Want to Switch Away from Telstra with Home Phone, Do I Need a New Modem?

With the increase in Telstra pricing to $100, I want my relatives to move away from Telstra. But they use the home phone service. I'm considering Leaptel and I can add a new modem (tp-link vx230v) for an extra $170 incl postage, but that reduces the price advantage. Will the home phone service with Leaptel work with the Telstra modem (Smart Modem Gen 2)? What would be the difference if I also take the FTTP upgrade? Would that change the home phone compatibility? We're using normal phones and not VOIP. Also, would switching to FTTP limit the minimum plans I can get? i.e. If I'm happy with 50Mbps plan, can I still get that plan 12mths later when the FTTP subsidy ends.

    Meh, then most likely best to stay with Telstra in that case if you want to use the home phone as you'll need a new modem.

    Nope, while the Telstra smart modem is basically unlocked the phone side is locked to Telstra. Leaptel will need a modem with unlocked VoIP setup.

    Well all home phones on NBN are VoIP, so yo kinda are.

      Re VoIP phone, might be talking about the handset type and not connection. I also use normal phones on my VoIP connection via an ATA device.

        Yes, normal phone attached to the appropriate port on the Telstra modem.

    Telstra modem will be fine if you just need internet in 95% of cases. If rooted potentially all but never tried TPG Vlan Tagging.

    Home phone, all ISP supplied modems are locked to their own network. You can buy a SIP device that you can enter details, but again if you buy a rooted Smart modem you can do the same thing.
    I set clients up with Crazytel. $11 a month ($1 is for line rental) and $10 for unlimited local and mobile calls.
    That way you aren’t locked your internet. If you go with Leaptel and hate it, jump ship and go with Superloop, and Spintel, etc etc etc.

    There are 2 white Telstra smart modems out there. One is LH1000. Can’t be rooted. The other is DJA0231, it can’t be rooted. Obviously if you have Gen 3, that’s fine and the older DJA0230 can be rooted too.

    Yeah absolutely. Unfortunately it’s a bit of a process (can take about a week to churn over though).

    The difference is faster download and upload speed if they want them and FTTP is the best for reliability. No FTTP doesn't change home phone compatibility.

    You can swap back to 50Mbps when the deal ends. Swap ISP again to get the best deal.
