The upside of one of these products is it gives you the flexibility to mount it to multiple vehicles without having to get rails for each car and move a rack between them. I purchased one for my bike but I'm yet to use it. If you already have rails on the car then you'd probably be better off getting at traditional bike rack.
I checked out the reviews for bikes only but they also have stuff for boats and fishing as well.
