  • Man if the Legion Go Z1 extreme version was this price, I would pull the trigger.

    • $1,169 with student discount

      • -1

        That's for the non-extreme version.

        • -2

There is no non-extreme Lenovo Legion Go, they all have Z1 Extreme. This confusion is caused by some retailers indicating the device as "Lenovo Legion Go Extreme". The only difference is SSD size

          • +5

@RobBoss: When the Legion Go first launched the Lenovo website itself had 2 models, one said it had a Z1 Extreme and the other didn't, now the main site just says it has one model.

The current model on the site is the cheaper 1299 one and it says Z1 only, but the 1499 version definitely said Z1 Extreme.

Also I got this from the US site for the more expensive model. AMD Ryzen™ Z1 Extreme Processor (3.30 GHz up to 5.10 GHz)

And this is from the AU site for the model they have available. AMD Ryzen™ Z1 Processor (3.20 GHz up to 4.90 GHz)

            • -3

@nmartin84: Good to know, but in the Australian market, it seems like they all come with the Z1 Extreme processor. Once again, the only difference between JB and Lenovo is SSD size

              • +1

@RobBoss: In Aus, they sell a non extreme version. Source, spoke with Lenovo rep. The one on Lenovo store is the non extreme.

          • @RobBoss: There is no z1 Legion go in most regions, but there is definitely a non-extreme Legion go in aus, and that's the one you're talking about.

The z1 extreme version is 1499 normally and I think is $1369 or something edu price.

    • +11

      Left or right?

    • I'd pull the trigger on the Z1 Extreme from JB at $1300, the Legion Go is worth $200 more than the Asus in my opinion, but not worth $400 more.

  • +1

This is the Rog Ally Extreme.
Just curious, if the non-extreme one was ever available in Australia? I'm shopping for one that's second hand and I want to make sure it's the extreme version.

    • +2

It's not. We get Extreme only.

      • +1

        Lovely. Thank you Mr Dude!

        • +9

A lot of Ally's are suffering from a defect which causes the MicroSD reader to eventually fail. It'll be wise to find a later revision. It can be identified by the first 2 digits of the serial number. R1 to R9 and the latest being RA. Manufactured in Oct-2023.

          • +6

@DASHCAM NOW DUDE: JB replaces ones with faulty sd card with a new one even if you buy second hand as long as you ask for a receipt.

          • @DASHCAM NOW DUDE: Thank you again this is super valuable to know!

          • @DASHCAM NOW DUDE: Got one during last sale and just checked, it's R8. Is it only the sd card that has issue? Are there any other reasons that one should get an RA model?

I don't use the sd card (at least yet) as I upgraded the SSD to 2tb.

            • +2

@Porker: No other reason. In fact, some people say it doesn't even make a difference but we hope newer is better.

  • +1

Still can't believe Lenovo didn't include VRR support. Kind of a must for running games at lower fps. Bigger screen is nice but the tearing is real.

    • They used a phone or phablet screen, so its natively portrait turned 90 degrees, too.

    • +3

I haven't seen anyone complain about tearing on the Legion Go, only lots of people upset they didnt include VRR. It's likely people.are blowing the lack of VVR out of proportion. I have both the ROG and Legion Go.

      • +1

Do you have a preference between the two?

  • -3

I predict the price on this is going to come down like the steam deck to around the $800 mark.

    • +39

Prices on electronics go down over time, good prediction

      • Then a nuke hits, all the factories shut down and the price goes up :P

        (tongue in cheek)

        • +2

No need for nukes. A flood in thailand did it for hdd prices.

        • if a nuke hit the price of a handheld game plaything will be the least of your worries.

  • This or stream deck oled?

    • +1

      Steam Deck.

    • +5

This has better performance especially at 30w, steam deck oled has better battery life and a nicer OS for handheld gaming, screen is obviously oled on steam deck, but this has 120hz and vrr which is pretty nice for handheld gaming where frame rates aren’t exactly stable, steam deck OLED will have no manufacturers warranty since it’s all imported.

      • The OLED does have 90hz at least (which will feel pretty close to 120hz) but no VRR which is a shame.

  • -1

So this is the switch pro, right? Runs all the retro games as well as the current AAA titles. I might just retire my laptop and get a portable monitor with this one.

    • Switch is still a more comfortable experience due to thermals.

But yes, in terms of performance and a more open platform, these devices are the way to go. I still play my switch for switch games, but I don't buy any third party games on the switch platform anymore.

      • I’ve been trying out switch for the past month, it’s a great little device and I definitely love the portability. From time to time, it feels a bit silly to play games that were not developed for switch or not able to load say steam games without paying for it again. Like you said, I think open systems or universal licenses are the way to go.

        • Well, often, those switch games would actually run pretty well. Doom eternal, Nier automata and witcher 3 are great on the switch. Not as great looking as it would on this thing, but it's not that much behind either. And waaaaay more comfortable as it will always run between the 5 to 10w tdp bracket, so it never gets above warm..

It's just that they cost quite a bit more for studios to optimise it for the switch. So you have the switch tax to pay. But hey, no need to buy a brand new device just for it.

