Does Anyone Know if Exetel Does a Hard Credit Check for New Broadband Connection?

Does anyone know if Exetel does a hard credit check for new broadband connection? I want to signup the broadband and they are usually prepaid so I expect it to not affect my credit rating. Am I right here?

    What did they say?

    • Exetel did mention that they will do credit check and it will show on my profile. But the guy was not confident about this.

  • I signed up for Exetel in July and TPG 5G Home Broadband in Feb.

TPG isn't showing on Experian, Equifax or Illion.
Exetel is showing on Illion, but not Experian. I've run a Equifax too recently to run another (and I forgot to save it down as PDF), so can't confirm if Exetel check Equifax.

  • I don't get it why a credit check from a utility or internet provider impact on the credit rating. The credit rating should be impacted only if there are multiple credit checks for credit or there are unpaid bills. All lenders when they will review a credit application will comb through the credit inquiries and they will ask if they have any issues. They should not be automatically denying merely based on the number of inquiries.
In my experience, whenever re-financing my mortgages I have never had to explain any utility provider credit checks.

    • I have been told by my mortgage broker that you should not have multiple enquiries on your profile as it may impact when applying for a new loan or re-mortgaging the existing one. I previously took Tangerine broadband connection and they never did a credit check. Exetel did mention that they will do credit check and it will show on my profile.

There is not a lender in Australia that is going to give a shit about a telecommunications hit once every 6 months or so.

However, they can only do a credit check if they are giving you credit. Normally this is a contract that includes a device that is paid off over time. In some cases they consider it credit if you pay in arrears. In my experience most of the time you pay the month upfront these days.

The type of credit is relevant. Payday loan every 2 months then GTFOOT. A new internet account every 6 months seems pretty reasonable, people need the internet. If you are refinancing, the repayment history on your current mortage is going to be the most important thing.

  • Probably a soft credit check which will not show on your file v a hard credit check which does

  • when you sign up for postpaid sim only plans you go through a credit check too, i assume this is the same thing.

    • Usually they don't for prepaid plans.

  • They did for me, appeared on my Illion report
