Just Told My New Boss My Favourite Hobby Is Sleeping. Is Sleeping a Hobby?

Met my new manager today, she seems nice and easy to talk to, had a brief talk about the current role what my future plans are as they looking to open another store soon and looking for 2IC.

After a bit of brief talk she asked what my hobbies are, I straight out without thinking said SLEEPING, as it is indeed my hobby……I love to have a 10 to 30 min nap whenever I had a chance………she just burst out laughing. LOL

So…….without talking about my future career in this company……is sleeping actually…..a hobby?

Putting all those star wars stickers on the your dad's car (when he gets it in February) will be exhausting work.

What's the new role and more importantly does it pay more than CBA customer greeting position?

        • I didn't even raise my interest on the 2IC role. She just sort of asked me as I am top sales person 3 months in a row and I barely making any mistakes

  • +1

I would have said OzB (then sleeping).

    • +1

And let her know loads of bargains? Hell no! ROFL 🤣😂

  • +7

Well that's a career limiting move.

    But Ballsy

    I like it.

    • -3

Why is ballsy capitalised? Who is this "Ballsy"? What a weird name

      Is Ballsy your brother, Drakesy?

      • +1

        he is

        • +2

I bet he wears Stubbies shorts
          .

    • +1

      Comes from the heart ❤️

    • Career limiting? Far from it, we don't live in a meritocracy. OP is c-suite material.

      • What's a C-Suite material???? The kind has no hope? LOL

        • +3

Far from it! Senior leadership in fact. Think CEO, COO, CIO, CSO/CNO (Chief Sleeping/Napping Officer which I think would suit you nicely).

  • Sleeping is a lifestyle.

    • Which many of us lacking!

    • Indeed.
Sleeping is another name for WFH.

I feel like sleeping is a pretty common answer?
Which makes me think a lot of us don't get enough, or good quality sleep?
Which makes me think we've be scammed out of life by 8 hours when back in the day people used to sleep, wake up and do stuff, then sleep again. And some people slept during the day.
    Anyway, down with capitalism.

    • And lack of self-discipline.

      • -1

On behalf of my adhd, screw you.
But yeah, my imposter syndrome says yeah, i don't have any discipline.
        But….adhd…no shit sherlock.
Sigh. It's so hard being the screw up who just doesn't have the proper brain wiring.
But not enough to get 'poor you', but enough that people say 'just get your shit together, you're lazy, you don't care.

Sleeping is not my hobby. But sleeping is certainly a hobby or at least part of the hobby of resting / relaxation. My ex loved naps. That's how she enjoyed chilling while I watched TV or played video games throughout the day. She would nap, and do activities that helped her nap better such as get massaged, shower, stretch, listen to ASMR. She purchased noise cancelling headphones to nap better when we're on a drive or flight. So I really can't see how it's not a hobby.

    • +2

Are they your ex because they were always sleeping?

    • How do you not get on well with an napping ex?

      • +9

        She was always sleeping around.

        • Ah!

        • Now that sounds like a real hobby!

  • +1

Saying sleeping as a hobby just means it's highly unlikely she'll engage in conversation with you unless she has to… ;)

    • LOL! I don't get that vibe though…..she seems surprised some idiot will tell their new boss their favourite past time is sleeping…..kind of caught her off guard a bit….lol

  • +2

Next time you see her, tell her you couldn't resist and tell her you're actually into Martial arts…or too embarrassed to say you play Dungeons and Dragons. Whatever, find a real hobby because promotions go to MOTIVATED people.

  • I thought you would have asked her what’s on her garage

    • Haha! Another fan of mine I see lol

  • If it incorporates astral travel or lucid dreaming I’d call it a hobby…

    • I like lucid dreaming…..never able to pull my favourite actress in it…..it's always the Mrs or the Ex….lol

  • +1

It's like saying your favourite hobby is breathing.

If you are at a point that "sleeping" is a hobby, please get your B12, D3, K2, Iron and Heavy Metals levels checked - good chance some of them are abnormal :/

    • I think you might be right…..I do feel tired alot more these days.

How do I check them though? Dr?

      • +1

Speak to your GP and ask for Irons, Fat Soluble Vitamins and Heavy Metal Panels - the doctor may want to add lipids and bloods (most doctors do, but they are less specific)

DEXA scan is also good for assessment of "Visceral Fat", the more visceral fat, the more damaged your metabolism is (so the more tired you are) - it's not linked to how "big" your body is, skinny people can have more visceral fat than larger people!

        • Good suggestion, I might do that as I constantly feel tired these days

      • Surely your next thread and poll. (I'm not serious. Just don't. Let the ink dry on a few of your other fluff pieces, first)

    • Tiredness has lots of possible causes. Depressed people tend to spend most of the day sleeping or just lying around doing nothing. Ditto for people with prominent negative schizophrenic symptoms. Narcolepsy is when you frequently, and abruptly, fall to sleep.

