This is gracious and enticing with blackcurrant, dark cherry, anise, green olive and roasted nut characters on the nose, followed by a succulent palate displaying excellent fruit power and substance. Fine-grained tannins provide wonderful structure and frame to this delectably appealing Cabernet. At its best: now to 2037. 94pts

  • Whilst OP is unable to mention, this is probably the William Pile Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 by Devitt & Moore at $75 a bottle and also sold at Dan Murphy for $900 a case.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is a fruit-driven wine with bold notes of blackcurrant, plum, and cherry. With touches of subtle oak, chocolate, and vanilla bean, a complete, rich round palate will make a lasting impression.

    Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
    Vintage: 2020
    Region: Coonawarra

Careful! It is NOT sold at Dan's. You may have been scammed. That was a third-party online marketplace link, where they set their own inflated prices - which NEVER sell - in order to make the fake discount look good.

Note that Devitt & Moore is not a real winery. They just buy wine cheap and bottle or label it.

I can't comment on the wine, but the sales practises are very dodgy.

      • Thanks. Should have done more research.

Their previous 'deal' on OzBargain (with a similar RRP) was their 2019 Barossa Shiraz. Also a Devitt & Moore label.

Good catch, thanks for educating. Was thinking something was off as there was very little to be found when googling this winery.

I looked into the review source. This guy "wine orbit" charges wineries to submit bottles to him for tasting.. and while the writing is suitably vague it is possible it is saying that the review is guaranteed to be 80+. https://www.wineorbit.co.nz/trade_section

"You are guaranteed to receive an independently written wine review by a senior wine judge for wines rated above 3 stars or 80 points."

Checked out the linked facebook page and 7 weeks ago a woman writes this comment:

"Sorry to say but this is absolutely terrible and the last 3 or 4 Wine Orbit wines I've bought have been equally undesirable. Especially since I purchased them due to your gold 5 star rating. Might I ask what qualifies your pallet as a wine connoisseur?!?!"

I'm not going to accuse anyone of anything here without more evidence but… something stinks.

        • With most wine grapes wholesale under $1/kg or less, and the median retail price about $10 /bottle, there is scope for good profit in the wine industry, but it can be the Wild West.

          • @bargaino: I doubt there is a wine producer in Australia that shares optimise as to the profitability of wine at $10 a bottle.

            • @johnshirazman: That is the median retail. Of course it is hard for small producers as they lack economies of scale in distribution and marketing.

Actual manufacture of wine in bulk vats is very cheap.
The biggest cost for producers, after grapes, is bottling and packaging, which adds around 50c/bottle.
Premium wines that a barrel-matured cost a bit more due to the labour required, adding $473/kl mean (35c/bottle).

The real money goes to distribution and retail. Hence the incentive for direct sales. What cut does dozendeals take?

              • @bargaino: Retail margins can vary, typically ranging between 25-40%

Additionally, the 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the Wine Equalisation Tax (WET) at 29% are crucial considerations, impacting the final cost of the $10 bottle of wine.

It's also worth noting the report attached in 8 years old, so with inflation hovering around 6% it's somewhat out of date.

  • Bought 4 cases but had to put through 4 separate orders to get the $130 price per case.

  • Received a case of Devitt & Moore "Sunderland" Cab Sauv 2020. Available through Dan Murphys for $432/case - far short of the claimed "Selling [from] Dans at close to $1000 a dozen."

    • We had an issue with the warehouse sending the wrong wine, it'll be resolved asap.

Please DM me if you had an issue

    • +1

Yep same here…did this get resolved for you?

      • Yeah, it did. I had the real deal delivered today.

I also got offered what I thought was a pretty reasonable price to keep the carton that was wrongly delivered. Which I think I've nearly finished. :/

        • How was the wine? Did it taste like a $75 RRP bottle?

          • @InspironN5110: This wine is very good. I can't say I drink many wines that RRP for $75, but it's in a different ballpark to wines that RRP for $10.83.
