[Presale] Kogan 40" Curved Ultrawide WUHD USB-C Monitor (5120 x 2160) $689 ($669 with First) + $39 Shipping @ Kogan

200

Kogan 40inch 5k2k for $699 or $669 with Kogan First free trial. $39 shipping for me. Presale to ship early February.

The specs are pretty bare bones and even after contacting them twice I can't get a spec for the power output on the USB-C. Only 60hz refresh so not great for gamers. Should be a LG panel as they're the only ones making this size.

Closest deal I can find on this size is $1600+ for a Lenovo at their Education store shipping in 8+ weeks. Everything else is closer to $2k or over.

Ordered one for myself, if its no good I'll return it.

great office monitor with high PPI

The quality may be a big question mark

    • +1

Agree completely. But there is definitely some value here too.

They were quite good with returns for my Ultrawide 34". Sent it back 3 of them for dead pixels before I got a good one. Was a hassle to go through returns process but the final one has been going strong for 4 years now.

        • What were their requirements as far as dead pixels for a return?

          • +1

@newtsy: At the time it covered even a single pixel, not sure what the policy is now.

    • Expect little to no colour calibration unless stated.

  • Refresh Rate 60Hz: not for gaming

  • +6

I have the Lenovo version of this. It is game-changing. I've previously had a Dell 38", and before that 3 x 24" screens. I've been a multimonitor user since Windows 2000, but no going back once you've had a single screen like this that allows you to focus on a single app for focussed productivity, or divide it into 2-3 zones when multitasking. (Hint - grab the Microsoft Powertoys as it allows you to define your own splitscreen zones).

    • I was close to pulling the trigger on the Lenovo. But I can't justify the extra spend if this is the same panel. Glad you like it though, hoping this isn't to poor a copy.

    • And worth the upgrade from the 38" to the the 40" ?

      • +1

Yep. The dell 38" was 3840x1600 iirc. Big leap up from that to 5K2K. Much more comfortable to split the screen into 2+ zones on the 40" 5k2k screen. I often split it into 3 columns (2 narrow, 1 wide) which really didn't work so well on the 38" due to the lower resolution.

        • I was considering a 38" for the higher refresh available to, I don't game enough anymore though and those sweet pixels are to much to resist.

    • +1

I use that 38" Dell one (3 something x 1600) - would you please put a few words to compare it to this one ! This kogan one is twice cheaper than I bought Dell 2 years ago

      • +2

I'm in the same boat, I would love the extra resolution but I'm worried it would be a massive quality drop :/

  • How are kogan with change of mind returns?

  • +2

hmm, no mentioning if it supports that resolution and frequency on all inputs

    • +3

Fortunately it's quite easy to figure out. Since it has 10bit colour depth you'll get 5120x2160@30Hz via the HDMI 2.0 port and 5120x2160@60Hz via the DisplayPort 1.4 and USB-C (assuming DP 1.4) ports.

  • even though its not for gaming I still would never go back to 60hz it feels slow as hell even for general PC use.

    • +3

I have 144Hz, if I switch back to 60 I can't tell the difference unless I move the mouse or windows around real quick.

  • +1

4k is pretty good for this price!

  • +1

I had a look and couldn't see anything in the specs about a built in KVM. Can anyone confirm there is no KVM in here?

    • +1

I have been trying for a week to get some more specs out of support. I would err on the side of caution and say no. Happy to update when it arrives in a month though.

    • It has 4 USB 2.0 ports that are connected to the PC via the USB Type B port. It would seem the USB-C port is only for power/video/audio.

Here's an OEM model of the same monitor with more information and pictures.

The alibaba listing seems really off and inaccurate. Kogan one is IPS 60hz, alibaba says VA 144hz and also 75hz. Don't think the alibaba listing is accurate.

        • I said OEM for a reason. The Alibaba listing shows you the different configurations that's available if you order in bulk from the manufacturer (as with all Alibaba listings). So you can get it with an IPS or VA panel with 60Hz, 75Hz or 144Hz refresh rate.

