  • This bargain led me to browsing the site and to Focal Grande Utopia EM for $87,100. Save $247,900.

I might not be buying that, but I have owned some JM Lab (Focal-made) speakers since 1997 and they're wonderful.

    • +1

That they can discount the price by more than 2/3, demonstrates what monstrous margins high-end audio equipment manufacturers employ.

  • This is an outstanding deal.

  • I know almost nothing about audio systems - Would this be an better alternative to a tv sound bar, or does it not work like that?

    • +1

This isnt an alternative to a soundbar, it'd be much much better but would also require an amplifier, a sub woofer and at least 4 other speakers.

    • Surround Sound is made up of several channels. If you ever look at the back of bluray/DVD covers, or click on the audio options of a movie/show your streaming, you might see notations like 5.1, or 7.1, or 7.1.4. These numbers represent the amount of channel's a video's audio is mastered in. 5.1 means left speaker, right speaker, centre speaker, surround left speaker, surround right speaker (all of these make the initial 5), and one subwoofer (making the 1 in a 5.1 setup).

Modern soundbars try to cram all these channels into a single piece of hardware, but it has no chance of sounding anywhere near as good as a proper speaker setup. The imaging will be completely inaccurate.

If you have the option, always try to go for a speaker setup rather than a soundbar.

      • What about 5 soundbars?

        • +1

In that case, the whole is less than the sum of its parts, to misquote Aristotle.

  • Can this be used as a left right channels, if you buy two?

    • +1

Yes, but why would you want to do that? They're like any other passive speaker connect them to any channel on your amplifier / receiver, and you will have sound - but they're designed to be a center channel speaker. If you want a 2.0 setup just buy a pair of passive bookshelves.

    • +1

2 x $600 will cost the same as the 906 bookshelf pair of speakers ($1200) at the same site. So no cost benefit. There is also concern that having a woofer either side of the tweeter, one may encounter decreased off axis imaging i.e. what is good for a centre with pin point accuracy, may be not ideal as left and right channels. So why run the risk when there is an alternative? Buy the 906's. They are good speakers and a good price at 50% off.

  • I thought this was $500 a few days ago?

    • +1

No, that's the Chora version. This is the Aria, which is a tier higher.