    • This is still quite a lot slower than the average gaming laptop around this price, ie 4060 vs 1650ish performance, won’t get the best mileage on current AAA titles

      • Presumably if you play it on a screen this size, the resolution maxes out pretty easily, it wouldn’t be too demanding on the graphics card? I think there should be plenty of room for sweet spots where the graphics are acceptable and the game is still performant.

        • I have one, performance is not good on current gen AAA’s like Alan wake 2 / Baldurs gate 3, playable but not very good experiences, think sub 30 fps dips on all low settings 720P, whereas with a similarly priced laptop you might get 1080p high at 60, the sweet spot for these machines are last gen games and emulation, those run really well

          • @Kazusa: Thanks for the review :) A bit disappointing but guess it is what it is.

    • +2

fifa 24 wont run on linux/steamos. you can install windows on a deck but just something to keep in mind.

  • Noob question: what’s game should we play for this kind of console? I am not a hardcore gamer but sometimes I play DotA so not sure if it’s suitable for me

    • +2

This will run dota fine, but you might get mass reported for playing with a controller xd

      • Sure does 🤣💀

    • +1

Your other option is the Steam Deck, but that's not sold locally. From what I've read, the Steam Deck is a better experience in terms of the software.

  • Strage how this is not available at all jbhifi since launch. I have 4 jbhifi around me and only one has it and only recently like last month it could be collected from one of the 4 around me.

    • Guess they just have low stock

  • I was considering a budget gaming laptop for my kid for a gaming/homework device, but this might be a better option docked to a monitor, keyboard and mouse. No need for high frame rate latest AAA gaming capability. Any thoughts on this usage scenario and trade off's?

    • It'll be okay provided you understand its linitations. I plug mine into a monitor and it plays chug chug compared to on the unit's screen - main difference though is I'm trying to bump up the graphics resolution to match the monitor.

In short, It'll be okay as long as one is okay with medicore large screen graphics (depending on game).

    • If it's a homework device, I wouldn't bother with one of these. Depending on the age of your kid and the type of game they play, the upcoming retroid pocket 4 might be a better choice. Can get them that and then get them a cheaper laptop separately. Even those second hand dell laptop will suffice in that case.

This thing can do it, but it's pretty clunky. Pretty damn cool though when you do have a desk set up for it.

  • Just returned my second Ally Extreme and exchanged it for a Lenovo Legion. The Ally is great but SD card reader issue remains unresolved. There is rumour that devices with serial numbers starting R8 has mitigated the issue, but I did not want to risk it.

    • Whats the time frame jbhifi takes returns? And do they just swap it for a new one?

      • I think it’s six months for items worth more than 1k. After than they will try to fix it first

        • So did they just swap it? Did you just say the sd card slot is playing up and they just simply swapped it?

          • @Jklaro: I went in with 2 SD cards and an adapter. I told them that the SD card reader has malfunctioned. Then I demonstrated the issue by showing them how it only reads with an adapter. I returned 2 ROG Ally, first time was a breeze and second time the guy acted like I’m trying to scam JB out of $1299 or something, ultimately we settled on swapping for a Lenovo Legion Go, which I also returned today because the screen had a big white spot. How lucky

            • @RobBoss: Shit unlucky. With an adapter what do you mean?

            • @RobBoss: Do you mean pluging in a usb hub to show the micro sd works?

  • -8

These seem like an awful waste of money,

The tech isn't there yet, there will be new models every year that make the old ones obsolete.

    • +3

Steam deck still runnin from original hardware.

    • +4

might as well never buy a thing then

      • #forever waiting

    • It is more the software. But they seem to be patching the legion and ally pretty well. Would expect early next year to be in good shape. The first updates were pretty good.

Still I agree, if you can wait, wait. I really want an Odin 2, but the next hardware revision of the product will hopefully be so powerful all Switch and PS3 games will run 100% and possibly upscaled.

This or Steam Deck OLED for 960aud?

    • +3

Where is the SD OLED for 960?

      • +1

I'm in Korea. They're stocked at every Electromart (JB equivalent).

    • This or sneak into Google HQ at 3am and use their super computer?

  • -3

I don't need to play outside my wifi so the backbone one was much better value for me. Currently playing Horizon Zero Dawn on ultra settings locked at 60fps, 8% per hour battery drain, all streamed from my desktop with moonlight/sunshine

  • I think Rog ally is the perfect size, if they would get rid of $99, I’d buy it today.

  • +3

I got it for $1050 from jbhifi from talking to chatting https://pasteboard.co/7nuxvw1baW4y.jpg

    • Is the because you added screen protector and case or did you get it to 1050 first then say i also want screen protector and case?

      • +1

I just initially asked for all 3

  • +2

    Skull N Co case
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006117142566.html

Exposed shoulder buttons, great quality, nice texture, stands on it's own.

  • Did anyone go for the extra warranty thingy? Is there a point to it? Mainly asking for the known SD card issue. Hardly normal let me pay for the difference to upgrade an item with their product cover 3 years later. Wonder if jb has the same thing?
