Eh, the original wasn't that good. Gene Wilder absolutely nailed it and carried the entire movie, but the rest of it was pretty meh.
Besides, the new one is a prequel and isn't meant to be the same thing.

I would agree with this the first time I saw this remake, but since watching it again a few times (kids), it really does fit together well as a remake and I enjoyed it.

obviously the original is very hard to beat like most older movies they actually focused on things like good acting and story telling opposed to current movies which focus on anything but more often then not
Don't really care as long as they don't release it with the same title (a pain in the arse when searching for Ghostbusters or Karate Kid related stuff, for example).
Although if I think about it, it highlights the issue with insanely lengthy copyright terms that keep the golden geese under the ownership of a small group of wealthy entities, allowing them to exclusively control and milk the same old IP six decades after the book was written and half a century after the original movie was made. On the other hand, maybe things like the 4K restoration of the original movie wouldn't exist without enough of a profit motive. I dunno.

Funny story there, actually. Roald Dahl famously hated the Gene Wilder version, and the 2005 "miserable Johnny Depp" version was actually closer to what he was aiming for in the book, according to his wife.

There is a magic about the original movie that will never be replicated or surpassed.
