Synology NAS Deals? Black Friday Coming up

I'm in the market for a DS918 or a DS923 but the price hasn't seemed to budge recently. Just in the market for a 4bay Synology.

  • You missed this less than two days ago, but same price and in stock here with the BF22AU code.

    • $799 on Amazon AU too I see https://www.amazon.com.au/Synology-DiskStation-DS923-4-Bay-D…. Comes up as $775 on the ebay link with that code for me.

        Extra 2% for Plus members.

        • Thanks, bought the ds923+ for $755. Had been watching videos all day on ds923+ vs ds423+ vs the cheaper Terramaster models. But finally decided transcoding wasn't needed, and eveyone raves about the reliability and better apps on Synology so it was time to invest in quality.

Every year I wanted to upgrade my 1511+ but at the end feel it's still running well so what for

  • DS918 has been discontinued, unless you are looking for 2nd hand, you will not find one at any price brand new.

    • the ds423+ seems like a good replacement to the good ol' 918. (specifically the ds423+ not the plain ds423)

ds423+ shares this with the ds918+:
      - celeron quad core (tho the 423+ is faster)
      - gpu (!)
      - dual 1gbe (yeah, not 2.5, but dsm 7.2 brings multichannel SMB so could effectively get 2gigabit on windows shares)
      - non-ecc (cheap) ram
      - docker/container manager (better options out there, but using built-in is easy)
      - two usb ports

ds423+ has this over the 918:
      - inflation adjusted, cheaper (both were around 600-800, but 2018 vs 2023)
      - nvme storage pool official support

other than the eSATA port and maybe support for more ram, not sure what the 918 has over the little 423+

anyone got thoughts or something im missing here?

  • I'm looking for ds1522+
    Getting 5xSeagate EXOS X16 16TB
Not sure if I should go for synology ram and ssd nvme this time or get alternative brand as last time…

Synology ram is super overpriced, get any brand that is the best price, you wont notice a difference.

Same for nvme, get cache nvme drives specifically used for cache.

      • Yeah, i know. I have a1520+ with other brand ram and nvme cache. All aok. The pain is choosing the right alternative ram and getting ecc.

Also, i got to do research on how long it takes in time for the rebuild to replace hdd from 5x10tb to 5x16tb on 1520+.
Apparently you replace 2 at a time.. So i hope the last one goes ok. If it takes week(s), I'm thinking of getting a 1522+ with the 5x16tb hdd and ram, nvme cache.

        What would you do?
        What model do you have?

        Thanks.

  • Looking at getting my first NAS mainly as Google photo replacement and to consolidate other external hard drive backups. I may use Surveillance one day.

I'll be taking a backup of the NAS off-site regularly.

I think the DS223 4TB is suitable? Is this bundle reasonable? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/235095181708

I have 22% off with Black Friday code making it $584.

I know the Plus series are the superior product. Just not sure if I will use the extra features (don't use Plex or video/music streaming). DS224+ is on sale for $511 on ebay with BF code.
