Refund from Hotel Due to Issues but Not Full Amount - Is This Fair?

I'm on holidays and booked a hotel for three nights. When I checked in and arrived inside the room, I noticed many issues. These started with serious things like mould on walls and bathroom, paint chips on the floor and general uncleanliness.

I spoke to the receptionist and complained asking for a refund, she agreed but referred off to the booking site I used as she could not process the refund. I contacted the booking site, sent photos to as what was advertised was completely different.

I paid roughly $400 for the three nights. I have received a refund of $370. This is due to "cleaning the room we used" as when we arrived, we needed to change the baby's nappy.

Is this price discrepancy fair of thirty dollars for that only? I could take the win that they refunded me very easily and could've made my holiday a bit of a nuisance. I've had to book somewhere else last minute and more expensive (albeit massively better). I also think that I am entitled due to the blatant disregard in the first place that none of this should have happened.

Most folk could have earned the missing $30 in the time it took you to post this

    • Maybe, but nothing beats having a whinge.

Yes you should be entitled to a full refund, but really up to you if you want to go through the hassle for thirty bucks.

Either way don't worry about it til you're back at home.

You used the room and exposed it to human shit. $30 is a bargain.

Wtf. You got 370 of 400 and wondering if it's OK. Next you'll be expecting cash rewards.

You confront us with nothing really to compare.
I just did a European tour with several Airbnb stays.
None of the properties I had stayed fulfilled all the stuff it had advertised. Noisy rooms, Poor beds, restricted hours and access to bathrooms.
Additional house rules like this is a vegan house you may not bring in meat etc were additional surprises.
Hotels know what a mess they provide and feel only to do similar things.
Modern times, just suck it up!!

Where is this holiday you're on? If you're in Australia, I wouldn't be expecting much for $400 for 3 nights.

And seriously.. you're on holidays! Quit complaining about $30 and just enjoy the time with the family.

  • I could take the win that they refunded me very easily

The fact they refunded you without hassle, I wouldn't be complaining over being $30 short. You did use the 'room', it did need to be cleaned.

Enjoy your holiday, sure its one less cocktail, but still.

I hope you can sleep comfortably knowing you were in $30 deficit and btw that was an affordable "hotel" that you were in 🤣🤭

Well you're certainly entitled, but not to a bigger refund.

Be grateful. Im travelling through Asia atm and none of the rooms have been as described or impressive. The current one in Singapore has paper thin walls and I can hear the neighbours water going (so everytime anyone takes a leak, someone else has to listen to the water system go).
This place was rated 4 star off Orchard Rd.
But it's Harvest Week barrelling into Xmas. What am I going to do? I asked for a room change and was told to pay for an upgrade. It's already Premium.
Seriously, take the money and run.

  • So, to summarise, it is fair.
