x yield between 20-30 secs?

          • @mrXO: It's all personal preference. I pick beans that i love the taste of. But do keep in mind, the grinder is not that great and not all beans will work well. I especially found it hard to dial in light roast.

My go to are Toby's Estate Wooloomooloo, Coffee Alchemy Goodness Galileo, and Inistudio First Scene

I follow the 2x yeild, but they say 1.5-2x is ideal and yeah 25 seconds ish

          • @mrXO: Doing an 18-20g of ground beans to 45ml at the moment with Killer coffee medium blend. External grind size 3, internal 4 or 5 I think. Grind amount bang on middle.
There seems to be a really good amount of crema in the Killer blends and shot duration is much much longer too, so definitely get the good 20-30 seconds pull, and pressure right in the zone.

Only blend I've come across with similar good crema was a St Ali one, which is damn expensive (and controversial).

ALDI single origin (Brazil I think?) was 18g/35-40ml and a much shorter shot duration. Finer grind size required too. Good smooth taste, but it's gone up quite a bit in price and there's not one close so don't get it frequently enough.

Lavazza oro was similar to ALDI and came out quite good, surprisingly. Had low expectations I guess, but I'll get it again if there's nothing else on special.

Top of my head I can't think of the others, tried a few of the 'emergency' supermarket brands - one with the anchor was acceptable. I know there's another 'major' boutique I've ordered from as well but for the life of me can't remember right now. I might need a cup 😆.

I adjust and measure when I change bean brand or blend. I don't bother between bags of the same make and blend. Takes an extra ten seconds. I got an OXO angled measuring cup to check.

Anyway, that's a lot of words for I'm super happy with making my own coffee 😆

      • Had mine for 2 years and the grinder broke about 6 months ago. Costs $300+ to have it replaced/repaired which to me isn't worth it considering the price of a new one. So now we use an external grinder and are waiting for a really good deal on a new one or a better model

        • How did you break it, if warranty wouldn't cover it?

          • @Ulysses31: It just broke on its own, stopped working randomly. Warranty period is 1 or 2 years and it's outside that time period

            • @iluvbargainz: Sorry, I misread. I thought you wrote that it broke within 6mths.

I bought Breville, but each item is seperate, when each was heavily discounted. Started with the BMF600 frother (used with Nespresso machine), then got the BES500BSS Bambino Plus & BCG820BSS Smart Grinder Pro.

  • +1

I'm not a coffee aficionado, but the Barista Express combined with mostly Airjo Bean Deals has been a massive quality of coffee life improver. Fresh beans make a big difference to getting the dial to sit in the sweet spot. Highly recommended

    • +2

Not to mention the savings on making a coffee or two a day compared to a coffee shop

    • +1

If you haven't already, you should try Lime blue deals too, I like them more then a few blends I tried on airjo you can also order in advance on their sales so you can skip around for waiting for next deal

  • +1

These are also $420.50 with BF22AU (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364543070180) refrub @ the Breville store if you want to roll the dice at a lower price point.
