    Is this the 2019 model?

    • Technical details note that it is.

    • is there a newer one?

      • Doesn't seem to be a newer one yet…

      • +1

        Nah, I have this one.

It works better than any others I've tried.

      • +5

You may as well wait a little longer. The newer one should be out next year which will be much more powerful with the new chip. I still have the 2017 model and dont see too much point in this current one.

        • People can't take sarcasm nowadays. I was responding to "2019" comment Oh well.

I am happy with my old one, doesn't want to die and it's still enough powerful for anything I throw at it.

          • +4

@ace310: Yup I just bought a second one on Black Friday. This is the TV Box you get if you want to set and forget. Prefer it over my Apple TV, nice you can side load Kodi and Streamio.

            • @kumquat: I gave in to temptation and purchased one late last week (everyone here knows my distaste for the 2017 model that I got in 2018 lol). Attempted to set up the Pro last weekend, failed… had another go on a day off today and it's finally doing what I want it to do (barring a few brightness/colour adjustments).

But $252 is very nice! If you have a sizeable collection of movies (needed SOMETHING to playback my 20+ years of backed up dvds, blurays and recently 4K's), this can do the job. I've had a few hitches (both the old and this current model) but have worked through them to make things more watchable than they were.

            • +1

@kumquat: Kodi is in the Play store, no side-loading needed,

              • @gadgetguy: Any suggestion about good IPTV providers for Kodi? Tried few but usually overseas servers and crap Internet to Australia. Got FTTP but still buffering on few of them.

                • @Mikael: Why would you use Kodi for IPTV?Tivimate is probably the best iptv player out there.

                  • @Pete Gabitas: @Pete Gabitas thanks. Gonna have a look at it. Always used Kodi or IPTV smarters.

                    • @Mikael: Got the app installed. Suggestions for a good IPTV providers?

                      • @Mikael: Did a lot of research and trial and error and the one I ended up with has been gold. Pm me if you want their discord link.

        • Is that confirmed or something? Thought nvidia lost interest in this sort of thing years ago.

        • +2

Next year? What is that ETA based on? I can't find any announcements

          • @clx: No announcement. But the new system plans to use the new chip thats being made for nintendos switch 2 which is out next year. So it'll most likely be announced and released near the end of the year.

        • +1

Which Tegra chip will the new one use? Imma guessing whatever the Switch 2 will be using, to save money.

      • +13

are nvidia even interested in this shit any more?

they're more into AI cards and $1k geforces

        • +1

$1k is cheap lol, where you shopping?

  • +3

These were $218 in March.. I thought they would have come down near that mark again for Black Friday, but no luck

    • +2

Yep, that's when I pulled the trigger, great price!

      • Have you been happy with it mate ?

I’ve heard really good things about them

        • +3

Also bought in march deal. Awesome, just download kodi and tivimate and youve got every tv show, movie and channel you could ever desire.

Scrapped Netflix, Disney, Stan and Amazon, rather that $75 in my pocket thanks

        • +1

I came from a mibox and it is definately an upgrade on that device. Snappy UI and runs my Plex server really well, can't complain.

  • Great bit of kit.

  • Worth the upgrade over the 2017 version or nah? I don't know how much use the ai scaling stuff I'm really going to get

    • -5

From the reviews i have read online 2017 model is still better then this

  • +1

what is a typical use case of this product?

    • +3

It has Ai upscaling. I have the cheap 1080p netflix and use this to upscale to 4k. It does a good job.

And is bullet proof apart from requiring a power cycle every month or two when the remore stops functioning.

      • +8

bullet proof apart from requiring a power cycle every month or two

I wouldn't call that bullet proof

        • +2

I've had one since March and never done a power cycle to sort out the remote.

    • +2

People use them to playback content they host locally. They support basically every codec, excluding AV1, so perfect remuxed UHD’s and Blu-rays if you want DTS or TrueHD audio.

Otherwise, they’re just really good streaming devices.

      • An alternative is the Apple TV 4K with Plex and/or Infuse.

        • +3

Love Kodi, hate Plex. Can you run Kodi on an Apple TV or it requires jailbreak?

          • @gadgetguy: No idea, I use Infuse. Though I do use it with Plex as media server, but just for file management, not transcoding.

