Compromised Coles Prepaid MasterCard?

My Coles Mastercard prepaid card balance summary on mybalancenow.com was showing the card's full loaded value available to use when I made a purchase on Amazon last night. No transactions were listed. No amounts were shown to be deducted.

The card had not been opened or used prior and I was logged into mybalancenow at the same time and also for the first time when I placed my Amazon order.

Today, Amazon sent a failed payment notice and mybalance has several charges from Tiktok that has depleted my card. The Tiktok transactions all have the same time stamp of 2 minutes after placing my Amazon order.

I rang up the card's customer service but they are claiming the card was depleted back in January. They do not see the current Tiktok transactions at all. I do not see the transactions they claim. I had them confirm the card number.

I've changed my Amazon password. The item I ordered was sold and fulfilled by Amazon AU. I'm hesitant to use a bank card as an alternate payment method in case Amazon is compromised just in case.

Though from the card's c.s. it sounds like the issue is with the Coles card.

Does anyone have a similar experience?

  • Did you make the payment on your phone? Or on a PC? Could something be infected on the machine you used, logging the keys you typed? I would have blamed coles, but the very close timing with the tiktok purchases makes me wonder if it may be something on your end.

    • It was made on a PC using Linux

That rules out most viruses then 😆 — I would say that only leaves the Coles card as the culprit.

  • sounds like you might have a keylogger

  • Several charges from TikTok..

What are charges from TikTok? Didn’t know you could actually spend money on TikTok

    • I don't have a Tiktok account or use it. The charges simply state Tiktok with an accompanying alphanumeric invoice or transaction number?

  • When you said, "I rang up the card's customer service but they are claiming the card was depleted back in January. They do not see the current Tiktok transactions at all. I do not see the transactions they claim. I had them confirm the card number."

It sounds like recycled credit card number but no matter, I think Coles is the where the issue is

  • I recall several months back there are some forum posts that warn others in regards to fraudulent activities on the Coles prepaid credit card. I am thankful i saw that - and quickly cash out thereafter.

    depleted back in January

Have you held onto this card for 11months? and just found out that it's been compromised?

I opened the card and checked the balance before immediately using it at Amazon. It had the full loaded value available to use.

In hindsight, I think the operator may have gotten confused with the Australian date format. I think it was a Phillipines call centre where they are more familiar with the US date format of month/day/year? Yesterday being the 1st they could have misunderstood it for January.

What worries me the most was the Tiktok transactions happening 2 minutes after placing my Amazon order.

      • Just to clarify, when exactly did you purchase the gift card? Was it within the last few days? I hope it all gets resolved soon.

      • These Coles MasterCards have known vulnerabilities that allow thieves to guess the card and expiry combos and deplete them, going by previous OzB posts. It could be entirely coincidental that yours got drained immediately after you entered it into Amazon if you can rule out vulnerabilities on your end.

      • I don't think it's Amazon.

You said you checked the balance before using the card. It could be a spoofed my balance.com website or wherever you checked the balance.
