Noice but feels like overkill for Australian NBN

    • Does not really relate to NBN.
WIFI 7 and Dual WAN could be used even on 100mb internet speeds.

      • I mean, when one of WiFi 7s big features is higher throughput and the NBN has terrible throughput it's at least kinda related.

People buying a $800 device are more likely to have LAN devices aswell. Media sharing etc.

can we play tetris on that LED board at the front?

  • +12

bound to be a mum or two to buy this accidentally instead of an xbox for christmas

Only thing to be aware of is the "homeshield" service costs like $100 per year… where ASUS equivalents is free for life :

TP-Link's premium security service keeps your home network safe with cutting-edge network and IoT protection.

Free features: 1. Basic Network Security including Security Scan and IoT Device Identification 2. Basic Parental Controls 3. Quality of Service 4. Basic Weekly/Monthly Reports. Visit TP-Link website for more information.

    • I wouldn't really trust either of them, usually when something is free it's because you're the product.

      • +1

Trend gey a copy of your browsing habits… which they use as a sensor for their corporate products. I'm ok with that.

Let's be real. Do we honestly think the wifi police are gonna rock up at the door?

      • +5

The ACMA spectrum police are known to crack down hard on unlicensed radio transmitters. They do respond to reports of radio interference.

        • Is there a history for wifi transmission?

          • @vodamerc: I am not privy to their enforcement reports.

        • +7

I doubt this is powerful enough to interrupt channel 7's broadcast of housewives of OzB

        • +1

ACMA are catching onto people using huge radio devices, such as Microphones transmitting to speakers.

Not a Wireless device like this, Unless you decide to install it directly inside of a TV or Radio Station i really do doubt anybody will even notice.

    • +1

Just pick a channel within the approved range. It won’t get max speed but it’ll be fast enough.

Although the whole point of the 6ghz range is it’s very fast but degrades quickly. So it’s unlikely to cause any interference.

      • The Australian model is sold in Australia.

The US model in this deal is not necessarily the same - in the past it has been possible to buy international WiFi devices that could breach the spectrum rules in Australia.

        • Both versions have wifi 7 with 7ghz band

  • +7

Locally selling for $999, so like $133 difference, wouldn't be better just get it locally for peace of mind consumer guarantee?

    • TGGC will soon have it at the same price. Long before you have a wifi 7 device

    • An extra $133 is a sixth of the price.

Obviously the failure rate isn't going to be anywhere close to one in six - so no, the extra warranty isn't worth anywhere near $133.

  • +15

Buy first.. then wait for years to get other Wifi 7 devices. 😅

    • +3

There is already a very cheaply available M.2 PCIe card with Intel BE200 from Amazon. So users of Intel CPUs can be on Wifi 7 for $40 AUD. It currently does not run on AMD platforms though. Ask me how I know…

      • Time to upgrade to fibre optics.

    • Yep - by which time wifi 8 routers will be available, etc ad infinitum…

  • Reminds me of my Dell XPS 730 H2C, that thing was a behemoth.. 2008..

  • +6

Is it just me or does it look like an ugly office tower block that most of us might have to return to next week?

  • I just don't get why anyone would engage in the router speedrace

    • +2

Same reasons as those that adds speed stripe stickers to boost their car performance?? 🤣

    • Wifi 6e probably for quest 3 owners, but in my experience (with no LOS and degradation) it wasnt worth it,

      • does this mean you would not suggest wifi 6e just for quest 3? was considering a 6e extender/router for wireless airlink.

        • +1

Unless you have line of sight. 5Ghz wifi6 will be enough, other devices being in 2.4ghz if using a router like the AXE75 tplink router (wifi6e on it has (as of v60) compatibility issues with quest 3)

  • +4

Thought it was a new dell xps 730x.

  • +4

since when did routers cost like ~$1k? I remember a good one back in the day would be $200 max….

    • Wait for the Asus ROG XL RGB-OLED Wi-Fi 7 variant retailing for $1500.

I'd be expecting no less that 8 antenna's (external/visible) on such a device.

This being TP-Link, you should expect 2 more firmware updates (max). No, not 2 years worth of updates you spoilt Android owners, 2 additional firmware versions (if you're lucky), after which the device will be disowned like a bastard child…

  • Why pay $866 to import, when you can buy locally (warranty) for $909 (+shipping if required)?

Looks like a bunch of RTX Founder cards stacked together.

  • dont do it

  • It's called the bleeding edge for a reason.

I'll probably get WiFi 7 in a few years, the value for money ratio is ludicrously low currently.

  • WILL THIS GIVE ME CANCER?

    • Yes. Because everything does anyway
