Great deal on this just-retired set. It's been going in and out of stock online for VIC but still definitely available in NSW. Last chance to grab an icon!

    Webdite down! XD

    • Yes, looks like out of stock in VIC again now - NSW back up again though!

  • Thanks, ordered 2 online for delivery

    • I was looking for Express Delivery option - didn't find it - not sure if it's going to come or not.

      Does it ship through AusPost?

  • +1

I managed to pick one up off the shelf at mt ommaney qld yesterday. There was no clearance label but it scanned at $99 on the price check.

    SPACESHIP!

    • +2

Gee, I wish it was Spaceship, Spaceship, Spaceship!
I missed that set, but it's a much better one than this - contained a lot of coveted elements and was more alike with the Classic Space range than this re-imagining.
I do have this but was very disappointed - it's like 66% wing parts. Second model might hopefully help me come up with a MOC.

  • +1

No dramas ordering it from the website for delivery.

    OOS

    • +1

      Not for me

  • +4

I wish they sold the old kit with the old pieces :(.

They've used the decals and colouring to give it a retro vibe, but the kit is still using new shaped blocks…. not the same.

    • +1

It's also way over-engineered unlike the original Classic Space which was virtually, build - pick up n play - rebuild. The instruction manual was only a couple of pages because it was so intuitive.
I never realised (because we didn't keep the boxes back then) but there were alternate builds of the original spaceship - play was much more fun and imagination.
You can't do that with this model - it's even hard to display as it's too large for the ubiquitous Ikea/Aldi cases (which I've just discovered they don't sell anymore!), haha.

      • It's also way over-engineered unlike the original

I just noticed that this new set has 1254 pieces, my original one is only 325. That's a lot of extra pieces…

        • +2

New one is much bigger. Old one had one plate thickness of the grey wedge plates; new one is a 3D version of this. New one more detailed - e.g. brick built white arrow.

        • +4

Yes, it's true that it is much bigger and, as ihbh says, it has some nice details and no shorrt cuts (there's also a retractable ramp and retractable undercarriage). The quality is there and the quantity. But of those 1,254 pcs, it seems more than half are used in the wing construction.
It's not Classic Space, it's a homage to Classic Space.

It doesn't come with a lunar plate or moonbase buiding as the 928 (original Galaxy Explorer) did: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/gAIAAOSwmURkGkp~/s-l1600.jpg

Btw, here is the reverse of the original box that shows how easy it was to byuuild alternate builds with the original range (no instructions ever given):

      • ubiquitous Ikea/Aldi cases

What cases are you referring to?

    • I wish they sold the old kit with the old pieces :(.

Yeah I can't understand why they don't do this, maybe protecting the collector market? I've got about 30 sets from the original classic space series, and most of the blocks are not that special. And considering the Lego factory is 99% automated, can 't they just dial in the recipe from 1979 and replicate it exactly?

      • +1

The picking and packing etc is all automated, but the pieces are still injected molded- and the molds cost a fortune to make, especially if the originals are worn out / lost.

        • -2

and the molds cost a fortune to make

This can also be automated. Cast or CNC milling molds is a lot cheaper than you might think, I know a guy that does this in his garage so surely a company the size of Lego would have digitised CADs of all their IP be able to make whatever they wanted on demand.

          • -2

@1st-Amendment: It absolutely is not cheap to create a bunch of extremely precise molds good enough to churn out millions of casts. There's a reason smaller companies 3D print plastics even though the results are far worse.

            • @Merlict:

It absolutely is not cheap to create a bunch of extremely precise molds good enough to churn out millions of casts

You know how CAD works right? Creating a new design with tight tolerances from scratch can be expensive, and buying a top of the range CNC mill with micron level accuracy can be expensive, but once you own those, which Lego does, it's as simple as feeding the CAD into the machine and voila! You have a new mold.

The fact that Lego creates custom pieces using this exact process for almost every new set they release should tell you that this exercise is relatively trivial for them.

    • +6

I have the complete old one - it's a beauty; it was a surprise in a bulk lot with houses and castles purchased for $25! This is the cheapest way to acquire it.

      • Lucky!

      • Love a good bulk buy! I got about 70% of a Skull's Eye Schooner in a $100 bulk buy, along with a Lagoon Lockup. Winner!

    • Lego likes making money, not risking money on inefficient machine parts and block styles that they can't patent anymore because they are so old.

    • I prefer blacktron, mtron and space police..

  • Thanks OP! Managed to order one for delivery.

  • worked for me

  • It would be an icon if they hadn't pimped it. This is not my SPACESHIP!

I'd rather get the Mars Rover. I already have the International Space Station which is awesome.

  • Literally got a refund for this today…

    • +1

They love to play the rfund game lately.

    • How long ago did you order?

  • +1

Thanks OP grabbed one on delivery, lets hope it gets through the process as I have had my past two Kmart orders refunded due to stock issues.

  • +1

    Cheers. Hopefully order is delivered.

  • +1

Many thanks OP. There was one new one on Marketplace a few days ago for $100 in Liverpool - too far, but if it was closer I would have jumped at it.

Fingers crossed. This will look great side by side with my LL928.

    • Hoping it comes through for you!

