Best Value for Money Vacuum Cleaner

Hi everyone,
Can anyone recommend the best barrel vacuum cleaner for under $600. After something with strong performance, would be used for carpet and floorboards.
Appreciate and advice

Work Hero 10L Commercial Vacuum. $79.
I'm not saying its the strongest but for the price you can't go wrong, served me well for over 2 years and still going.
They have a larger version for $179 which may be stronger but have not tried it.

Meile. I had one that was like 10+ years old and still sucked like Nancy Reagan. The controls were in the hose on these older Meile models and a thoughtless housemate treated it like garbage, yanking it around by the hose because he was pissed off at being asked to contribute to cleaning of the (profanity) pigsty he helped make, so it doesn't turn on anymore. So I replaced it with the cheap Kmart one which is terrible quality and he refuses to use it, perhaps scared he'll break it again, and bought his own vacuum cleaner instead. But if I didn't live with some of the most selfish people on the planet I would have replaced it with the Miele cat and dog C6 or whatever the heck it's called.

Do you desire a new one? Best value for money will be a pre-owned Miele (bagged, with power head), per @AustriaBargain.

For $600 you could buy 6 bottom of the range (basic barrel type) Hoover $99 versions. Each would last at least 3-4 years of the same general hard work any family vac does.
    Horses for courses.

*Was not aware Nancy hard a reputable suction skill.I though that was Ronald's claim to fame.

Recently purchased the Bosch GL-30 for $149 on Amazon. It's a fantastic little vacuum for the price. Previously had a Miele C3 and whilst the Bosch doesn't seem as solid, the performance is comparable. It's also really compact and has a regular size bag.

      GL-30 is not fantastic.

No power head and wand thing keeps coming apart

Henry is rated as one of the most reliable vacuums in the UK (not widely available outside UK).

    Get bagless and cyclonic.

  • The best Value for Money Vacuum Cleaner under $600 is Dyson, it even has a good resell value. I would aim it at V8 at least and it works for carpet and floorboards. I do own a Miele, but I hardly use it.

    • Dyson's always seem very plasticy to me, and dirty. A bagged vacuum cleaner has to be better.

      • Dyson's always seem very plastic to me

So true, that's what I thought as well.

      • We bought a Dyson about 13 years ago and haven't had any issues with it. Suction is still great and plastic is still in good condition.

I would consider cordless models would go into a more luxury category. They're worth while for small jobs but are more for convenience.

    • Value, not so sure. They're fairly good, definitely better than most cheaper vacs, but our Dyson stick vacs have a few parts made of soft plastic that wears easily and the power head gets clogged extremely easily. You can buy all the Dyson spare parts easily on Amazon, but the 3rd party replacement battery packs are a bit iffy, if you want to upgrade the standard 20min charge capacity — this is where the more expensive Dyson models $900-$1500 are better (albeit the laser dust detection type features are pointless gimmicks for anything other than a robovac).

For $300-$500 I would look at Kärcher which are super reliable and found at most hardware stores.
For $600-800 Dyson is going to be a good option, in my experience.
If you're willing to spend $1000+ you will be better off with a LG/Samsung, or a robovac.

  • I recently purchased the Bosch Series as I have tiles throughout with a small rug in the lounge room. Extremely happy with the performance and noise level. Paid a little over 200 during black friday sales. Now its 208 from Amazon.

The unit is able to get quite low so it can get under the bed, side tables, buffets etc making a quick tidy of the house very quick and easy.

An added benefit is that the battery is replaceable and interchangeable with my Bosch drill battery's so longevity isn't limited to battery life.

  • I've read good things about Miele, especially the C3.
