Did Someone Try to Break in Last Night (Garage Door)

Hey OzBargain, extremely unsettled. Woke up and went to leave for work and our garage door was opened by about a metre, maybe a bit less. We never use it as the car is just parked on the driveway but we leave the unit on (Don't even know where the remotes are)

We closed it and I've tried to lift it but it was quite heavy and I could barely lift it. Really wondering how they would have done it.

We've since locked it and turned the motor off, but am I paranoid? By chance has anyone been in a similar situation? I can't even 100% be sure it was someone and not some weird electric glitch but is that even possible?

Feeling sad and angry.

Thanks guys

Unlikely unless the door got stuck on something. Or motor happened to seize up half way through opening?

Can you see any damage on the sides as if someone tried to pry it open with a crowbar or something? Also, the door naturally shouldn't be heavy, when lifting it after the door is down and the red string has been pulled, the door should hover by itself at about halfway open. If the door isn't doing that then sounds like a spring or cable issue. Cables or springs could've snapped in the night and caused it to open slightly. Other than that, could be a faulty remote/motor, limits set incorrectly etc, a bit hard to diagnose over the internet.

If you don't feel comfortable with your set up then I can suggest seeing if you can get auto locks installed on your door or getting some vise grips from Bunnings and clamping them onto the tracks to lock the door in place.

    • Thanks for the comment.

I've had to head into work but will check it out tonight for any damage. I was just lifting it from the perspecitve of the criminal — They shouldn't be able to access that emergency string right?

I know very little about garage doors so will have to look for these cables/springs but when we closed it, we just pushed the button and it closed no problem…. so I would assume they are fine?

They shouldn't be able to if the red string hasn't been pulled but with a bit of force, it can open. That's when the auto lock comes into play. You are more than welcome DM me photos of your set up, photo from the back of the room showing the whole door, photos of the springs, cables, motor etc and I can see if anything stands out which might've caused the door to open.

It can still all work when a part is broken, it just puts more strain onto the motor as the springs, cables do most of the work.

        • Thank you — I will PM you when I get home and take some photos. Appreciate this!

    Overreact much?

    • Maybe, but the thought of criminals inside with my family is upsetting.

Yes, criminals somehow lifted your garage door with no damage, came inside, didn't steal anything, and left 🙄

My brother recent had 2 intruders break into his house whilst he , his wife and 2 children were sleeping.

      Not an over raction

It is, because there was no break in.

    • Wait until it happen to you or one of your family then we will see how you think this is overreact. What a troll.

If this happened, I would realise that someone has touched the remote, or something similar, and that no one was in my house.

  • It's a remote sensor glitch. Had this happen to us when there was nearby construction.

If the thief was able to somehow lift the door, why wouldn't the door drop back down?

If you are looking for someone they are probably not very tall or maybe they are the local Limbo dancing champion.

Also, lots of tradies advertise "No job too small"

It was me checking to see if you had a $200k investment parked in the garage

  • Sometimes you can get very old garage door remote systems which work with other people's doors.

If you have a fob, did you have it in your pocket and another object in the pocket press again the button? There was a guy at work who had a BMW and when he sat down other keys were pressed against the button and he'd come out to find his windows half way down and the boot popped open.

Also openning a door from the outside is not hard - lot of youtube videos eg https://www.instructables.com/Prevent-Garage-Door-Break-Ins/
