Nice… N40L $231.05 delivered. If only I needed another one!

    • +13

Just a show of Hands : please vote + on this comment if you have more than 1 N40L!

    • foobar, do you use the 5th SATA for the SSD to boot? I find it slower even with hacked bios.
I just stuck the SSD in to bay 1 and level it up with some paper.

      • I've got the SSD bracketed up in the 5.25 slot, the 4 bays all have 3TB drives. Looking to add another one via the esata port at some point, not sure it'll talk to a 3TB yet though.

As I'm using it pretty much only as a NAS and WSUS server, bootup speed isn't something I'm worried about. The SSD uses next to no power so while the main drives aren't in use, it's consuming as little as possible other than being turned off.

    • The N40L is "old" now - near a year, there may be a replacement eventually, I damn well hope so.
I have 3 N40L's but I need just one of them to be a bit faster, fingers crossed it comes soon.

any deals on the 330 240gb or samsung (beat the previous deal from centrecom?)

        i dont have a sata3 Mobo so cant really utilise a 520

Excellent work - makes it easier to read for me :).

For those that really love the reliability of Intel 520 series but cannot afford that extra bits, I have added this model as an option

including shipping? XD i think ive seen a $199 deal before
or you can do $199 + shipping as that is a variable amount

        • Mind if you help me find the link?

        • sorry having trouble locating it using ozb search, too many ssd deals!
but i have been finding lots of the 120gb for $89-99 + shipping.

Shouldnt be matching it, but beating those deals anyway =) You guys have built a great rep here because of it

From a $/gb perspective the 240 gb should be equivalent or better…not more expensive =)

also, id rather much prefer a deal on the intel 330

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81139
i believe there was a deal for $175.39 for the 240gb

match that and id get TWO!

Shouldnt be matching it, but beating those deals anyway =) You guys have built a great rep here because of it <==

we beat them by $3 on the price and beat their shipping by maybe $10 or more? with one of the comment in the thread: shipping $19.80 to NSW
Our shipping to NSW from $9.85

also, id rather much prefer a deal on the intel 330 <== no deal on this series yet and we don't have the 240GB in our warehouse atm.

        • what about these guys

oh btw, i have been pleading in almost every one of your posts to do a samsung GS3 16gb deal for under $499 delivered.

I am after 2 ssds and 2 GS3's. Come on, my cash is just waiting for you to take! if you could offer it at the same time, then we can save on some shipping too!

        • hehe… thanks for being so keen. We do not have GS3 in stock though, and talking of a bargain for it is too early at this stage.

        • +1
  • is there any value putting SSD in these?
I only ask because the website says "goes great with… ssd"

    • You could use a SSD and 3 HDD's.

The SSD would be used for hosting applications + services and the OS, and the 3 HDD's could be used purely for storage (Perhaps in RAID 5?).

    • It depends what you are using it for. It will result in faster boot, read and write times.

    • Yes. Use the SSD on the fifth SATA as a boot drive and then you can have 4x data drives. That's what I've done.

  • Getting an RMA and then a refund took many weeks for me,and then constant promises for a refund were never met. Even the RMA i had to keep chasing up.

This company told me the refund would be the next day, once approved after 5 days of constant calling daily it was received.

Great prices, im vary wary now as its a pain in the ass to get anything replaced/refunded and i only did one.

    • +14

Will appreciate that you can PM me your case so we can review what had gone wrong.
As even this case's over - i am very interested in knowing slightly more details about this issue and find out which part we did inadequately in arranging the refund. This can identify whether there are some loopholes from our refunding/RMA process or is due to unintentional negligence from individuals.

We are also happy to arrange a $20 Discount Voucher for causing you the inconvenience and inconsistency in our promise.

      • +2

I'll take his $20 discount, seeing as I doubt he'll shop with you again. :)

        • Lol actually i do need another drive hmmm

      • +1

Okay i have responded to a previous message where it was taking ages to refund my backorder. The rma and order number is in there.

        i must be lucky :)

  • pay day today, well tonight. I'm probably getting a second N40L it seems.

  • Rep - any insight into the price drop, HP playing nice? Scorptec and NegaBuy both dropped their prices overnight, now you too.

    • I wished i have that ability :). Right now - we just go with the flow and offer what we can for our great supporters: the best price on the market :).

  • Doesn't have the hard disk

    • Rep made that clear in bold - HP N40L (Diskless version) - now $219 + Shipping

There's only so much info you can stuff into the title :)

    • who really cares about a 250gb sata drive anyway? that's generally the first thing that gets removed from the htpc :)

use a 2tb drive for boot or USB stick instead

      • 250GB actually makes a great OS disk without the need to partition, but an SSD would be even better. Still, a worthy sacrifice for the reduced price.

