Cheers for linking the B22 version, thoughtful and great post.

My experience with these has been that they're quality light bulbs. They last way longer than the tuya ones from aliexpress and I haven't had mine die on me for 3+ years now. They also stay connected without many dropouts. I know that's just expected these days, but there's a lot of cheap trash out there for light bulbs these days

    • +1

Agree, i have about 10 Kasa/Tapo bulbs for almost 4 years. All used every day. None have died. Only drop out when the internet goes out.

    • I have 6 kasa bulbs, and 1 bulbs wifi function broke less than 2 years, the other 5 are fine.

    • +1

I have 5 yeelight bulbs/strips for the last 5 years and none have died, even though daily use.

      • I got the yeelight light strip around the same time as well. Still going strong despite being used daily!

I'm on the fence with these bulbs. I got some of these TP-Link bulbs as part of some freebie and decided to use them as just regular lights (i.e. not use any smart features). They were great until they disconnected from the Wi-Fi for whatever reason, which seemed to happen every couple of months. While this shouldn't have mattered in my case, the stupid light would flash 5 times when you turn them on to let you know it's disconnected. It forced you to download the app to connect them to Wi-Fi again to stop the flashing. Ended up replacing them with the regular LED bulbs. I've got Philips bulbs which don't appear to have this issue.

Hah. Love how this is the opposite of my experience. Buyer beware I guess.

  • Picked one of these up for $12.80 the other day. Rather happy with the UI of the TAPO app and output. Hoping they have some longevity.

  • Anyone using Home Assistant and Local Tuya with these?

    • I'm not but I vaguely remember reading somewhere there was a newer version of these which didn't play as nicely? Not sure if these are the newer or older ones or if that advice is defunct!

    • Actually, does it even use Tuya?

      • +1

Tapo and Tuya are 2 different ecosystems. Home Assistant should be able to integrate them all which I plan to try this holiday.

        • Yeah, for a brief moment I thought it was Tuya. Trying to move everything across to Local Tuya where I can, so I'll give these a pass.

  • Bought 2 to compare with Kogan Smart Bulbs which I got for cheap back then

    • how did you go with kogan bulbs?

i have quite poor experience with them. they keep disconnecting from my wifi even though i am using mesh system with 3 satellites.

and the one that keep dropping off is the closest from one of the satellites. lol.

      • Don't think I have connection issues with them. Reliable connection should be essential for these smart things. As it's very annoying. Maybe that one of yours is faulty. Or possibly you have too many devices connected at once.

If it get disconnected again and again, I'd just replace and see any difference.

My complaint would be the brightness and RGB, but at the price I can't complain much

  • Cheers OP, grabbed 2 to replace the bedroom lamp bulbs :)

  • Already have had two of these for nearly 3 years and they're still going strong

  • Bought an E27 for $10 Black Friday. B22 might be this lowest price though.

Works with Amazon Alexa and google. Of course the price-gouging Apple eco system is left out. If tp-link were to pay Apple for HomeKit integration they would cost double the price for literally no reason other than put money in Tim apple's fat pockets

  • Do they keep disconnecting and flashing like the mirabella bulbs?

    • +1

I have an older TP Link Kasa. They only reset when my kid keeps switching it on and off about 5 times. That's the way to reset the lamp, then you can pair it again. Probably not the best idea.

      • How often do your kids play like that lol

Will these work on 5ghz wifi or only 2.4?
Have some other globes that will only work on 2.4 and for some reason won't work when wifi is set to be both bandwidths

    • Want to know this too !!

    • +2

To my knowledge none of TP-Link's smart bulbs work on 5GHz, they only work on 2.4GHz band. In my experience it's pretty rare for manufacturers to support 5GHz for smart home devices.

Indeed, I just looked up the tech specs and it is 2.4Ghz only:
      https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/smart-bulb/tapo-l…

I used to complain about this years ago but in retrospect it makes a lot of sense, 5GHz does not work well over longer distances or through walls, and you don't need a lot of speed for most smart home devices, so 2.4GHz is the perfect band for this use case.

  • E27 OOS

  • B22 OOS as well

  • gone

  • Can I use these without having to connect to a remote server?

    • That is what I want to know as well!

  • JB Hi-Fi have these for $13 + delivery for those that missed out. Good to use those SnackBack $5 vouchers.

They have the 2 packs in stock for $24. Says temporarily out of stock but you can still order for both B22 and E27

    • thanks… did this and ordered. Says Jan 2024 delivery. Will wait and see… not needing this urgently.

  • how do these compare to wiz lights? I got wiz and it's been a bit crap with the software, thinking if I should switch over to something else

    • +2

I dont know if you use google home for example, but I've always found that, (pick any 'smart' product), while the original software might be appalling for a vast number of reasons, so long as it can be integrated into the google system, google will replace said items' software. So in this case, so long as your wiz lights are fine and their software is running under google/alexa, it becomee irrelevant that the wiz lights original software was/is ass. Sorry if this is obvious!

I have a samsung air purifier that goes through smart things. They implemented the bare minimum (on and off) for the device to be google home compatible. A lot of companies do this. They implement the bare minimum (you can see in dev docs) so that they get the marketing but you still HAVE to use their software.

  • +1

How do these go with Home Assistant integration? Do they have to be run through a cloud?

  • You can still order the two packs for $24 but who knows how long they will take to arrive.

  • Anyone have links to nice table lamps for E27 bulbs?
