Selling Stuff on Facebook Marketplace

Some of you might remember the good-old-days with Trading Post and Gumtree. It seems Facebook Marketplace has taken over, not just in Oz, but USA too, and maybe other countries. Nowadays we sell as much as we buy, sometimes for Freebies. And we have largely used Marketplace seeing that it's the flavour for the year. Have been good for a couple of years I reckon.

However, lately it has become very frustrating: Trying to buy something and used the search function, couldn't get a good result. So searched by Category and found the item. Next is we were trying to sell some age care/disability items such as "Wheelie Walker". Some items went thru alright, just that we didn't get a single enquiry. That makes me wonder about their Search Function as mentioned above.

However, our biggest gripe is when FB deems that we have violated their rules about "healthcare" products. Our Ads about Wheelie Walker and other stuff have been declined, and we were puzzled as we saw the exact same items being advertised by others. So we appealed, got declined, appealed again, got declined again. So I contacted one of the sellers, and he was very kind to tell me that his Ad got approved, whilst his sister's was declined.

Any sharing from this resourceful community would be much appreciated.

    • or, FB just seems to know where I've been for a pick-up,
because they recommend me similar items or other items,
in the same suburb that I just visited a day ago.

I think it's studying my movements,
and uses this to toy with me,
      to generate regret or FOMO,
so that I stay engaged with FB.

One I had the other day

"What's the price if I pay cash"

I replied 'Same price as advertised' and informed them that since Facebook Marketplace transactions generally don't incur GST and since you're likely to pay with Cash or via PayID anyways so paying with cash on Facebook Marketplace isn't a price negotiation tactic, they replied 'I didn't ask for your opinion' and lets just say I ran through them like a freight train after that ;)

Really gotta think how they think insulting the sellers intelligence is gonna help their case in any multiverse.

    • paying with cash on Facebook Marketplace isn't a price negotiation tactic

      Haha….that's a good zinger!

The thing is, I reckon FB is collecting sales data
(just like eBay or Gumtree does),
and will eventually submit them to the ATO.

    • Sorry, no cash. I only accept old rolled up newspapers.

But according to facebook it is fine to advertise Solar energy scams and similar from the number of scammy ads I see every day.

I had a mission selling empty beer bottles on marketplace when I gave up home brewing, well listing them anyway. Kept getting shut down for "selling alcohol", appeals kept getting rejected.

I did end up selling them on there eventually though

    • How did that happen? Was your Ad get posted ?

      • Was a while back, I think in the end I posted a photo of one bottle and left the description pretty much empty so as not to trigger anything.

          RARE GREEN BOTTLE

          ONLY ONE IN BRISBANE

  • Facebook quality control is trash. Also the appeals and reporting is utterly arbitrary and also trash. Can't even be bothered reporting scammers, fake links, p0rn etc. Goes nowhere. Don't be surprised in dealing with anything on Facebook.

  • Reading all your sharing above, whilst my problem has no solution (yet), I think Gina Rinehart can step-up her "urge" to Zuckerberg to crack down Facebook, not just scams.

    • Not even the US congress can 'crack down' on the Zuck. Interesting that Gina feels he'll listen to her self-interested missive tho.

I sold my car on Gumtree, it's possible, you just have to ignore the rubbish lowballers/scumbags, and not give them the time of day.

    • That's good on you.
But I have the impression that not many people use Gumtree nowadays.
This includes myself, our circle of family and friends….

I might revisit poor old Gumtree…

Sold my last 2 items on Gumtree, hassle free
No response or offers on Marketplace except Pay Id scammers

    • I always hear of but dont understand the payID scam

      • +2

A common one is that the buyer offers to pay by PayID, then because PayID is generally linked to an email address or phone number, they send an email/text to that address/number claiming to be from "PayID" (PayID is not an organisation, and doesn't send you emails) and telling you you need to 'upgrade to a business account' to receive the payment. Then you click a link and go and enter your credit card details on a dodgy website.

No PayID ever actually involved, it's purely a social engineering scam, and very easy to avoid if you just wait to see the money in your account before you hand over the item!

      • By asking about PayID,
you will need to give an identifiable information about you,
        eg. EMail or Phone Number.

Then, another prospective buyer, another time/day,
can ask you for your location because they want to come and pick up with ca$h.

So, if both buyers work together,
they already know your contact details, address,…probably your name, etc.

        • It's nothing that complex, the payid scams are really the lowest level scam targeting people with very low technical literacy

I generally post to both Facebook and Gumtree if I want it to go quickly. Seems like there are definitely different markets depending on which one you post on. I would say there are more scams at the lower values on Facebook but more for higher value items on Gumtree.

Facebook definitely has something going on with their search though. I was talking to someone about an item I wanted to buy. She updated the details and the ad disappeared. I knew the exact name of the item but couldn't find it by searching. Ended up finding it through searching through the relevant category.

They also seem to use some sort of Facebook-style algorithm to promote popular items. I sometimes sell houseplants of which I will have dozens of. The ad gets left up for long periods of time until they are all sold. Sometimes I will get 5-10 genuine enquiries per day. Then it will go weeks with nothing. Then one message will come through and I end up with multiple on the same day again.

    • Yep same!

    • Then one message will come through and I end up with multiple on the same day again.

FB gauges the 'popularity' of your item,
      from the demand it receives.

If it thinks 1 person messaging you is a good sign,
then, it uses that sign, to rank up the listing,
on another person's feed,…upon which if that person hovered over that listing,
or messages you, then it starts ranking the listing on other people's feeds, etc. etc.

  • I used to sell my used PlayStation games on gumtree & FB but it’s such a pain I’ve given up.
So now I have a massive pile of games I’ve played but don’t know what to do with.

FFS just use eBay to sell, sure they take a percentage but the only issues I’ve faced selling is a couple of bidders who asked to cancel after they’d won

  • Facebook marketplace search is trash. They need to have a button to click for "search exact term" rather than "search for all unrelated items".

    • The radius on the map-search is hopeless.

My Wife put a Coffee table on FB Market place the other day and almost immediately got a couple of "is this still available" and when she replied yes the guy said please provide PayID details etc as his Son would be picking it up. I was suspicious so looked at his profile and was clearly overseas and all his post in a language I didn't recognise. Anyway he went quiet when I questioned him and said I wanted COD. Then I discovered this https://www.sbs.com.au/language/assyrian/en/podcast-episode/…

    • This is the basic payid scam, there's 100s of discussions about that on this website and others.

  • Why not list on both?

Sold a car on FB a few Sundays ago. Put the ad up at 1pm - and the car was being driven out of my driveway before 3pm. I bit under my asking price but I was happy with their offer.

  • What's recently grinding my gears is the volumne of accounts posting eBay products at 2x-3x the price. E.g. if you search 'projector' you'll find many listed for $150 that are brand new. Do the same search for projecters on ebay and you'll find find the same images used for a $50 product.
