Switching nbn to a Different Provider

I have been with my internet provider for more than 5 years now and happy with it's service. Was not thinking to move to a different provider considering the internet speed was good through out.

I have a belief that internet provider does matter and speed varies based on that (this belief is from ADSL days). But wanted to validate if this is still true with NBN world ? Or now it is similar to electricity and gas where providers are just a medium but it always comes from one source and speed will continue to be the same as my current provider.

I have tried them all and I mean all of them and thought the same thing it doesn't matter who you go with or what brand it is the NBN right. Wrong I have Optus it is a bit more expensive but the connection is stronger and more stable than the smaller Telcos. The only issue I have with Optus is that big outage a few weeks back was a that was a pain. But hopefully won't happen agian.

    • This is a bit contradictory isn't it saying that Optus is more stable, then in the next sentence mentioning their massive outage?

One big national outage =/= lots of constant dropouts, which is definitely worse.

this so far from the truth Optus is rubbish

  • It is possible to have speed varying between providers.
Each provider pays for a different amount of bandwidth for all of their customers to share at a certain location (good explanation here from Aussie Broadband). As far as I know, the vast majority of providers have enough and this will only be an issue for specific providers and specific areas.
Your internet traffic does end up going through your provider's systems at some point on its journey, however again there shouldn't be a noticable difference in speed here.
So you should consider moving around. Unless you want a modem/router, there's no lock-in contracts, so it's really easy to just jump to another provider if you have a bad experience.

Isn't the recent NBN change remove the CVC 'issue', though providers will still be limited by their upstream interconnect and peering arrangements

CVC is gone for speed tiers of 100Mbps and above since last week. The graphs now show Aussie's full NNI link port speed at your nbn POI.

It's still true, but probably less so these days.
The good part is you can jump around with virtually no downtime. (zero downtime if you have have FttP)

It's still true. You are limited to the max speed of your nbn connection type and the speed that you choose from your ISP. The ISP manages backhaul links, peering, POPs, latency and there are ISPs that don't offer all the speed tiers. Some ISPs perform better than others even on the same speed tier.

  • Still true based on experience. We've had the odd connectivity issue with our ISP (MATE), and we had to troubleshoot with their tech team, resulting in some redirects / rerouting here and there. Ended up being much smoother afterwards.

So it depends how each ISP handles traffic going through their systems, but generally it shouldn't be noticeable.

  • Time to experience being a dodo?

  • I have been with all of them and you really got two cost effective options if you are a high speed user Leaptel or Superloop is you best bet. if you're only a 100mbps user Superloop, Tangerine or Leaptel is your go to.

  • Thanks everyone.
