South Korea Tips for Accommodation/Hair and Skin Treatment Clinics

Hi all, I have read so many forum posts about South Korea and Japan and it’s so good to see all the travel happening in 2023.

I am travelling to both South Korea in Japan and April and having a hard time deciding on accommodation. Looking for Seoul/Tokyo/Osaka mainly. Budget about $250 pn.

Online reviews seem to be a very mixed so figured I should come to our trusty forum. Also, would love to hear if preference is more towards Air BnB’s (whether separate room or entire apartment) or hotels.

Also wanted to know if people have experienced any Hair/skin treatments in Seoul and if there are recommended places.

  • Seoul - We just stayed at Ninetree Dongdaemun which was nice but the location for us was a bit meh.

Tokyo - depends what area you want. Can recommend Oakwood Apartments Azabu but you might find the number of local train lines limiting. Also stayed at One Tokyo - utter waste of money tbh.

Personally I wouldn't stay in Osaka. I would stay in Kyoto and get the train if I had to. If staying in Kyoto, try staying close to Kyoto station for ease of travel.

    • Personally I wouldn't stay in Osaka. I would stay in Kyoto

Is this due to cost? Or atmosphere?

      • I think it's just personal preference. If it's your first time then stay in Kyoto, look for hotels in the Kyoto station area. For me as I've been to most of Kyoto's attractions, I prefer to stay in Osaka as my base, cheaper accommodation and easier for shopping.

        • Agreed and i think it depends what you're going for. Culture and tourism -Kyoto. Shopping - Osaka

        • Have you found any good accommodations in Osaka that you recommend?

    • Thats a good tip about kyoto! Thank you. Dongdaemun why was it meh? Would you say Myeongdong is better or its toooo touristy?

      • It was our first time to Korea so Im positive others will have better advice but I found it too far away from the central area. Sure, there was plenty of mall shopping and food but the area seemed to be the Uzbek, Russian area (and so the food tends to be more northern/central Asian). There's no local markets. It was right next to the DDP if you're looking on a map.

As we found the subway in Seoul to not be as reliable as Tokyo, getting to tourist places was actually easier and cheaper by taxi.

If I went back, I would try and stay in Myeongdong area. Positive it would be more expensive but everything would be at my door.

    In tokyo/osaka I'd recommend airbnb.

It gives you more of a feel of the country/culture

I usually book either apartments or houses (i travel with my 3 kids so i find airbnb is more practical- hotel family rooms are usually more expensive than airbnb)

Apartments are relatively cheap ~$100 a night.

I'm heading to Korea in Feb and am also looking at airbnb for that

Travelling to Japan recently as a couple, I went with hotels over airbnbs. Had a brief look at airbnbs in some areas but overall they looked less nice than hotels at the same price point, we didn’t need the extra facilities like kitchens, and I didn’t want to navigate the extra airbnb rules there.

Tokyo - stayed in the Akasaka area about a 5-10 min walk from a few train stations - I thought it was a good balance between price and centrality (compared to more expensive areas like Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ginza).

Kyoto - stayed near Nishiki market rather than near Kyoto station. Good food and shopping nearby. Buses got us to the main cultural/tourist locations. A different train line nearby (not from Kyoto station) got us to Osaka pretty easily too.

Osaka - stayed in Shinsaibashi. Our priority was food so wanted to stay near Dotonbori/Namba, but Shinsaibashi was close enough / walkable and cheaper.

Seoul - stayed in Myeongdong. Pretty thriving area for food and shopping, and easy transport to a lot of the main tourist locations.

Good tips. We will be travelling as a couple as well and food will definitely be a higher priority for us too.

I stayed in Airbnb once and never again. Although it was more spacious than hotels, I was so anxious all the time worrying about getting complaints from neighbours or not doing the garbage/clean up right. With hotels, I don't need to worry about the cleaning and garbage after a long day out, also honestly feel safer especially when there's an emergency (earthquake), you know the hotel will help.

  • We stayed at Omiya in the tokyo area. It is a major transportation hub so it is a shinkansen station. Stayed at Super Hotel Premier Saitama Omiyaeki Higashiguchi. 4 mins walk from station and in that 4 mins walk, you pass 100 restaurants. Very central, gives you a great feel of Japan. Super clean and great choose your pillow selection. Free make your own cocktails between 5-7pm. Affordable hotel. Highly recommend.