Yeahhhhh cancellations, wooooo, yeahhhhhhhhhh love Kmart

  • mmm available in NSW, but OOO for South Australia? :(

    • Seems to be phasing in and out of stock around the country. It’s a pretty amazing price just before Christmas. Wonder who’ll actually receive theirs?

      • you are right! just checked and had stock in SA. Ordered one.

  • +1

Got one for my 8 year old boy.
Then I saw it is for 18+!! If not cancelled have to wait another 10 years

    • Nice username. Mine is backwards.

  • 2 were left on the shelf at Doncaster Kmart VIC

    • Nice! None at Clayton M-City when I dropped by today

  • OOS

  • I just got one - said there was only one left

    • One left since 6am this morning no matter how many people placed order after, it is still showing 1 left, that’s Kmart.

      • Ha, shit! So this will probably get cancelled?

  • -2

Look at that idiotic spoiler on the back. And those 2 rocket/engines looking monstrosities on the wings. What a complete fail from Lego … whereas the original from 1980 is probably my favourite set of all time.

  • +1

Just got the “order cancelled” email. Ordered within minutes of getting the OzB notification email for a”Lego” deal.

Tried for 2 FWIW. Not enough for even one.

  • We're sorry, all item(s) are unavailable
refund approved as always with kmart

  • Just got mine cancelled as well

  • Cancelled here too.

  • lol dang it. Got cancelled too.

  • Cancelled. Kind of expecting that from the commentary before hand. Just confirms Kmart being the most useless of the big box stores.

  • Just got a cancelation

  • +1

Not cancelled yet but suspecting only a matter of time…. just for curiousity, those who have had their orders cancelled, just wondering if you are all in the same area/state?

  • Cancelled, (Sydney metro area). :(

  • Cancelled :(

  • Cancelled here too, sydney area

  • Cancelled.

  • +1

Don't need it, ordered, then cancelled. Pheew, saved by (useless) Kmart.

  • Cancelled here too.

  • +1

    Got mine cancelled too.
I wanted this set for sentimental reasons. The 1979 version was my first Lego set which my late father got for me.
Wanted this set as a way to remember him.

  • +1

    Found these in store.

Manor lakes in vic had 3- bought one.

  • Order cancelled out of stock.

I have original and wanted to put side by side!

  • Cancelled

  • Order cancelled :(

  • +1

And there it finally is….. cancellation and refund confirmation emails just received Saturday lunchtime.

Thanks Kmart. I fully appreciate how hard it must be for a small little operation like yours to operate an online storefront that is integrated with an up to date stock system.

    • Even worse in-store.
Go to the service desk, their little device says they have 12 in stock. They tell me 'nah that's not right these stock levels sometimes take 2 weeks to update, I couldnt find anything at the back'.
Literally the next day they had the items out. Bought them.
They just too lazy to even do their job. Especially the older women, one at the service desk told me recently 'nah I dont want to go out back to check'.

      • Haha I don't know why every single store I go to gives the same excuses. It's almost like it is part of their training program.

"Hey the website says you have it in stock"

"Let me check, hmmm yeah it says 50 in stock, wow, let me see"

"Nope, I guess it must be stolen"

        "50 of them?"

        "yeah… it's popular!"

1 week later, 50 of them appear on the shelf, was probably unstolen.

  • +1

Order cancelled but can still order to the same address and now the limit has been increased from 1 to 3. lol useless kmart

  • +1

Order cancelled and they are still selling them!

  • El cancellio maximo

  • Got cancellation notice too, why do they not take it down!!

  • I bought one then 30 minutes later bought another one with a different email. Second one was shipped later that day, the first one was cancelled the next day.

    Total lottery.

    • I’ve got one cancelled, the other up in the air. I’ve made my peace with this Russian Roulette - this whole thread’s been a rollercoaster!

    • You've inspired me to try again. It's like gambling at this rate.

      • Cancelled again

    • haha, you've inspired me to give it a 4th shot

  • Thought I got lucky in WA, ordered 1x about 4hrs after deal posted. Got cancelled this morning. Bah!

  • Cancelled… damn.

  • Same. Cancelled :-/

  • +1

Why hasn't Kmart set it to out of stock yet after all the cancelations.
Edit: stuff it, gonna order again and see what happens.

    • got cancelled again.

  • They just cancelled my order. Five days, after it was placed. Pathetic excuse for a company.

  • +1

What really annoying is it's still available to order!!!!!

  • Another day another cancel. Ima just reorder everyday until it goes out of stock.

  • +1

    Three attempts cancelled so far

  • Didn’t realise everyone was getting cancelled. If I had known I wouldn’t have even bothered.

  • Keep spam ordering it guys. Got lucky on my 3rd attempt after 2 cancellations, just received the shipping confirmation. I'm in Perth but don't think it makes a difference.

    • Ordered 5 times with 5 refunds so close to giving up honestly.

      • +2

        Mama didn't raise a quitter

  • Managed to get one but came wrapped in plastic only so box was torn pretty badly. Terrible!

    • Yeah mine came wrapped in plastic with box damage

    • Was not impressed when Target shipped an expensive set in a literal black rubbish bag only!

  • +1

I ordered one on the 24th of November, it was before it was at $99.

It had no movement, until today it was cancelled. I contacted live chat and said this is stupid, like pull the damn item offline, then she said yeah they are really busy and its hard to manage stock levels, sounds like utter incompetence to me.
