Did I Make Mistake buying a Sony XR65X90K Television?

Hello my dears, I bought refurb from Sony eBay a Sony XR65X90k total $1172 delivered.

I have heard it's better for free TV than any other brand, and TCL c845 is $1400. Hisense U7K 75" is also only $1245 (75" $1324) but scores higher on RTING!

Did I make mistake?

Please reassure me UwU

    Wtf

    • 2nd hand 65" TV for $1172 ?????
      yes, Wtf

  • +5

    Maybe.

Size matters… That extra 10 inches could go a long way towards your satisfaction.

    • -2

please understand… there is only 2 meter between viewer and television unit.. according to RTING i am only to 65" television.. that even so is pushing the boundary
that is why 65" is the unit purchased

      • Only 2m from TV….

Even 50" Tv would have sufficed and only around $500 new these days

    • +4

When those 10 inches are not wielded with care they can result in OP’s username

      • Maybe a plasma screen would be the safer option?

  • +2

I'm relaxing here 2M away from my 75" TCL monitor/ movie player/youtube player/ browser/netflix player…. and the only boundary I'm pushing is that I can't practically fit an 85" TCL in the space…. otherwise there'd be one there.

You paid $230 less for a used sony…. I'd take the 20" bigger new TCL with a 3 year guarantee every day of the year.

    sorry dear
    ahem

  • +5

In the end you have a Sony, everytime someone comes to your house no one will judge you or ask you questions but with any other 3rd rate brand they will always ask "hows the quality" and you're forced to repeat the same old excuse followed by blank stares.

    It's a Sony…..end of story.

    • +2

And if they do ask about it, you can proudly say it's a Sony, it has a 1 year warranty….. Not like those cheap TCLs with their 3 year warranty!

(assuming they gave the same warranty as a new one…. being "refurbished" might mean a shorter period perhaps….

      • +1

And on rereading… I have to say…. if you're worried about how other people judge you depending on your brand of tv… you must be devastated at the thought of having the OP's ailment!!

    • As a Sony fan, I like this reply.

Sony electronics behind the panels, remote controls, UI are solid. These things come with a cost.

Hard to say if refurb vs size vs cost balances out. Return if it really bugs you, otherwise don't overthink and enjoy your purchase.

    • 100%. Nothing beats that 2 star feeling than walking into a Hotel room or restaurant and seeing TCS or Hisense on the wall. In terms of reputation they have a heck of a mountain to climb.

      • You've owned tcl tvs? I've bought about 8 TCLs for different folks/ different purposes since 2014, and have never regretted it.

I've bought 2 samsungs… and after the second it was never again.

What is their reputation that you think demonstrates the problem?

But everyone is entitled to their views…. I mean, if you felt the need to poll ozbargainers on whether they spent more on their phones, or pcs, or tvs…. perhaps conforming to some sort of status by expense rather than utility is important to you.

        • Happy to answer the question but I'm not sure what it is.

If you're asking why I think they have a reputation problem, it is because in most shootouts the only thing they will ever win is 'best budget TV', 'best value for money' and so on.They are not there to outgun the top three on PQ, there is no news there.

It is hard to comment on preferring TCL to Samsung. Did it have dead pixels? Did you not like the image? Hated the OS? Needed to save money?

'Status by expense' - I don't get that. The best TV you can get right now appears to be a shootout between the 90C and 95L and they cost a fortune. If you can't tell the difference between these models and a QM8 then your wallet thanks you.

          • @bjd533: The question is about your statement: "TCS or Hisense on the wall. In terms of reputation they have a heck of a mountain to climb"

In my eyes they are well placed on the reputation mountain, and I've purchased/ owned 8. You perhaps haven't owned any.

I preferred TCL to samsung….because the TCLs continued to work. The samsungs failed- that is, no picture at all… Nothing about dead pixels or OS.

