  • Great hedge trimmer, powerful unit

  • Excellent value here.

  • Got one, thanks

  • Are these good for commercial use?

Might be a good deal just to get a battery so I can test the powerhead I got off a council pickup pile

    • EGO have a different 'commercial' range which aren't interchangeable at all.

      • Not true. Same batteries. Some of the commercial gear is designed to be used with a backpack though (has no battery bracket, just a socket for the backpack cable), but the domestic version backpack fits this attachment too. There are some huge batteries available too, which obviously wouldn’t suit and may not fit some skins.

If you own any of the Ego backpacks, and the batteries, you are set.

        • Oh, interesting. All the commercial backpack batteries I've seen had such different connectors and formats that I thought they were completely different.

          • +1

@damion: Yeah, well, they kind of sort of are different…Ego doesn't really communicate this well. The batteries are all the same format. You do need a backpack for many of the commercial tools though, but the domestic backpack works fine.

I wasn't entirely sure on this until I recently I picked up the commercial chainsaw aimed at arborists - it is designed to be light and agile and so has no battery slot, but instead has a plug socket designed to work with the belt attachment it comes with (to attach to your climbing harness - if you're trained for that). I eschewed the belt mount for my standard battery backpack that I picked up years ago, and it works fine with the saw for walk about use taking down lower branches (there's a whole other argument about using arborist saws for general use, but we won't go into that).

I see a few of the commercial tools are absent a battery mount, and have the same design as the chainsaw. The standard BHX1001 battery backpack will connect to these (you just don't need the dummy battery it comes with). I had one of these before the commercial range even reached our shores…I like it for long sessions with the line or hedge trimmers. Likewise, the commercial battery backpack will work with general Ego tools provided you have the dummy battery to attach to the tools.

Some of the commercial range has the battery slot, like the STX4500 line trimmer, so you just throw the normal battery onto them. If you buy a skin without a battery slot (ie…just the plug socket), you are gonna need a backpack with cable to use it.

Ego should probably make this clearer. I guess it depends on the tool though, so can quickly become confusing!

Any chance of a decent line trimmer deal?

  • Anyone used one ? 7kg vs around 3kg for the Makita brushless 18v. Heavy to use ?

    • +1

I do find it a little hard on the shoulders for long periods. I have a backpack with battery adaptor though, and this makes all the ego tools much lighter (you don’t notice the battery on your back, and can run a larger size).

  • Got one to complete my ego collection. Thanks

      Have you got anymore?

      • "Please be aware we only have limited stocks on this kit (35 kits left) and once they are gone, we cannot source more!"

        • @adinico Yes I saw that. They might end up finding more from some of their stores. You don't know if you don't ask.

  • Darn. Too busy with kids!

I got one of these units last week (skin, not battery and charger as I already had 2 x 2.5aH batteries) I cut the hedge (not dense), probably using it for around 30 minutes and it used 2 lights of one battery. Very impressed with it.

@TradeTools Please put the pole hedger (multitool) on next.

  • It seems the link has been taken down as it is out of stock.

Does this deal have a bonus battery included?

    Cheers!