          • @gadgetguy: If you like Kodi stick with Shield.

        • Sure, but you lose Audio compatibility and need to pay a subscription to Infuse.

          • @bobmonkey17: Well someone else in my family group is paying the subscription, but if they weren't I would.

    • I have a LG TV that was top-of-the-line when I bought it years ago. It still looks amazing but the interface is a little slow and some WebOS apps have dropped support for this generation.

Plugged in an Nvidia Shield and I'm golden.

      • But you can get $40 fire TV to do that as well. I still don't see the point of this in late 2023 when cheaper and smaller alternatives exist.

        • Mainly the video and audio compatibility, especially for lossless audio and remuxes.

        • I’ve heard the fire tv sticks are dogs***

  • Psa: remote buttons wear out over time. I use it alot to navigate yt and nf. I'm on my second remote. They cost $100 so consider that.

    • +1

I just use an older (already suffering stick drift) Xbox controller to navigate the menus. Does the job and the battery drain doesn't matter too much as I have a lot of Eneloops ready to replace the batteries with.

      • Na. I like one handed use.

    • +2

You must be one of the only people who intentionally use the Netflix button.

      • +4

I reckon a light cough near the remote is enough to "press" that damn thing. Terrible design.

        • +2

Give the app Button Remapper a go. I've remapped the Netflix button to open Plex but it can also do much more.

        • Yes I hate the triangular remote style, I just wanna pause the show without picking up the remote, first world problem

      • Using button remapper to torrenting alternatives? Yeah, i use the Netfix button all the time.

    • I’ve used the Shield TV app on my iPhone since my 2017 remote started wearing down. Decent interface and far easier when typing.

    • There's an app you can use to act as a remote.

      • Easy to use app. Also connected to my Google. Having a pixel phone its there in lock screen to pause or whatever.

    • My older 2017 model connects via HDMI to my Samsung TV and can use the TV remote. Have you tried using the TV remote on yours?

  • Would there be any difference in speed, buffering etc. running torrserve on this vs. chromecast vs. TV original OS (Tizen, S90C)? 100/20 NBN.

  • +1

Same price at HN with the 10% gift card bonus.

  • Are these good for Kodi?
Or do I need a complicated raspberry pi box?

    • +3

These are the best for Kodi, there's nothing better.

    • +1

This is great for kodi. A firestick 4K max ($54) does a good job at kodi too

      • +1

        Unless you want DTS-HD passthrough

        • Turn off the Dolby processing and tell it your receiver supports it.

  • +1

Do these have advertising when you start up.

    • +1

The default launcher has ads. You can remove them or get a custom launcher. I use FLauncher.

  • +2

I know this thing is meant to be good but it's a 4 year old model, nVidia are the worst already, just update it. My god.

    • What do you want out of an updated model?

  • Is there newer of this ?

    • +1

The new one will contain 3/4 of the circuitry of the Nintendo Switch 2 - who knows when.

  • Worth upgrading over Xiaomi mi box S? I'm finding it quite laggy just to navigate menus

    • +1

Definitely. I went from Mi Box S to Shield Pro 2019 and love it!

      • +1

        Agree. Much snappier.

  • super haps with my 2017 one especially after i upgraded the remote to the same as the 2019 model's.

not trying to play local content, just to run my paid streaming apps (turkey and argentinian subs ofc, 2017 is gd enough.

  • +1

Still the best Android media player on the market despite its age , Nvidia might be dumping old stock onto the market for a new model not that I’ve heard a word about it.

The 2019 Tegra X1+ which has a few minor flaws still work, has fairly recently Android on it “Android 11), and my theory is that Nvidia are putting all their development into their A1000 and other AI chips, on 3nm process that they haven’t sold enough of these units since they were released in 3019 so they continue to sell the old 2019 model

I had a 2015 model which worked well, however I then bought a 2019 model when it first came out because that it had Dolby Vision.

I won’t say mine is perfect - it’s not - but As far as Android Mefia Players go, don’t run a Plex server on it - find a laptop or USFF i7 and, hand some large drives off it it using.a DECENT USB 3.0 multi port off it.

