Amazon: Can You Return an Item That Has Been Opened?

Hi guys,

I bought a door lock and have opened the package. Upon trying to install it, we figured out it wasn't compatible.

I had a look at the Amazon returns policy and am unsure if it can be returned https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/help/customer/display.html?node… - there's a line that says "Packaging must be unopened and seals intact (where applicable)".

Can anyone confirm either way if it's possible?

what did amazon say when you called them?

    • I didn't know you could call them! I'd figure this is a common thing that I must have missed the answer somewhere.

      • -1

        yes, you can call them.

          Can't even find the number?

@kerfuffle: Thank you for the tip. I was able to return the item.

@dantes: Thanks for the update. Something to file for future reference.

Well youAmazon answered your own question.
Amazon is pretty good/lenient with returns so doesn't hurt ringing customer support.

Yeah, but most retailers would accept opened packages item not fit for purpose. My fault for not reading the fine print.

Lol, you ordering something that isn't compatible with your door isn't "not fit for purpose".

        • Bad wording - not fitting for my purpose. Have you ever bought something that didn't fit you?

@dantes: So a change of mind refund then, on an opened item.
You are lucky Amazon does sometimes allow such things, even on an opened item as you discovered, but it shouldn't be considered a 'given' that a retailer would do that.

            • @SBOB: Agreed, bought tonnes of things from Amazon, but never had to return anything. At least I'm aware of the returns policy. Again, badly written comment on my part - "most" should be "some". It just adds to my appreciation of Bunning's returns policy which I take for granted.

          • @dantes: Yeah, as it is my stuff up, I cop it.

            • @brendanm: Some things are unforseen. When you buy a shirt which is marked M, but is too small, do you just keep it and not bother returning?

I didn't realise my door was not a solid core door. It's the perils of online shopping, but I guess Amazon understands it. From other comments below, it seems you can return opened items - it's just not clear so checking with customer service is the lesson I have learnt.

@dantes: I buy shirts at the shirt store and try them on.

Should have taken out your current lockset and had a look.

hopefully its just an internal door.

I've returned opened stuff before though the packaging was in good condition.

  • Normal Australian consumer law applies.

And how exactly does it apply to this situation when OP bought an item that is incompatible with the door?

      • -1

Return it and if they say tough (profanity) you're (profanity) out of luck.

      WTF?

        Wednesday, Thursday, Friday?

  • +1

Yes you can return opened items.

    • Yeah, it's just not clear in the returns policy - probably to discourage it.

I'd return it anyway. Amazon will probably throw it in the trash in any case.

    • I got the approval and free return authorised. I believe they sometimes re-sell as "used but new" in the "other buying options".

      • Amazon resold its own return items that has been opened under Amazon Warehouse. For third party sellers with FBA, items get to unfulfilled status and it then depends on the sellers to either dispose it or return back to them.

  • I recently bought a 2 pack of screen savers, and found that it didn’t go edge to edge. Contacted Amazon, and they refunded me the full amount and told me to dispose of the unused one

  • I returned an opened and tested PlayStation VR2 headset that made me nauseous.
I just requested a return online, it got approved, I got a label, went to the post office, 4 days later refund was on my credit card.
The VR2 came with a game code to get a game from the PS store. I had used the code and was worried that may be an issue, but it was not.

    • Amazon doesn’t check, but that’s a little unethical. It’s generally universally understood that if you use any digital consumables, you can’t return it for change of mind.

      • Amazon resell it used and just list it as: Missing shrink-wrap, activation codes for bonus online content may be missing or expired.
