Things to Do in Rwanda, Kenya, Thailand

For anyone who ended up getting the return business class tickets to Rwanda, any idea on the best things to do in these countries for a good price?

Pretty obvious one but a Safari tour of course. Some fantastic experiences & memories to be had.

If you're feeling very very brave, drive the Africa Rally tour route from Kenya to South Africa.

  • A Rwandan gorilla permit will set you back more than the flights themselves ($1500 USD)…whilst beautiful, you will be priced out on safaris pretty quickly if you are on a tight budget.

    • Damn! I went there only a few years after Gorilla's In The Mist, and it wasn't so expensive.
We just kind of showed up though, with no booking, and they added us on to a tour. So that may help. Just make sure you have US dollars cash. No such thing as booked out in Africa if you have cash.

Why Kenya? From Rwanda, get a bus to Bujumbura, and then the ferry down Lake Tanyanika to Kigoma in Tanzania. Sadly, the old WW1 vintage German MV Liemba is not currently running.
From Kigoma, you can catch the train across Tanzania.

But first visit Gombe Stream National Park, to see the wild chimpanzees, as made famous by Jane Goodall.
Climb Kilimajaro on a 5-day hike. See Serengetti, Ngorrogorro crater.

Then, if you still have time, head north to Kenya. Otherwise, fly from Kilimanjaro International Airport back to Rwanda.

Apparently you can book tours that drive you over to Uganda where the gorilla permits are cheaper, wish I had time to do all that, I got the recent deal return business class flights for $1800 from Melbourne to Bangkok, Nairobi then Kigali, will be spending 1 week in Kenya, 1 week in Rwanda, 2 weeks in Thailand.

      • That sounds really helpful!

Kenya sounds much more affordable for some reason.

1500 USD to hunt gorillas doesn't sound too bad really.

    • Oof, I was thinking, are you seriously bringing up gorilla hunting in a public forum. Lucky I googled gorilla permits 😂

  • Absolutely! Rwanda and Thailand offer incredible experiences at various price points. Here are some suggestions for both countries between December 2023 to May 2024:

    Rwanda:

    1. Gorilla Trekking: Although it's not cheap, it's an unforgettable experience. Booking in advance and opting for offseason months might help with costs.
    2. Nyungwe Forest National Park: Go for chimpanzee tracking and canopy walks, offering a unique wildlife experience.
    3. Lake Kivu: Enjoy the stunning lake views, relax on its beaches, or explore nearby towns.
    4. Kigali Genocide Memorial: Visit to learn about Rwanda's history; entry is free.
    5. Local Markets and Crafts: Discover local crafts and markets for authentic souvenirs.

    Thailand:

    1. Chiang Mai: Explore the temples, enjoy street food, and visit the Night Bazaar for affordable shopping.
    2. Thai Islands: Opt for less touristy islands like Koh Lanta or Koh Tao for budget-friendly beach experiences.
    3. Bangkok: Explore its temples, markets (like Chatuchak Weekend Market), and street food scene for affordable yet delicious meals.
    4. Northern Thailand Trekking: Go trekking around Chiang Mai or Pai for a budget-friendly adventure.
    5. Local Festivals: Experience local festivals like Songkran (Thai New Year) in April, offering cultural immersion at little to no cost.
