TRS Sony A7cii Bringing The Item Back

Hello Bargainers.

I am going overseas in a few weeks and thinking of buying a Sony A7Cii.

From what I understand, I can claim the GST back under the tourist refund scheme and bring it back with me as long as I declare it on the incoming passenger card.

We are a family 2 adults + 2 kids and have a combined duty free limit of $2700.

But the camera is slightly over the limit at 2899.

From what I read, when you bring the item back (4 weeks later), it will be considered as a used item and won't be considered as having the same value as a brand new camera.

Does anyone know how they calculate the depreciation - or if I will have to pay back the full refund ?

I don't mind having to pay it back, just don't want to spend time on the TRS queue and then with customs if I have to pay it back anyway.

TIA.

If you are honest…then you will pay it back anyhow. In which case don't bother.

Otherwise, only if they catch you on return + a fine for trying to cheat.

  • 2899 - 263.54 = $2,635.46

    • So the value is exclusive of gst, and I will be under the limit thanks

      • yes but make sure you are not bringing any new goods obtained overseas as you will lose all your duty-free concessions.

The value upon return would be based on the value as a "used" camera so would likely be under the limit anyway.

    • No it won't. It's a "value" they deem it to be.

  • you shoudln't need to be sneaky. The duty free limit is 900 per person, + 450 per kid. You have a 2700 limit, and the camera is 2899 inc GST, so the ex GST price is ~2635 - and that is under the magic $2700 no duty limit. Have a good trip.

    • Nice good to know, thanks.

  • FWIW, I have never been questioned about any device I claimed TRS on - they are not looking for the person who buys a laptop or a camera and brings it back, it is the people doing it to 5 laptops and 5 cameras and 12 watches ….. etc.
