  • Is this good for somebody who just utilised the gym for daily workouts?

    • I was going to ask the same question but it looks like overkill.

      • +3

You could definitely use it for the gym and it would be quite nice for tracking sets and planning workouts, but yes it would be a bit overkill. A vivoactive or instinct would have similar gym abilities and be significantly cheaper, but definitely not as premium or rugged as the Epix.

I would think it's worthwhile to get the more premium watch but your priorities may be different.

    • Yes and no. The use case of these watches are predominantly for outdoor workouts. Garmin have got a 'strength training' activity profile that you can use but it will require backend work to match your specific workout routine. However, if you just want it to generically track using set timers and heart rate info it's great (this is what I do nowadays).

Check out DCRainmaker reviews - he might elaborate on indoor uses.

      Still a great watch though.

I think it's a waste of time to use a fitness tracker at the gym unless you're doing a purpose-built cardio plan. Even then you could just use a cheap fitbit or similar flavour.

    • I bought one on Black Friday sales for just that prupose. Is it overkill? Yeah. Does it do it well? Also yes. Is it an amazing looking watch and is my daily wear? Again yes.

I prefer it over my Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.

  • Is this the lowest price yet for this watch?

Its probably one of the best overall fitness watches out there for people on either IOS or Android.

    • It was also this price on Amazon for BF a few weeks ago. It was cheaper on Kogan at $779 ($799 standard / $779 for Kogan First).

Was also available from their eBay store for $801 minus $70 for with BF code.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/816525

Received mine from this deal, agree it is the best overall fitness watch I could find (with advanced features in mind).

  • Wishful thinking but would love a deal on the Epix Pro, my wife is due for an upgrade and the standards are far too big for her wrist

    • Best I could find was around $1350 (47mm sapphire) with the ebay bf deal and an afterpay deal. I'm sure it will go lower before or just after Christmas.

  • is this worth upgrade from 955?

  • crazy good deal for sapphire

  • I want Epix pro. Will wait for next years BF sale and claim gst. May be ePix 3 will launch by then.

  • Wearing mine now after upgrading from Fenix 5X plus.

Screen is beautiful, vivid, and visible at any angle, in any light.

HR monitoring is very fast and accurate, another good upgrade from previous versions.

Touch is a great feature but I still find myself using the buttons out of habit.

Customisable Shortcuts using the buttons are a good idea, such as to turn off Touch.

Got more than a week out of it after opening the box, without further charging. Think it was sitting around 70% from memory. Display and heart rate always on, of course.

Very happy with it. Would definitely recommend.

    • I expected this to be a last gen model, but it seems like gen 2 is the latest?

Garmin seems to cut all their models so closely it makes choosing a model a bit tricky doesn't it. well at least their are more finer options/differences so some customers can find a model that's just right.

I think one thing you didn't mention. Epix gen 2 has a torch. (well Fenix does too right? but it must be handy)

      • Only the Pro version has a torch.

        • oh damn my mistake. I did a quick search which said it did, but watched a video just now. the Epix Gen 2 torch is just "the screen lighting up".

gettin all confused with these model names. Fenix, Enduro, Epix. I thought Epix was at the top.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: I think Marq is at the top.
Epix is an AMOLED screen, Fenix range is MIP.
Tactix is a military focused Fenix, but also as of now has an AMOLED model too.
Epix (gen 2) is the most recently superseded model, with the Epix Pro now the current model in that lineup.
My gen 2 does not have a torch. Not too fussed, but I reckon there'd be people who would use it.

            • @Rogue01: thanks for catching me up. there are more models than I thought.
so in no particular order. Fenix, Enduro, Tactix, Epix, Epix Pro, Marq.

Garmin must be really doing well with this expensive range, since there arent nearly as many options in the budget range of Venu SQ and Venu models.

"Epix (gen 2) is the most recently superseded model, with the Epix Pro now the current model in that lineup. "

I was looking for "Epix gen 3" and couldnt' find one. so Epix gen 2 is the previous model and Epix Pro is the gen 3. so deal price makes more sense now.

              • @harshbdmmaster718: Yeah I guess that's one way of looking at it. I don't know what the 'gen 1' was and why they feel the need to differentiate it so much to their usual naming scheme.

The Fenix range also has the S model (smaller) and X model (larger).

And then there can also be a Solar, Sapphire, or Sapphire Solar variant of each 😆

                • @Rogue01: "I don't know what the 'gen 1' was and why they feel the need to differentiate it so much to their usual naming scheme."

I think gen 1 Epix was just "Epix". then gen 2 was "Epix (gen2)".
I think they called gen 3 "Epix Pro" because there was enough in a particular feature to differentiate it ( I don't know what), but yeah the cheeky answer to that is they just wanted to squeeze in another model name lol. I mean I understand it from both sides though, makes it complicated for some but for others it gives more opportunity to find the perfect combination of features, e.g. one model with Solar, Flashlight, OLED etc.