I have a lot more drives but with 4K Linux ISOs being so large you really want some sort of NAS like trueNAS or unRAID 16/18TB drives whether they be new or manufacture recertified drives

Personally I think a Synology 1921+ is good except is has a slow CPU in it. As do most 8 bay 3.5” drive units. You can always download on a faster machine and then copy over to a Synology or QNAP unit - something like the TVS-h168

The basic model chassis holds 12 x 3.5” drives as well as another 4 x 2.5” drives.

The rings about this NAS is that is has some decent CPU power

I believe the unit is still very expensive but it runs Intel Xeon W -1250 6 core / 12 Thread CPUs up to 4.7GHz and 32 GB ECC DDR 4 DISSM - Etta only one of tte most powerful NAS boxes computered to the build your own solutions.

Another 4 x RAID pool using SSD, but of course you could scale some of theses down if it’s just one Person watching.

Some people take the TrueNAS off the mach pit something like proxmox or something similar on it. .

The hard ware I heard was about $5K which is outrageous, but then again it’s running 12 x 3.5 drives plus maybe some SSD drives as well.

You can swap the network cards from 1/2/5/10GB

And of course you can expand the drives bays to more than 12 on it

Runs ZFS which would be good like BTRFS giving extra warning that a drives had been males.

Unless some on this forum can explain which be better but, both both DFS are very good for redundancies.

That particular box is probably too expensive until you live in a county where you can get it less than USD$5000, though remember it’s designed to be playing multi streamed multi, plus potentially download new medic at the same time as well.
I’m imagine it would’ve somewhat noiisey with the various cooling running. Running.

I could imagine that a home build box for 8 drives is going to be noisily as well. Even a Norco cases or similar.

And of course make sure you get drives from different batches - the last thing you want if multiple drives are all drive from a sinilarv

Still all seems expensive, even if you bill youtbown old box require

I guess the other thing is not to keep everythijng and only keep stuff you really want. Would be interested what the cost to keep a unit like this with drive running 24/7 or do you spin down for 12-14 days a day?

I know some of the Freemasons/rruenas software and unRAID allows you to add on different size drives, what what sort of problem is going to run into - then there are things like a UPS do you use that as well to keep nice clean square 50Hz wave running to the NAS hardware all the time.

Finally, there is the brand of drives that you add together. I like these DCSTAR exterprive NAS drives, especially the remanufactured ones - there are a few different WD drives and then you read articles that people are running the seagate Ironwolf NAS drives. All see to be get. From what I understand 8TB and up are all very similar in terms of performance, all helium filled drives - there are some cheaper 5400/5900 drives but if you can after them then the 7200RRM would be a better choice, just generate more heat.

It’s not the ideal time to be buying hardware and drives at the moment atm with out AUD down and potentially falling further.

One day I’ll get a decent NAS box going but realky it comes down to money.

    Apologies for the long powers.

    .

      • +2

Because there are so many videos on YT, I would even know where to start!

I started off talkinging about the Shield TV pro still ding on of the best on the mark, then I enough talking about a NAS.

You are right though I did write a lot of works, but I’ve also had the 3015 and the 2019 Shield and whether that video agrees with me / I agree with the video, it’s for the - yes, it’s old but definitely still does the job.

        • +1

@dman1 "… yes, it’s old but definitely still does the job."

Couldn't agree more. I have had the 2017 Pro model still running after 6 years. In conjunction with a decent NAS box, this platform is still the best platform, Android or otherwise.

@ $250.20, this is definitely a good buy for the Pro model. While there may or may not be a new model coming out next year, it matters not. Every time this unit has a good price drop, speculation abound around this time or year speculating to hold off because there's potentially a new model on it's way.

Support for the Shield is fantastic by the way, imho. There a regular updates that are always transparent with a "What's New" accompanying if you want to see what changes are to be made, else your can skip.

My only gripe is that even with integrated external storage, too many cannot be moved to this and have to remain on the device's main storage. This is bothersome with some of the bloatware and bloated games which keep getting bigger and taking even more system storage forcing your to either skip the update or removing some apps to make more storage space available.

          Recommended buy either way.

          • @et tu brute: Try enabling Developer Options > Force allow apps on external.

