Uber for January 1st Will There Be Any Drivers Picking up?

Hi there, I used Uber often but never on Christmas or New Year so this time I'm going to the airport on Jan 1st at 4:30am picking up from Parramatta area.

Has anyone tried this before will there be any drivers? :)

Surely they’ll sting ya on surge pricing

    • If there is money to be made, the Uber drivers will definitely be there.
      Especially with surge pricing

    1300 TOUT

  • Yeah of course there will be. annual Net Overseas Migration ticking along at 500k+, PM for Uber drivers just cant import enough

  • 100% there will be

Might be cheaper and easier to book a limo.

  • Depends if they picked up the night before…

Parramatta/Northmead is Uber HQ should be safe though…

    • I will reserve 2 weeks ahead hope that will make it easier?

I've reserved/booked Ubers well in advance. Means nothing.

Uber doesn't seem to look for an available driver until 15mins before pickup.

F'n useless. Ended up resorting to taxis.

Yeah, I've booked early morning airport trips and had them cancel after accepting and it just cycles through finding someone. It's an absolute pain.

Taxi driver will probably be late but at least they won't cancel.

I'd prebook someone (the private hire/fancy car type people) as its not that much more than a taxi and they'll specifically have someone booked in for the drive for you

Both taxi and uber will allocate a driver right shortly before your pick up time which to me is too risky for heading to the airport when you really need it

    • Yeah I'd reserve 2 weeks ahead Im just not sure if they will be on time on New Year day that early :)

      • +1

        Won't guarantee you a ride.

      • +1

That's what I mean though - when I say shortly before I mean like within 30mins of your pick up time is when it will try to find someone for you - if it can't then tough luck - doesn't matter how far in advance you booked it - that is completely meaningless and isn't actually booking or guaranteeing you anything.

He accepts the risk to potentially save $5

I can’t wait for a post on January 1 about how his Uber didn’t show up and he missed his flight

I hear if you go to the airport a Limo driver will take you home for $120

    • Some of them throw in a free panto on the side, right near the exit.

  • Of course. Asian never rest.
Try go to Cabramatta on Xmas day

  • There's a massive oversupply of Uber drivers now with the cost of living increase. Will be no problem.

    • It may sound evil but I like that :)

Great for the consumer in an unregulated supply and demand market. Unethical for the workers.

        • unregulated

Key word. Works for and against the consumer, but from my experience mostly against.

        • Taxi industry tears roll down

      • Hope you have travel insurance for your missed floght.

When Uber guarantee pick up I'll believe that BS.
There is no guarantee from Uber ever, sure they'll take a booking, just don't rely on being picked up.
Busy time, surge gouging (cough - sorry pricing), random cancellation, driving in wrong direction so you'll cancel.
Uber is broken. It's a mess. Avoid.

    • And with increased immigration

  • better to get taxi during high uber surge

  • Uber doesn't cease operations because of holidays, there are always drivers around, just be aware that they sometimes have surcharges and higher fees depending on demand. I'd always recommend keeping at least one taxi company's phone number on hand so you have a backup if required.

For going to the airport, you can usually get a shared shuttle bus service that comes around to pick you up at your house which is usually reasonably priced, but I don't know if they operate that early in the morning. It's been years since I used an airport shuttle service personally, but a quick search turned up https://www.con-x-ion.com/ but there are many of these airport shuttle services so maybe look around and see whether something like that will meet your needs.

"they sometimes have surcharges and higher fees" = gouge.

Just re-gouge them equally when it comes to payment (wink)

Might be able to get an airport hotel room for the night for cheaper than an Uber on NYE with potential surge pricing.

  • Or another bargainer in the area might take you

  • cheaper & more reliable to go by train for that distance.

  • How many people are travelling with you?

And since this is ozbargain, if you can leave earlier, and from Parramatta station, you can get to the airport via the Nightride bus for < $4.

  • 100% will be there, minimum fee $200 +++
expect your pick up to be cancelled at least 3 times as they jack up the price tho

  • I have a guy who I use. PM me if interested.
    I'm also close to Parra.

He does baby seats etc too if needed.

Just a happy customer, not related
