Upgrade from RPI 4

Looking at upgrading from a RPI 4 2GB with external Samsung SSD. I currently use it as a home server and I think it’s beginning to get to it’s limits as I run the following and have only 0.34 Gb RAM free.

Homebridge with 20 plug ins
Phoscon Zigbee Controller
Unifi controller
Docker with 3 containers - Portainer, Watch tower and Scrypted (which brings 2 cameras into HomeKit so may be fairly ram/cpu intensive)
Ctrld encrypted dns server.

Looking for something with a similar or sff that has low power consumption also as it will run 24/7. Would I be better upgrade to a 4/8 Gb RPI or going for something different?

Appreciate any advice.

You're next step would best be a SFF PC - plenty of deals on HP and Dell ex-office PCs that are like $300 which will give a heap more headroom.

Plenty of historical deals that have good value e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/810361

  • Get a 8GB RPi5.

  • I'm using my KAMRUI Mini PC and that has basically replaced my very old and laggy Pi3 server, which has been running continously for about 5 or 6 years.

It's not fanless though, unlike a Raspberry Pi, but it is very power efficient and fan noise is not really audible.

    • Nice, can you run Linux on these?

      • Of course, they are just Intel x86 computers.

        • Thanks mate, still learning :-)

After running a few ARM based SBC, I'm now going back to low powered x86 for Linux computing because of amount of support. Search "Lenovo Tiny" "Dell Mini" or "HP Micro" on eBay (when there's a coupon code for refurbished items) for some ex-corporate mini PCs that are quiet and don't use much more power than a RPi. There are some fanless mini PC as well (search on AliExpress) — find one with 6W Intel N100/N200 and they are much faster than your RPi 4 as well.

  • Something like this? It's fanless and comes with all kinds of ports you may need.

If you can do with only 4GB of RAM you can even buy a cheap second hand one: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/266196477511 (the CPU in this is probably slower than the RP4).