        • I'm not an IT guy, but why do people insist on a separate boot drive in these? If it's going to be filled with big hard disks, surely it could coexist with your data? Would save a bit of power over having a separate disk running for a ~20gig OS install

        • +1

I use a 60G SSD as the boot drive in order to save as much power as possible, the other HDD's spin down when not in use and the SSD uses next to nothing, so it can make sense to use a separate boot drive.

Also good if you want to RAID the other 4 too.

        • +4

I prefer to isolate my OS whether that is physically or logically. If I need to upgrade the OS, none of my media is affected. If I'm tweaking codecs and things go hay-wire, I can easily restore.

If only using the OS disk for watching live TV, all other disks will spin down. It does add a little heat and use more energy which is why an SSD would be by far the better option as it gives you best of both worlds (OS isolated, quiet, energy efficient).

        • why do people insist on a separate boot drive in these?

Well, it you are running a software RAID (or UNRAID) then you need to boot the software from somewhere, since until it's running there is no big hard disk space to access.

Personally I use a USB stick and the internal header for this, but if you are stuck with a fat OS (eg Windows) then reuse of the 250GB makes sense.

Oh, and if you use the 250GB as a temporary cache disk you can sidestep the slow write speeds of a RAID array with parity.

        • On laptops for example they only give you a recovery disk. When you reinstall/fix Windows, it replaces everything on C: drive with the DVD/recovery data.
Basically it formats C:. Similar thing if you upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, it wants to overwrite all your stuff you even lose all the programs. (Still there but need to reinstall them)

If you had all your media/documents on D: drive (a new partition or a different drive) you media is saved.

  • I've got a spare 60GB SSD sitting here I was gonna put in my HTPC, but can put it in this instead.

Going to put in 2x3TB drives too, and leave my Synology 211j as a backup with 2x2TB drives in it. Got a full licensed copy of Windows Server 2008 already, but should I use that or buy WHS11? It'll only be used as a NAS and sabnzbd download box for my 2 HTPC's.

Think I should go for it?

    • +1

Go for it :) I would try WHS11 given you don't need any of what Server 2008 offers, but would I pay for WHS11 if I already had Server 2008? Probably not.

      • Tempted… And found out I can still fairly easy remote into it from my iPad to change file names and move files, just not as easy as on the Synology!

Decisions decisions… Can get WHS11 and 2x3TB Seagate drives for $372 delivered and then the N40L for a total price of $603. Hmm that's a lot of money to spend on storage.

        • But $603 is for storage, software and a PC. I doubt anyone could build anything remotely as powerful for a similar price (or cheaper if it were Server 2008).

        • Stop tempting me! Haha.. Damn it I should just bite the bullet and buy it. But don't want buyers remorse once I can't do a few things as easily as I can on my Synology!

      • If you already have an unused licence for server 2008 (and know how to use it) why not use it.
I found WHS11 frustrating trying to achieve things that would be straight forward in Server 2008.

        • I tend to agree. Unless you're going to use the client backup utility - I don't really see the advantage to WHS11 (which admittedly I am using but only because I'm too lazy to reinstall, and because I use only it as a Host OS). If you have the licence for 2008, just use that instead. WHS11 is really just 2008 with some limitations and user friendly GUIs to configure things.

        • Hmm that's true. I've also been looking at putting OpenMediaVault on it as well, looks interesting and has just a web GUI which is what the Synology has and what I'd like to stay with. I want something that I can, if I need to, completely control from my iPad which I can do now with my Synology. That is, downloading NZB's to sabnzbd, then once it's done I can change the file name and transfer it to the right folder. Fairly simple things that I just want to be sure I can do easily on my iPad/iPhone.

  • I'm so tempted!

  • I think its gone already. The link doesn't work

  • -8

Uh, any chance I can get return the 250gig hdd that I got in your latest deal in return for the $30 discount.

    • Buyers remorse is the consumers problem.

      Caveat emptor!

  • +1

Oh man… just bought a diskless one two days ago for $249. >.<

    • I'm glad that I'm not the only one this happens to ;)

  • Damn just brought last weekend for $249 lol

    What a shocking CPU
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Turion+II+Neo+N4…

I was looking to upgrade my HTPC which is quite a few years old now, but this one is more than 3x slower :(

    • +2

It's more than adequate for its intended purpose. With a halfway decent GPU it's also more than adequate for HTPC use as many can attest to.

    • +1

If processing power is your main requirement then yeah, your 3 year old CPU will be much better. This is a CPU aimed at consuming as little power as possible, yet offers enough grunt to host files, run 4 or so disks as a light-weight server. When you consider power consumption of your desktop CPU, I'm almost certain that the CPU on it's own will consume more power than the entire server loaded with 4 HDD's and a GPU.

    • It's a low power solution that can be used to effectively serve up data storage and maybe a bunch of printers. (Why not?)

