  • Is the rose gold special edition?
    The black is $40

Not being a pen officianado(sp?) I'm struggling to see the difference with the premium version

        • The Classic is what you buy for yourself. This Premium version with the gift box is what you’re supposed to buy for the GF/missus.

The 849 pulls out all the stops! The new version of this iconic Caran d’Ache’s pen is superbly elegant, distinguished like a fine wine, lively as a birthday party, yet always refined and gentle. Its name: 849 Brut Rosé. Its secret: a heady pink gold colour that sparkles with the pleasure of writing. Exhilarating like a gala evening, delightfully chic and deliciously trendy, this is the 849 at its most glamorous. Sparkling with femininity, this new version of the famous pen from Caran d’Ache has so much to love. Firstly its colour. A pink that’s as precious as gold. Both dazzling and dignified, the bronzed pink captivates the world of fashion. The 849 Brut Rosé stands out with its iconic shape that sits so comfortably in the hand, and also with its presentation, the famous “so slim, so glam” slimpack that flatters its graceful silhouette. Ideal as a gift, it is a must-have accessory for women who aim for elegance in every detail. The 849 Brut Rosé embodies the slightly flirty femininity of the truly confident woman, combining a light dusting of glitter with discreet refinement.

  • What is so special about these pens to warrant the price premium on top of a normal ball point pen?
Aside from the aesthetics of course.

It's a psychological thing. When you're at a corporate event and lend someone your pen, they feel a strong, weighty, high quality pen which will subconsciously make them want to steal it.

      • It makes them sign an offer they can't refuse too!

    • Gold plated. It’s jewellery for men. Though this design is ugly imo.

Thanks Op, grabbed one. Playing with Private GPT tonight, it had this to say:

Caran d'Ache is a renowned Swiss manufacturer of high-quality writing instruments, particularly known for their fountain pens. Founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1904 by Auberon Herbert and Edmond Dubois, the company has been producing fine writing instruments for over a century. Caran d'Ache is part of the Faber-Castell group since 1996.
Caran d'Ache pens are famous for their elegant designs, superior craftsmanship, and exceptional writing performance. They offer a wide range of pen models catering to various preferences and needs, including fountain pens, ballpoint pens, rollerball pens, and mechanical pencils. Some popular Caran d'Ache pen collections include the 849, Ecoline, and Heraldic Collection.
The 849 is a classic fountain pen with a piston filler mechanism, offering a large ink capacity and a wide range of nib sizes. The Ecoline collection features disposable ballpoint pens with a unique triangular design for a comfortable grip. The Heraldic Collection showcases intricate designs inspired by heraldry and coats of arms.
Caran d'Ache is also known for its high-quality ink cartridges, which are available in various colors and formulas, including calligraphy, drawing, and fountain pen inks. The company's commitment to innovation and quality has made Caran d'Ache pens a favorite among writers, artists, and collectors worldwide.
Caran d'Ache pens are not only functional tools but also beautiful objects that reflect the rich history and craftsmanship of Swiss design. Their timeless elegance and superior performance make them an excellent choice for those who appreciate the art of writing.

This is what I use https://www.amazon.com.au/Classic-Century-Plated-Ballpoint-A…
much better design imo. Used to belong to a former Premier of my state who was our neighbour as a kid.
It’s very similar to the pen Dr Chilton uses in Silence of the Lambs. Though I wish I had the solid gold one instead of just gold plated…

    • Nice, made in USA? When I received a (cheaper) Cross fountain pen as a gift a couple of years ago, I was disappointed to discover it was made in China like most of them now.

      • +1

Yup, the dude was that old. New ones say China on the top, which is a shame because the pens are expensive, but I guess China is where the manufacturing experts are now, not in Rhode Island.

        • no longer made in USA? might have to cross them off my list then :(

    • thanks - Cross are my #2, after Caran d'Ache, for a nice ballpoint pen :)

for basic metal ones, i like Zebra, whilst for plastic, Uni-ball Jetstream

      • Yeah this got me thinking about pens and I realised I really need a black pen, was told off recently for using blue ink on a form, so I ordered this one https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00006IECI/ I could have just bought a black refill, but then I wouldn't have an excuse to buy an overpriced pen.
Would have been nice to get it in solid sterling silver, but this will do for now. Silver (or chrome) for black ink and gold for blue ink. Searched for hours but couldn't find this pen any cheaper even used, except on eBay for $50 with a matching mechanical pencil, but it had "VOLVO" engraved on the side..

I'll stick with ballpoint for now, don't want to get too fancy.

i prefer blue over black ink

so I ordered this one https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00006IECI/

nice choice - i think that i have the same somewhere from ages ago in the ballpoint/pencil set

Would have been nice to get it in solid sterling silver, but this will do for now.

yes, that's on my wishlist, with the Palladium Ecridor Retro :)

i no longer have time/patience/handwriting for fountain pens
