Castrol Edge 5W-30 Engine Oil A3/B4
Castrol EDGE 5W-30 engine oil A3/B4 with Fluid TITANIUM is the natural choice for drivers who demand maximum engine performance from today's modern vehicles requiring a high level of protection and higher performance oils. Today's engines continually push the boundaries of technology and engineering, they are smaller and ultra-efficient, without sacrificing performance. Advanced engines challenge the oil with increased pressures. These intense pressures cause friction, which can waste up to 10% of an engine's performance. Castrol EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4 is an advanced full synthetic engine oil suitable for use in automotive petrol and diesel vehicles, where the manufacturer recommends an ACEA A3/B4, API SL/CF or earlier specification 5W-30 engine oil.

  • Good timing, out of stock , Thanks OP

Decent price if you need oil for an oil change, but not for stockpiling.

I suspect prices might come down (after a time lag) with renewed strength in the AUD and lower crude oil prices.

  • Is it better to use Castrol Edge 10W-30 A5/B5 in a Honda Civic 2010 since Australian winters never go below zero?

    • @ar7ist

Umm plenty of places below zero in Australia.

      Its not all Beaches/Desert.

Tassie/SnowyMountains even Qld regularly gets below zero.

      • Not common to get sub-zero temps but Aussie deserts regularly get minimum temps a few degrees above freezing in winter.

      • I'm in Metro Melbourne.

Manual says A1/B1, A3/B3 or A5/B5 but the one in this deal is A3/B4 so I'm guessing its not the right one anyways?

So I got this one, price beat at SCA

        • Don't get too hung up on specifics. Vehciles managed to surivive for decades on far inferior oils last century.

The vast majority of quality synthetic engine oils will do the job for the vast majority of vehicles. The fact that Honda has specified such a broad range also suggests it's not critical. There's little if any evidence that it is over all, although some car makers claim reduced fuel efficiency if different specced oils are used.

Viscosity is more important, depending on typical local temperatures and your specific driving conditions. More viscous oil (higher numbers) on cold startup is less efficient as far as protection goes, esp if your trips are typically short (eg short work commutes). Whether it's critical if you stay in the ballpark range is highly debatable.

In general, stick with the vehicle manufacturer specs but moving from say a 5W20 to a 5W30 is going to make negligible difference. All multigrades are a compromise. The bigger the range the more compromise.

There are plenty of websites which explain different oil specs and the effects of viscosity. Here's one: on specs from Valvoline .

    • It's recommended full synthetic 0W20

      • Google says 5W20
Depends on where ar7ist lives (esp winter temps) and what his regular trips involve (short/long runs, city/country etc) but for most of Oz I wouldn't be using 10W30 during winter.

    • It literally snows in southern Queensland, a state for known for its' tropical climate, not to mention the Snowy Mountains in NSW, or Victorian Alps where there are ski resorts.

The manual says 5W-20, for the 1.8l.

So this oil would be perfect. We've been using 5W-30 Nulon long life in ours and it still runs beautifully.

  • thanks OP, got one

Flapping dummies at Repco, "this does not fit your vehicle", enter vehicle, first oil result is Repco brand 5W30 Full Synth 5L for lots more than $42.

    • The car maker handbook or the oil maker catalogue is far more reliable than many accessory websites, and not just for oil. Oil and air filters can be a nightmare

      • Yeah the manual says I can use 0W20 but also 5W30 and 5W40.

They use 0W20 for good fuel economy and starting in cold weather.

I'm in Melbourne and rarely leave the car outside in actual cold weather.

  • is it okay for golf tdi 2.0?

  • Does anyone find this oil burn faster than other full synths?

  • Price back to $87 now.