"The Fenix range also has the S model (smaller) and X model (larger)."
yeah I don't count those as extra models. their other lower tier models have those designations too. e.g. Venu 3 S and Instinct 2 S etc. the lower models just don't have the "larger" option. large option would just be Instinct 2.

I admit I don't have much on an opinion on Sapphire. I am just happy with whatever "gorilla glass" is on most models. never had an issue with a scratch or ding. although I did put a screen protector on my most recent smartwatch.

                • @Rogue01: Does Sapphire mean anything in the Epix models? I have discount Rebel vouchers which make their Epix more attractive. I can't see if Sapphire is a colourway or what? You make it sound like an upgrade on the glass?

                  • +1

@dealbrowser: The glass is an upgrade, as is the bezel (titanium, from steel). There is also double the internal storage, and multi band GPS. Sapphire is the term they use to differentiate the sapphire glass models, but in many models it's also small upgrades like above too. Not enough for a new series, but more than just a colour. Same applies to the Fenix series.
I've only had sapphire models of Fenix and now the Epix, and can testify to their ruggedness. Not a scratch on my Fenix sapphire and it's been through a lot, and lots of situations I've smashed it against metal and cement and thought Ah fugg there goes my watch only to see.. nothing at all - no damage. For me, it's a small price difference for significant durability and peace of mind in my investment.

                    • @Rogue01: sounds like you put your watch through more than I do 😅.

maybe the only thing I worry about with my garmin is the occasional door frame and rock.

                      • @harshbdmmaster718: Yeah it's seen many places and people. I've had it ripped off my arm twice - the bands, even genuine, are not as durable as the watch. eBay/Ali bands are 90% cheaper with half the quality, so I just get those when it happens. I know the watch survives even if my band doesn't.

                        • @Rogue01: "eBay/Ali bands are 90% cheaper with half the quality,"

yeah I found the same thing. cheaper to buy bulk and cycle the Aliexpress bands than it is to get the original. although my cheapo is doing just fine so far because I am not man handling it lol. even though mines not an Epix I am very conscious of taking care of it because it was expensive to me and I want it to last.

                    • @Rogue01: Awesome, thanks for taking the time to explain!

              • @harshbdmmaster718: Epix Pro is not Gen 3, it is more of an incremental upgrade than a brand new generation and probably why they named it as such.

Since Garmin back port new software features, the only difference in hardware is the 2 new sizes (Small and X-Large), flashlight, and new V5 HR sensor, compared to the Epix Gen 2 Sapphire. Otherwise they look visually almost identical in the same size.

The V5 HR sensor is already out in other models (Venu 3, Fenix 7 Pro) and the accuracy difference is very slight if at all (though is more future proof when it comes to roadmap SW) as V4 is already excellent. So realistically the flashlight is the biggest real differencr, which is handy, but we are talking a $500+ difference between the two.

I can live without since I'm happy with the standard Epix size. It's almost current gen hardware and features but at a big discount.

                • @Soothsayer: "So realistically the flashlight is the biggest real differencr, which is handy, but we are talking a $500+ difference between the two."

ok you mean LED flashlight right? because google also told me Epix gen 2 also had a flashlight, but it turns out it's just circular bars on the OLED screen.

but still, yeah LED flashlight for extra $500? that's a no from me as well.

                  • @harshbdmmaster718: Correct, it's equivalent to lighting up the display in white. Same as turning on your phone screen in the dark basically. It's good enough to see things in front of you in the middle of the night but it isn't going to light up a space if you need to find something, if that makes sense.

TBH I can imagine always having an LED flashlight on your wrist you can activate in 1s is really useful, but for $500+ I'll settle for using my phone flashlight in an extra few seconds lol. Maybe in ~2 years time when Epix Pro is discounted it will be tempting, but not for now!

                    • @Soothsayer: just searched to confirm Epix Pro has a LED flashlight and it indeed does. and then got even more confused about garmin's line up when a link to Garmin support mentioned "Epix Pro (gen 2)". 😂

one other downside to the on-screen OLED display flashlight, is the angling you will need to face the watch towards what you want to see which doesn't sound ergonomic to me. much better to have that actual LED on the top of the watch pointing forwards.

but yeah phone does just fine. I know some people have that tiny keychain torch as well which probably is just as bright.

  • This doesn't include Solar does it?

    • +1

      Not in the Epix range

    • +1

you should really be on the look out for "Solar" in the title (either ozbargain post or the page it links to).

it's a feature that's big enough to put there so I always see it. even on Instinct models.