It stops apps from being able to dictate whether they can only be installed on the internal storage. Although note that some apps are glitchy if installed on external storage

    • +1

The Nvidia Shield 4K HDR Pro is kind of like the Swiss Army knife of streaming devices. First off, it's great for anyone who's into super sharp, high-quality visuals. With its 4K HDR, watching anything on this is like a feast for your eyes. Seriously, the colors pop in a way that makes regular TV look dull.

Now, if you're into gaming, this thing's a beast. It's not just about streaming your favorite shows; it's got some serious gaming chops. The Tegra X1+ processor inside means games run smooth as butter. Whether you're streaming from your PC or diving into cloud gaming, it doesn't skip a beat. It's like having a mini gaming console that also happens to be an entertainment center.

The audio? It's top-notch. If you've got a decent sound system at home, you're in for a treat. The Shield Pro supports Dolby Atmos and DTS-X, so it's like being in a movie theater or right in the middle of your game. Everything just sounds richer and more immersive.

Now, for the interface - it's super user-friendly. It runs on Android TV, so you have access to all the usual apps and streaming services. Plus, it's smart home friendly with Google Assistant and Alexa. It's pretty cool to just say what you want to watch and have it play automatically.

And for anyone who's big on downloading content, the storage situation is pretty sweet. You've got 16GB built-in, and you can expand it if you need more. Plus, there's a built-in Plex Media Server, which is awesome if you like to keep your own library of shows and movies.

In a nutshell, the Nvidia Shield 4K HDR Pro isn't just another gadget for your TV. It's like the heart of your home entertainment setup. Whether you're a hardcore gamer, a movie fanatic, or just someone who loves binge-watching Netflix, this thing's got you covered. It's a real crowd-pleaser in the online community, and for good reason. It's just that cool.

Oh yeah, I was writing about the Sheild and got sidetracked on the NAS.

The Shield 2019 is still a very good though sometimes overpriced media player, but definitely very capable.

The Nvidia Shield and Shield Pro are still keeping up some software development, but not as fast as sound of us would like.

Plex gives you pretty reliable DV-HDR.

If you are a fan of KODI then eventually they will get DV- HDR oncehj up FFMPEG update their different, air at i but not SDR should iit works fine.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s a shame they aren’t keeping the hardswre up to date, but so far except for some occasional dropped frames it’s a pretty solid machine and beats most of the smart TV players hands down.

You can get it cheaper if you look around but I agree with what’s have said, it’s software refs some work and the hardware is still very good.

I still haven’t seen a box like it that is getting software updates quite a different year out differ

There are different Android boxes which are running Android 10 and while the look to be good

There.are are launchers which get rid of those ads if you follow the instructions.as a long time use I still think it’s been hard to beat this until and I acknowledge it’s not perfect, but it’s pretty lock rock solid media until they install the decide to maybe put back in a SSD drive and fix the differe a bit more with CPU, but find me another until that isn’t a mini PC and they if issues if there any, I’ll probably stick with it as long as I can.

I know Amazon are updating their Fire Stick more commonly - possibly even , it may get to a point the Amazon increases in coir power, but they have different interface. Having the Android TV inside bad. Some I guess that leaves the Chromecast with Google TV which though it’s a bit lacking in the hardware it’s designed to do things a bit differently.

  • Been happy with the 2017 model the past couple of years. Haven’t come across any video streams it couldn’t decode on Stremio / Torrentio, and works flawlessly with Moonlight and Sunshine, especially connecting gaming controllers direct to the Shield and streaming games from PC in the other room.

  • Perfect for my Plex. Not running server on it though as sharing and most is UHD. Don't think able to transcode more then 1 if external user. So much quicker then fires stick.

  • I doubt Nvidia will release a new model until the Switch-2 comes out, since they mostly use the same SoC.

  • Does anyone know how to stop YouTube ads?

    • +3

SmartTube. You'll need to sideload the app, but once it's installed you'll never use YouTube again. It also skips ads within the content such as sponsorships and self promotion etc.

      • This worked a charm.
        Thankyou

    • Buy Premium from Turkey. Use a custom app.

      • Does this still work? I think mine expired but my payment method is being rejected.

      • +1

        Smartube worked a charm. 😄

  • Damn.. thats a good price.. looks like the shield will finally be getting an upgrade .. given the recent AI stuff.. not surprising.. I think I paid more for mine pre Covid
