Very cheap, and a new product (August 2012 from what I can see)

But no reviews I can find… anybody got one? All the stories seem to be in… Spanish?

This is all I could get: http://1hnews.com/philips-fc-8802-an-affordable-low-end-robo…

    • Wait for a few reviews, the smaller inexpensive models of these (not saying this is one) seem to be more so for dust, or animal hair.

So… this can't clean a crime scene for me?

It's not that kind of accessory.

        • You're looking at the $500 model that carries the appropriate acids for dissolving human flesh.

          O God!!! 4chan is here….

It may appear that this robot can only clean hard floor surfaces.

Doesn't change modes like the Roomba

    • Looks about right. According to the document linked above, it's only compatible with wood, laminate and tiled floor surfaces. :-/

Phillips Website, FAQ on a presumably similar model [FC8802/01]:

      Question:
On which floor types can I use the robot vacuum cleaner?

      Answer:
This robot is equipped with features that make it a suitable cleaner to help you clean the floors in your home. The robot is especially suitable for cleaning hard floors, such as wooden, tiled or linoleum floors. It may experience problems cleaning soft floors, such as carpet or rugs. If you use the robot on a carpet or rug, please stay close by the first time to see if the robot can deal with this type of floor.

Note: The robot may experience difficulties cleaning some black floors. The black of the floor may trigger a false drop-off signal that causes the robot to move backwards.

And from the PDF in the comment above yours also states:

      Usability
      • Floor types: Wood, laminate and tiles
      • Special features: Stairs detector

  • It's round, how will it clean corner?

    • the little brushes sweep into the corner of the room (most robo-vacs have them and they work well).

    • all the robot vacs I've seen are round, they have little flexible brushes on arms that get into corners. It works well - well my Roomba does.

    • All robot vacuum cleaners are round.
Only exception is LG, who have releases square robovacs only a few months ago.
But those are not available outside Korea.

  • I'd grab one of these if we did'nt have two big shag rugs. Pretty sure that would stuff it.

Alternative is a Neato, which has magnetic strips you can put around objects to block them, but its a cool 600 bucks!!!

    • I've got two rugs as well. Would the vacuum cleaner think that it is an object and avoid it, or would it not see it and try go over it and get stuck?

Command link severed. Default setting. Crush. Kill. Destroy …

    • KK&D, wasn't a bad game when you got sick of C&C back in the good ol' days!

      • Nah, it's a Simpsons quote mate :) but yeah I remember that game.

        • +4

Sorry to show my age, but it's actually a quote from Lost In Space, from an episode called "Revolt Of The Androids" (March 1967). The plot was: Verda the android returns, pursued by an alien superman "IDAK" (Instant Destroyer and Killer) sent to bring her back or destroy her. When the Robinsons win over the superman's sympathies, the CDS replicator machine simply creates another android, stronger and totally devoted to destruction. ["Crush, Kill, Destroy!"]. There have been homages and references to this piece of pop-culture in a few shows since, including The Simpsons. I remember yelling it while running around the playground as a kid. Sorry, this is the best I could find on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXWNepBzs2A

      • KKnD wasnt really a good game, imho :( Shame.

    • Sorry was going for +.

In the market for a robot vacuum currently.
Decided on LG Roboking. Went to HN and was able to negotiate the prices, but was out of stock and had to be ordered in. So I left.

It seems what happened was for good.

On the top this seems to be a good deal.

    • Almost half the height of the popular LG models, which stand at 90 cm.
    • $199 as compared to atleast $600+ for LG/iRobot
    • 1.3 KG as compared to 3.2 KG for LG

    Negatives

    • dust container is half capacity at 02.L vs 0.4L for LG
    • No return to base
    • No intelligent mapping
Needs a bit more research. Thanks OP

90cm is far too tall, my maid is almost that tall.

      • +5

plus you can return her to base when shes worn out :)

    • we have a roboking, bought one for the in laws for xmas too, fantastic device. keeps the dirt of 3 kids (2,5 and 6) to a minimum (when they come in and out of the house all day on weekends) and has no issues going from tiles to carpet (and in the inlaws case hardwood to plush pile). can handle rugs with no issue and navigating chairs etc.

Seems to need a lot of assistance when cleaning.

    • Haha it gets stuck on the rug. that would be very annoying to have keep helping it. Certainly means you can't set it before you leave the house.

    • yeah, that's way too much assistance - might as well do the job yourself if you have to babysit the thing.

  • So, did anyone buy it ?

  • Tempted at that price. Assume Target doesn't do returns if not satisfied ?
    Can't tell from this - http://www.target.com.au/html/refund/revamped_refund.htm

I bought one. Worked for about 10 minutes then one of the rotating brushes stopped rotating freely.
Took it back to Target. Forgot the receipt at home. The girl said she couldn't return it. Then she saw the word robot on the box and thought it was the coolest thing ever. She then looked it up on the computer and exchanged it. Weird.

Anyway, I must say it is absolutely brilliant. We were shocked at how much dust and hairs were on our floors. It works really well. I am quite surprised. All our floors are timber and we have no rugs. We had a bunch of kids over who trashed our place. Crushed popcorn everywhere. It got everything. But we manly bought it to remove dust and hair and it does this perfectly. Every day. My wife was gobsmacked. She thinks its amazing. Bye bye miele vacuum.
The true test is to walk bare foot on the floors. It passes better than with me sweeping and vacuuming. It is much quieter than I thought too. Sounds like a typical ink jet printer.
I thoroughly recommend it. Especially for the price.
Only potential issue is that I am worried it will keep breaking. It does have a 2 year warranty, which is plenty. Don't know how much of a hassle it will be to get it fixed if it breaks. Hopefully it lasts the 2 years……Target in Melbourne city had heaps of them.
