  • Could you plug these into ps5 controller or does it need an amp?

    • I haven't tried them with a PS controller but I can tell you that the HD600 (a similar model) sounded disappointing without an amp. I'd buy them if you're prepared to get an amp but otherwise there are probably better choices if you don't wanna spend the extra cash. Better informed peeps could probably offer some suggestions as to alternatives.

I've tried my Sennheiser 58X, 599, and 560S in the PS5 controller and they all sounded like complete garbage. The Xbox One/Series controllers on the other hand sounded okay.

The HD6XX and above models are designed for music, not gaming.

These were too quiet for me when driven by a PS5 controller. My PC drives them fine but I ended up getting a Creative X4 just to make it easier to toggle between my PC and PS5.

      • Thanks. Much appreciated

      • Hey mate how's the X4 go on the ps5? I've got the creative G3 at the moment and it just powers my sennheiser HD560s enough. Was looking for something more powerful. Have been considering the X4 or the G6 from creative.

        • The max volume is uncomfortably loud for me but this could be just subjective. Setting it to high gain boosts the max volume a bit more as well.

          • @quanticism: Thanks for the reply mate. Ended up buying a G6. Will see how that goes with the ps5.

    • +1

I plug mine in frequently and they sound really fine to me.

Sure they're better playing .flacs on my phone through a dac/amp, and i'm sure they're better again with a standalone headphone amp, but they're still totally decent to my ears.

I run with the PS5 volume at about 30-40% when I use them. Any louder is too loud for me. Definitely not needing to max the volume and still not enough volume, I've never experienced that with any source that I've used actually.

      • Your saying that the dualsense controller can power 300ohm headphones? I'm genuinely interested because everything online seems to say that 50ohms is the upper limit

        • +1

100% man! I'm literally doing it right now. 3D audio is pretty sweet on the PS5.

Just to test it i put the volume to 100. it's way too loud and didn't sound great either, but they definitely are working.

  • That's outstanding

If only our $A is stronger.

  • Great price

The Sennheiser HD 58x is well priced also at US$129.

Or you can get the HD599 SE for $125aud delivered which is an awesome deal itself. There's also an easy mod you can do to add a boom pro mic to it if you want to use it for gaming and etc.

Yeah this is an amazing deal. I've caught myself staring at their listing for a while, but each time I've talked myself out of it, makes no sense seeing I already own the HD6xx's.

What a great deal though. I was tempted to buy a set for one of my kids for xmas, but they're all at the age where they're stoked with anything, so it feels like overkill.

      • The 598/599s and the 600s are all great headphones. The 598/599 has a more comfortable headband though. The 600s get uncomfortably after an hour because the headband doesn't go over the centre of the head.

        • +1

My 6XX are fine for much longer than that

        • Think the 600 series headband wears in better than the 500 series, at least if you have a large head.

I've got a really old set of hd650s and they're the most comfortable headphones I've tried.

I just recently bought some hd560s and if I have the headband low enough to rest on my head, the band isn't wide enough, so it forces the headphones to angle outward and the bottom of the earcup doesn't contact my head

    These are great. Love mine.

Anyone out there recommend a closed back headphone that sits around the same pricing/quality tier? Occasionally working on the laptop in public places, i.e. libraries, and looking for something to drown out background chit chat.

      AKG K361 or K371

      • +1

Vastly prefer my Elegia set (from A2A) to my K371s

        • Might be worth springing for a Maxwell at the Elegia price point.

          • +1

@DigitalAnalog: Thanks for suggestions. Going to keep price low for these as I'm only listening to instrumental music on Spotify while working. Just wanted the close back as passive noise reduction. In which case, probably should have mentioned, good fit (subjective, I know) is probably more important than soundstage, detail, tonality etc etc for my use case.

        • +1

I like mine too, after eq.

    • +1

I grabbed a pair of Senheisser Momentum 3 headphones from JB Hifi for $200, they're pretty great. I can also recommend the Sony XM4 headphones. If you can get either of those for under $300 you've done well.

I much prefer my HD6xx's when I can though, but they don't make sense to travel with.

  • +1

    Damn that's a good price

I literally got mine delivered 10min ago from the previous deal! For those wondering, a decent PC mobo will power them to a decent enough volume. I'm still waiting on the amp I ordered but with a gigabyte z390 aorus pro I'm happy with the volume at around 75% volume.

I'm sure it will sound a lot better with the amp/dac but if you're on the fence about this cause you can't/don't want to buy and amp, just pull the trigger. It will be fine! I haven't tried it with a mobile but I think it would be ok 90% of the time too. Again, an amp will DEFINITELY improve it but you can get these headphones now and wait til you can/want to get a dedicated amp.

And yes, they do sound really good out of the box! My other headphones for comparison are the logitech g pro x (gaming), Sony XM4 and Galaxy buds2 pro. These sound waaaay better than any of them!

I found this too. So many reviews and forums saying they REQUIRE amplification but i really haven't found that in my experience. In fact I had a topping e30 and l30 dac/amp setup and I sold the amp because I really couldn't hear the benefit compared to my half the price tempotec dongle!

Personally they didn't sound great straight from my pc though. I'm not sure why, but I trust my ears on that one. Same with my speakers. Straight through the PC just doesn't hold a candle to through my e30.

      • it will depend on your mobo audio specs… Mine seems ok. I'm sure it can better. From the reviews I read, I thought I was gonna miss the bass and even considered modding it but to be honest, so far so good.

It's early days and I still have an amp/dac on the way which now feels like overkill as you said but who knows? I'll try that for a while too and if it improves it further, bonus!

  • I wonder how these would go with a digital piano, any audiophiles shed some light?

    • That's exactly what I bought them for but I don't have the piano yet haha really keen to hear about it as well but from what I read online when doing my research they should work really well

    • +2

It depends on the digital piano if the amp is good it will sound amazing

  • Kind of tempting, but I think i'll just stick with using the Clears as my everyday/thing.

    • I currently have the clears but unfortunately due to their price am apprehensive of using them 24/7.

is there a huge difference between the two ?

was hoping to find something that gives 90% of the performance of the clears. hoping these will fit this category

I had my hd6xx for a couple of years and was using it with my ifi zen dac. Today I received a used Burson Conductor DAC/Amp, and I cannot believe the 6xx has turned into a much better and more resolving headphone!

    • Yeah, signal chain really does matter, for sure

    • +1

That's one of the best things about these headphones, they scale really well with different gear. There will always be a place for them in my collection, even if I end up using high end gear one day, I know these will still sound great with it.

    • +1

at the price of that burson I would hope so :)

  • price has gone up on these?

    • disregard, seems price has come back down.

at the time of this comment the price was 199USD

  • @OP or anyone reading this.

can you please confirm its indeed $179 USD as its coming up as $189 USD for me

    ( $179 original price + $20 shipping - $10 first time sign up code = $189 )

    OP has stated its $169 + 20 - 10 = $179

    • +1

Just checked, $179 here. Maybe try opening on an incognito tab

  • These sound much, much better with a proper signal chain (amp/dac). Very comfy too, and great price!
