Scifi Book Series Now on TV

So my mind was totally blown this morning when I happened to be on Amazon and the kindle version of Foundation (Asimov) was on sale. And the words "Now a major TV Series for Apple TV+" appeared before me. Wow! I'm shocked I hadn't heard about this as Foundation is probably my favourite series of all time and I must have read it like 5 times.

What other series are out there and your thoughts on if it's a good adaption and also if it's worth watching?

Comments

  • I'll start with The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan)

On the whole I think it's a "decent" adaption. I mean keep in mind this series if 14 books each about 1000 pages. (Think it was about 25 years from when I started to finished the series.)

Some weird shit that I still don't understand (e-g. end season 1 where Perrin finds all his friends dead but they are back in Season 2 with no explanation).

But overall I've enjoyed watching it and looking forward to Season 3.

    • I am fairly happy with this show although I don't really like a lot of the casting choices.

      • Which ones in particular?

I think Lan stands out to me as a lot different to how I pictured him in the books.

        • Mainly Nynaeve and Egwene.

The TV series adaptation of Foundation is NOTHING like the books. Don't go watching it and trying to compare it against the books. Yes, some of the names are similar but the storyline is entirely different.

3 of my all time favourite sci-fi book series (Foundation, Ender's Game, Chaos Walking) have been made into movies / tv series and they have all greatly deviated from the original books, but Foundation by far deviated the most.

    • I'll watch. Hopefully it's not like the total clusterfek that was the first Dune movie (with Sting).

I'm not a person who is "it must be identical" but OTOH it has to be still good and enjoyable. For example I enjoyed the Reacher movies all the while knowing they were so far away from the books it's not funny.

    • Yes - given the nature of the Second foundation filming pivotal stuff was going to be an ask….. I’ll watch it when it becomes available with good grace though..😁

    • Haven't read the books but I loved Foundation on Apple TV. Heard the genetic dynasty portion wasn't in the books, and it's something that has definitely added to the complexity of the story.

    • I'm about half way through season 1 of Foundation now. Actually enjoying it. Yes a lot different to the books. I would say "loosely based". But worth watching for sure.

There’s a Chinese version of Three Body Problem (called Three-Body) and the western adaptation is out soon.

    • I’ve been watching that - overall a pretty good show with good actors and special effects.

    • Yes, looking forward to this one, hope they don't screw it up.

    • I am looking forward to this. I really loved the book series.

The Expanse series. Really good realistic sci fi series.

Second this. I much preferred the books but the tv series is pretty top notch as well.

  • Foundation was unfilmable, but they found a way in the TV show to make characters last for hundreds of years. Making Empire be clones was a pretty elegant solution, freezing some characters in like stasis pods fairly standard solution, and turning other characters into AI was a bit less elegant. But what are you gonna do. Making a character an immortal robot was pretty clever though.

Silo is pretty good, i would love to see a series made based on larry nivens known space, maybe ringworld.

Brave New World also looks interesting from 2020.

Altered carbon, the 1st season is good, the 2nd season not so much.

The Peripheral was fantastic, seriously underrated.

The Man Who Fell To Earth I thought was ok, but probably not everyone's cup of tea.

    • I thought that The Man Who Fell to Earth was really thought provoking. I might watch it again.

  • Foundation is decent, I thought the storyline with the emperor was fantastic but all the stuff on the Foundation planet was boring and by the numbers. It's almost two shows with different budgets, writing and quality.

  • Haven't read the books but the TV show was an absolute snooze fest. I don't think I made it through a single episode without falling asleep. Most of the characters looked the same and I didn't care about any of them.
