Is It Worth Converting Flybuys Point to Velocity?

Seems like the value converted to Velocity is 50% off Flybuys point e.g. 1000 Flybuys = 500 Velocity

Is it better to keep the Flybuys point or convert it? I have around 200k flybuys

Do you have any plans for the points? 100k Velocity points could be used in a number of different ways for flights, but depends on if you're planning on flying or not.

If you're not planning on flying with them, you're probably better sticking with Flybuys points and using them in their rewards store or at the supermarket checkout.

Well 200k flybuys is worth $1000 off shopping.

Are you looking at booking a trip anytime soon? 100k velocity is enough for business class on Singapore airlines for some 5-6 hour flights and they generally go for >$1000 which would be a better use of points imho, even better value can be had on domestic economy.
I'd wait for a transfer bonus window if you were going down this option.

    Flybuys point or convert it

Wait for transfer bonus offers assuming you have a use for velocity points

  • when I was looking at going to the US in August last year, I looked at using my velocity points, there was basically 1 flight a week with 4 seats available that you could actually use the points on

  • If you wish to pay with points for classic reward seats (not the points+pay ones) on virgin or one of its partners, then it might be worth it. Make sure to check availability before transferring your points to velocity.

Otherwise, use your flybuys points for money off your shopping instead.

  • I wouldn't be transferring them unnless there was a bonus. You can always just transfer in bulk later on, keeping them warehoused in Flybuys seems the safest option for preserving your flexibility.

  • thanks for all the responses! will wait for bonus offers then

  • Yes.

    2000 Flybuys points = $10 = 0.5 cents per point

    $149 SYD-MEL flight, less $42 taxes, $107 redemption
7800 (sometimes less, sometimes more) Velocity points on SYD-MEL flight = 1.372 cents per point

1.372 cents per point halved due to transfer = 0.686 cents per point

So, if you're anything like me and fly often, booking times where prices are the scenario above, and this matters to you, that alone is better redemption value than Flybuys Dollars. Redeption values with Velocity only get better, especially if you upgrade an international flight using Velocity points.

Wait for a transfer bonus before turning on auto transfer. These are somewhat rare, but do happen and can net you a better rate (eg. 1 Flybuys = 0.65 Velocity).

Oh, and be sure you want to redeem on flights only if you transfer - if you want gift cards or similar, stick with Flybuys.

  • If you are looking for flights to Japan, Flybuys to Velocity gives you decent value.
42000 velocity points ($420 of grocery) + ~$80 tax gives you a one-way NH flight to/from Tokyo plus a free domestic leg to any major city. 76000 points for business (hard to come by)
If you think economy redemption is similar to ANA sale price consider this: reward tickets are flexible ($60 to change/cancel); the price is flat all year round - you can score tickets last-minute or during high season (Christmas, cherry blossom, summer, etc) and the price will be the same. Not the case when you buy those tickets with money.
If Japan isn't your tea Velocity has better value (and reward seat availability) on SG. Or fly with Virgin to Fiji or Perth. Plenty of business rewards are bookable.