Needed to save money? I assess the value of items I buy in terms of performing the function, and the expense. That way I can afford a far broader range of items than otherwise. Hence I have a large shed full of a comprehensive range of tools, big arsed tvs, cars, motorhomes, tractors, a trailer, a bus, 4 motorbikes, a holiday home….etc etc.

I'd much prefer this than being able to impress casual acquaintances with tales of say…. my incredibly expensive world trip, or private plane… while sitting on my arse in a bare room surrounded by nothing.

My wallet always thanks me for the ability to buy items that perform a function to my satisfaction, without wanting the top item of today which will rapidly become yesterday's hero….

My wallet understands that it should operate in the manner which best enhances my pleasures and abilities, NOT being driven by how others may judge my value by the perceived status of the brand of any of my items.

If you being able to afford today's bestest most expensive tv on the market, and that status is important to you… well done! But I would question if you would be more at home in a vogue forum, than an ozbargain forum.

TLDR: the OP was asking about bang for buck between a fancier tv, or an adequate bigger tv. The question wasn't purely picture quality.

            • @rooster7777: Sounds like you're on a great wicket.

OP is comparing TCL and Hisense to Sony.

Cheap hotels use TCL and Hisense and more expensive ones tend to go elsewhere.

There is a ton of theory about the challenges of repositioning your product as a premium offering, it can be a tall mountain to climb, that is the point I am making. If you dispute that and think it's easy or think that customers are stupid for buying anything else then that's fine.

                @bjd533: I have to fess up…..
My brain auto identified the TCL c845 as a 75"
I now realise OP and you were talking about the 65". That discounts most of what I was talking about….
In my mind I was incorrectly comparing a 65" better picture to a 75" bigger picture…. so in this context much of what I wrote was bollocks.
I agree with your thoughts about repositioning as a premium offering against similar sized competition.
                cheers

@rooster7777: I thought we were in a flaming cul de sac(!)

Your earlier comments have made me notice that TCL are definitely edging up in places like RTINGS and one of my fave reviewers is recommending Hisense more often. I'll keep a closer eye on them.

                  • +1

@bjd533: I wonder if being up shit creek with no paddle, and in a flaming cul de sac are natural antidotes to each other….
(sort of like the major part of the medical solution to methanol poisoning is administering…. ethanol!)

I'm still stuck on the OP's username, before working out if their buyers remorse is justified…
The " UwU" at the end though automatically means any 'recommendation' is likely invalidated by my subconscious refusing to help

I had to google it, thought it was an odd acronym

  • ohh well your loss

    • Yep, a swollen vulva is a common symptom of vaginitis, or an inflammation of the vagina. This often happens because of a bacterial, yeast, or viral infection or an imbalance in vaginal bacteria. I think the OP has more important things to worry about than her TV.

  • +2

    Buyer's remorse before taking delivery.

OP will fit in quite well here.

Don't worry, you bought the best TV in the world. I read in Choice that it's a lucky TV, it'll make you more attractive and you'll probably win the lottery soon.

  • username checks out!

    Please reassure me UwU

use of this term on OZB should be considered an instant ban IMO. Gross.

    Also, that username.

  • You can get a great 2nd hand 65” OLED for that price, so not a great purchase.

But if it’s fully functional then the 2nd handedness doesn’t really matter, and if you like watching sport then you’ve done well to avoid the TCL and Hisense.

    • Do you also subscribe to the view that if you didn't buy a telstra or bentley you made a mistake?
If you don't fly first or business class you are making a mistake?
I mean… it's not like vhs vs beta, or LED vs plasma… you are talking about the difference between:
for a given size, oled more expensive
for a given size, oled uses more power
      oled not as bright
      vs..
      oled better blacks
      oled better viewing angles

For me, picture size is of major importance- thus favouring LED.. I'd rather have a big LED tv, a useful car, money to spend on other things to round out a life…….than sitting on the floor in a bare room watching a lovely big oled tv.
If your budget/ your parent's budget is not limited, fair enough.