  • +2

Seeing that there may be a need to have a 60GB SSD in today's sale, i've added this model:
    OCZ 60GB - $49 after discount code
    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/ocz-agility-3-2.5-inch…

    • +2

Why not ship it or any of the SSD's for free if purchased with the N40L :)

Should fit in the same box easily and add nothing extra to the shipping cost anyways.

      • +2

I don't think we charge extra for the shipping when you buy together the N40L and SSD. I just checked some orders coming in and they appear to have zero extra freight charges.

        • +4

Excellent, double the bargain. Gotta say even though I've never bought from you (yet), I'm fairly impressed.

You've got a great deal made better by the free shipping for additional small items, you've sorted out the issues of a previous customer completely to his satisfaction and you conduct yourself extremely well - some reps can be … well .. you know.

        • +4

I bought my N40L from ShoppingExpress for $265 + shipping (including the 250Gb HDD), after 'encouraging' the rep to do better on price - which never happened.

When they dropped the price a week or so later, I contacted the rep, who was kind enough to sort me out with a generous discount on my next purchase. Can't complain about that or the prompt service.

In my book, good prices + good service = repeat business, so I'll be back…

        • +2

I know this goes against what ozbargain stands for but when a rep is helpful and prompt and they offer good deals like they have been I'm happy to spend a couple of extra bucks on items that I would have purchased from other outlets.

    • rep can you do a deal on the samsung or Intel 330 248gb?

    • ShoppingExpressman: Have you heard of new microservers coming yet?

  • far out, so tempted, that intel 520 240GB is a bloody steel,.. i really have been waiting for this one, i think ill have to get it at this price and sell my sandisk extreeme

    • i was looking into getting a sandisk extreme, whats the benefits of the intel over it?

  • -2

What's the benefit of ssd oppose to a standard hard dirsk

    • +8

Dude you need to use Google.

    • +3

and get out from under that rock…

    • +7

To put it simply, in your computer you have a CPU and RAM that are incredibly fast and by comparison, a mechanical HDD is appallingly slow.

A SSD - Solid State Drive - does not have any moving parts and stores all data on NAND flash memory, which is (compared to a mechanical HDD) much, much faster.

Your old HDD is a massive bottleneck, an SSD is the solution. I've upgraded some PC's that were near unusable with nothing but an SSD and the difference was astonishing. A malware cleanup doesn't hurt either.

      • Thanks for exaplanation

    • +1

      positives

      • much faster
      • quicker read times
      • afaik saves power
      • no noise

      negatives

      • $/gb not as good
      • "harder" to reclaim data if corrupt.
      • will wear out over time
      • +1

The positives greatly outweight the negatives though, don't let the negatives affect your purchase decision.

Yes, with an SSD you need to perform regular backups, just in case it dies a premature death. The best way to do this is to have Windows do a scheduled backup to a secondary hard drive.

        • i agree, just had to make a TLDR version

        • I've got a mate that I just can't convince about SSD's.

Whenever I go over to visit and need to start up his PC for whatever reason, it's excruciating. It sits there and grinds and grinds as windows tries to start god knows how many things at once which are all apparently as far apart as possible on the HDD.

  • My problem is buying four hard disks at once to run a raid 0. Not the cost of the N40L :(

  • +2

Can our friends at shoppingexpress dazzle us with the best deal OB has ever seen on one Samsung Galaxy S3?

    I've laid down the challenge.

    nice deals :D

  • Meh!!!

  • Do you have in stock 2 x 4gb ram that could be placed in the server?

    • +1

      Hi gamernz,

This is the matching pair for the server and you can add 2 of this to your order:
      http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/kingston-4gb-ddr3-1333…

      Cheaper non-ecc version link below:
      http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/kingston-kvr1333d3n9-4…

      • Any chance you could match this price? http://www.scorptec.com.au/computer/47105-kvr13e94i/OCHP

        • looks slightly different model number - and we don't have that in stock. The ECC model we selling is the same model as what's inside the N40L, albeit 4GB opposed to 2GB.

      • If you buy the 4gb non ecc version (what does the ecc make better any way) can you just add it in along side the 2gb that is already there, or do i have to take it out and only have 4gb total rather than 6?

Also, these have an internal usb port right? I am planning on running freenas on it, should i get a 60gb ssd, or how large of a usb drive would i need? Just trying to work out pricing.

        • You do need to take out the ECC ram if you use the non ecc version & generally speaking ECC RAM gives you more reliability. However more details on the technical part of the RAM - i leave for the experts to comment.

There are around 7 x USB 2.0 ports for the N40L.

        • Thanks for the response about the RAM. Not really worried about reliability, just a home server. Do you have it in a 8gb kit as well?

With the usb, was more looking for any user opinions on where they install their OS, using a usb drive, or buying an ssd worthwhile?

        • We do not have the kit version in stock, so you do need to buy 2 of them individually.
