VW 2013 Mechatronic Replacement Cost

So my son's Volkswagen Golf 2013 auto model was purchased for $10,000 it's actually in pretty good condition drives really well and we've had no issues with it until now.

We have just put it into Volkswagen because there was an error code on the dash saying gearbox workshop. The quote that we have had is for $4,389 and that is for the replacement of the Mechatronic for no Drive as the mechatronic is currently leaking.

So is this OK?

Sorry that i cant help you with the estimated cost

But from someone who was burnt bad by an audi, welcome to secondhand euro ownership :)

Me too! $28k for a transmission on an A6

      • +2

Did you ask them if they'd like to take your left kidney while they're at it?

        • +1

I told them to shove it and traded it in on a car with a 7 year warranty 😂

          • @lachhelix: Not sure how we would trade in a car with a fault that comes up on the dash every time you start it

            • @Socialsuicide01: Black tape over the dash light.

            • @Socialsuicide01: I wouldn't suggest you trade a car with a CEL lol.
You'll get the repair for much less than you're getting quoted, pay the repair bill and you've got yourself a car with a fixed DSG, you'll be fine

  • Try a non VW workshop..

They seem to have box issues

    few recalls too

        Very apt for owning a V(irtually) W(orthless)
        Break
        Out
        Another

Can your son just keep driving it and get the mechanic to do a "check up" every 2,000 klms?

    • Is that you kajke?

  • +1

Yeah defs take it to a VW specialist, golf is a common car and likely a common issue with the DSG - an independent specialist is going to be considerably cheaper. Get a written quote from VW
Try Genesis Autoworks and ask them what they'd charge

    • Wow they have some very good reviews I'll call them in the morning and see how it goes

    • So I rang Genesis Auto Works very friendly people and they said that the price was reasonable there may be a couple of hundred dollars in it otherwise seems okay.

lol, "it's actually really good apart from the broken bit that costs half as much as the car to replace".

Bandaid it and kick it to the kerb.

    • That is exactly right, so that is why I'm asking people how much is for the fix. The poor kid is in apprentice Baker and obviously earns just about as much as you think he would.

      • Apprentice wages AND getting up at 2am. RIP.

        • Up earlier now to ride pushy to work…

For a friend of mine cost over $4k for a Tiguan with same issue. Repaired at a VW stealership.

  • +1

Known issue, try to get VW to cover by goodwill.

If that fails, the mechatronic units can be purchased far far cheaper than that, and anyone with some sort of euro experience can fit it.

  • +1

Sadly that $4k price sounds about right for a dealership cost

What's that saying? Something to the effect of "if you can't afford a new euro then you can't afford the maintenance costs of a used one"

      @mapax

      ADAECHS?

      • +1

I’ve given that temporary approval and submitted it to the board.

        • +1

I'm shouting lunch for the next board meeting to make sure it gets through.

  • seems fair price

  • Assuming it's a 7 speed DQ200 out of a golf tsi? Or 6 speed DQ250 out of tdi/gti?

    • Tsi

      • It will have a DQ200 then, have a google there are places that specialise in these transmissions and do reco/swap over mechatronics

I can't comment on the cost of repaired but i'd expect around $1500-$2500 to be a better price that would be achievable depending on whether it's cracked the valve body or its an electrical issue inside the mechatronic

  • I'm surprised its only $4K.

I was quoted more than the value of my Renault to replace a supposedly leaking power steering rack. Sorry, the factory says they can't be repaired. Sorry, there's none in stock in Australia, we'll have to fly one in from France. Sorry, we're a factory dealer, we can only fit new replacement parts sourced from Renault, we can't fit a second hand part.

(Took it to an independent reputable mechanic because he would be able to put a 2nd hand unit in. He said it just needed the fluid replaced.)

Pay the mechanic $300 bucks to make the error code go away and stay away. Trade it in at a dealer that same afternoon.

    • Or the ol electrical tape/sharpie over the check engine light.

      • -1

Yeah they have these things called computers that plug into the ODBII and scan for codes, dash lights don't matter anymore.

    • Save the $300 and trade it in as is. It's unlikely they'll check.

      • It's likely to enter limp mode any moment (if it hasn't already). They might spot that.

      • +2

OP should get their mechanic to sell it on their behalf with a reduced service interval of 2,000 klms

  • who would know as you haven't stated which particular "auto" gearbox it is. There's at least 2 to choose from.

  • I'm on my 3rd VW product and don't understand why:
    1) people don't research before buying which drivelines are marginally reliable and which are absolute turds
    2) why they take cars that are 7 years out of warranty to a dealership when there are so many good independent specialists out there.