Obviously Kogan chose the IPS 60Hz panel.

      • Here it says that it supports PBP, but does it support PIP though?

        • Depends if Kogan opted for that. The listing is just showing one of the many options the manufacturer offers for the monitor.

        • The Kogan 49" which appears closely related to the 40" does mention PBP/PIP in the manual. No guarantee that the 40" has it though.

  • Would this work ok with a MacBook m1?

    • m1 macbooks support one external display with a resolution up to 6k, so you should be fine.

  • So the big question: is it worth risking buying something from kogan (with their allegedly horrendous warranty and non-adherence to ACL) to save 60% versus the next cheapest equivalent of this monitor (lenovo or LG) ?

    • +1

I'll get back to you in 4 weeks. If the panels good and the USB-C outputs 65w then I reckon its worth it.

  • +1

FYI, 10% off for Kogan First Member bring the price to $629 + delivery.

Received the screen today but noticed the mounting point isn't completely flat, with 2 ridges. I'll be trying to attach this tonight to a monitor arm, so hopefully doesn't need any vesa adaptor.

    • +1

and the standard vesa mount does not fit, like the one found on NB H100. bloody hell. have to find a different mount or hopefully Kogan offer something like on their other screens.

      • Do you have a photo of the mounting point by chance? Did you end up finding a work around?

    • +5

      @mynamewahhhwahh Mine also arrived yesterday.

I got mine on my mount, it was a mission, as you said the recessed mount point was a pain, but my bracket squeezed in. I had to screw the plate on while attached to the arm instead of screwing it off then sliding the plate onto the arm.

The stand is cheap but has enough adjustment to be useable if you don't have an arm.

The panel is great on mine, no dead pixels, running at 75hz.

      USB-PD works well, DP-ALT Mode works great, again 5120 @ 75hz. Even 10bit @ 60hz on an AMD laptop.

@zhutcho Display switches the USB hub from the USB-B to the USB-C when the input changes, I guess this is all the kvm I need. Had an issue with USB-B to a USB3.0 but works fine to a USB2.0.

  • @mynamewahhhwahh does it have USB-C PD or a KVM?

  • +1

Setting up the colour settings on this screen is a bloody pain coming from a gigabyte screen.

Speakers are crap but fine for watching basic videos as expected.

Menus are awful, but it does have adjustments for the usual suspects.

Has functions for PbP and PiP.

    Also has Freesync and HDR.

Pretty happy at this point. Would I like the newly announced Dell U4025QW with 120hz, sure I would. But by the time it gets here I'll want the next….

    • Hey Newtsy, thanks so much for posting all these details. I just have a question about PbP. Can you please let me know how this works? I.e. if I connect two display sources, do they both take up half the screen, i.e. 2560x2160 resolution?

      And how about PiP?

  • @newtsy @mynamewahhhwahh do either of you have a photo of the mounting point on the monitor? Trying to assess whether Ergotron HX mount will have any issues :/

    • +1

      @ADCC91 I'm using this mount:

      https://amzn.asia/d/1b6jSEs

      If that helps.

    • +4

The issue is that the recessed cutout is smaller than what appears to be most standard VESA mounts so they just won't fit in to begin with (ridges mentioned above are another issue). I've tried multiple different monitor arms (including a NB H100) with plates and cross arms and none of them fit (but fit other recessed monitors). The screw holes actually line up with 100x100 VESA mounts.

I'm not even sure getting some kind of standard VESA spacing bracket would solve the problem as it is unlikely to fit in.

EDIT: I measured two of my plates, 11.5cm x 11.5cm. The recessed space is 11.4mm x 11.4cm, so if your plate is 11.4cm it should fit okay.

      • +2

This explains the problem well, I think I'll get an angle grinder out to trim my NB100 mount, how hard can it be :D

      • Thank you all for the responses, much appreciated.

Price has dropped back down to the presale price of $699, from the $799 it was when first available.
