  Maybe stupid question… but these 7.x systems, can they be used as 5.x without confusing the system that you don’t have 7 speakers connected?

    Yes correct. In the setup process you tell it how many speakers you have via the Speaker Layout function. So you could have 5x speakers with two amps spare.

  Anyone have a recommendation for a basic AVR that can also do composite video to HDMI output with 1080p upscaling? Newer makes don't have the composite video inputs I want for older game consoles, and would love it if I didn't have to have a bunch of external converters to have an N64 / PS2 etc hooked up the my AVR. Probably going to fish around for used ones.

      I suggest you go down to your local Hifi store and listen to a few speakers. The store can recommend a package depending on your needs and budget.