Stimulants are the fix for oversleeping, but unfortunately are tightly controlled in our nanny state, except caffeine, which is only a very weak stimulant and has a different mechanism of action (adenosine receptor antagonism vs dopamine agonism).

hobby is considered to be a regular activity that is done for enjoyment, typically during one's leisure time.

    Wikipedia!!!!

According to this, sleeping is a hobby lol

  • +1

Depends where you work. When I was in the public circus in Qld a couple of staff took regular naps. One under the desk - one of the admin staff loved calling her number, hoping she'd hit her head in shock.

The other didn't bother hiding it, just nodded off at his desk.

    • Sounds just like the public sector……

  • These kinds of shenangians will get you far in life OP. You're a true blue Aussie larrikin mate!

    • Haha, you reckon? Haven't made any mortal enemies yet lol

  • u are like a box of chocolates…..

    dont know what you get
    and waaaaayyyy to much nuts!

  • I would say its more a biological imperative.. you wouldn't nap or sleep if you didn't need it. Is eating hobby?

    • But but wouldn't you love the refresh feeling after a small nap or sleep through? Like the body been recharged!

      • There is more co2 in the atmosphere, meaning these micro naps are really oxygen deprivation, kicking in.

    • +1

Of course it can be. We go out to eat, we get excited to eat at new places when we're on holidays, we have fun in the kitchen making new things, etc…

  • +1

abit early to be drunk at 5pm mate

  • At least you didn’t say your hobby is sleeping with your line managers

    • What's a line manager? We never had one of those, we only have 2IC and Store Manager

      • You must have always worked for small businesses then.

      • +3

        "What's a line manager? "

The bloke (or female bloke/non binary person) in charge of the coke stash.

    • Now that would be truly a hobby.

  • I'm not sure if sleeping is a hobby.

    Based on the definition
"an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure"

It can be. It's pretty good…

FWIW i voted sleeping isn’t a hobby, but i do love a nap, and will jealously guard an hour on a Sunday afternoon for one.
I think the laugh is because the expectation was because you would talk about something a bit structured and more involved - even reading novels or watching movies, things I do as relaxation, but not as a ”hobby” count if they are things you pursue in a bit more organised fashion.
If someone had an idea about more traditional hobbies - stamp collecting, or fishing, or knitting, say - and expected that type of response, then the idea of a sleep being a hoppy is a bit of a chuckle.

I don’t think it was a bad answer, or one that will be marked down or something, just a bit unexpected.
And maybe there are sleep hobbyists, who log their sleep quality, length etc. and aim for a “better” sleep, but because it is something everyone does without much thought, it sounds a bit funny to describe it as a hobby.

  • Maybe I have a new hobby - I’ll see you all at the snooze club later.

    • Are the members know as 'bobos' ?

  • I literally say sleeping when I mention my hobbies.

  • Just makes you sound like you're tired all the time I think

    • I actually am. But after a 10-20 sleep nap I can go all night

      • Your wife must love that!

  • "….without talking about my future career in this company…" then polls everyone with most options dealing with future career at the company.

  • Anyone who has young kids will totally understand your answer!
Also not sure if you have crunch periods or travel involved with your job but being able to grab 20mins while waiting for an email reply or at an airport between flights can be a real superpower!

    • I got a young one, very energetic

  • You might have sleep apnea. Do you snore? Can you record yourself sleeping at night so you can hear if you're snoring/snuffling/gasping for breath at times?

    • I have to ask the Mrs on that one

  • Whether or not it's a hobby is a moot point

The fact that you presented this to your boss tells her that you're a boring person.

    • Probably , not that I am worried that much, small company, not much to go

  • You straight up honest that's good but hobby can change from time to time. I rather have a honest answer than someone tell me stamp or coin collecting as a hobby when they have no idea what to do with free time.

    • I been enjoying sleeping every now and then since I am 15. A nice 30 years hobby lol

  • I think if someone can say their hobby is relaxation is meditating or anything equally calming then sleeping is just as much as a hobby as those. I love sleeping I have really fun dreams!

  • Should have said, my hobby is sleeping, would you like to join?

  • Sorry, but only boring people without actual hobbies would say their hobby is sleeping. Sleeping is a necessity that everyone does. A hobby is supposed to be something you can at the bare minimum have a conversation about because you may not know anything about it, i.e something that requires some knowledge.

If I went on a date and she told me her hobby was sleeping I would think she's boring, lazy or sleep deprived.

  • +1

I would say a hobby is an activity you enjoy doing regularly in your spare time.

    hobby = enjoyable activity
    sleeping is an activity
    OP does it regularly
sleeping is enjoyable to the OP
    sleeping = hobby

    • +1

Transitive law, nice. Although easier to say:

      hobby = enjoyable activity
      enjoyable activity = sleeping

      hobby = sleeping

      • +1

Nice. I'm on night shift & wish I was sleeping.

        • This is more interesting than sleeping that's for sure!
