If anyone is considering to obtain the Comptia A+ Certification over the holidays etc this is a highly recommended hardcover book I found that may help you (cheaper than eBay, fishpond and bookdepository - they are $55-70+). I've been searching high and low for something in-depth to help add to my knowledge of PCs and as I am reading through this the way Mike Meyers explains and uses his awesome analogies really helped me to visualize and understand more about the pc world and how it came to be.

I have done the free online Prof Messers and some CBT nuggets videos but for a deeper understanding and link to how PCs work, I really highly recommended this book for all tech levels as this can even be a source book to refer back to.

For those that don't know, there is a newer Comptia 220-801 and 220-802 exams but this 220-701 and 220-702 exams will still be available through to 31 August 2013 (you can currently choose to do either ones).

    • I'm not sure if that one is hard cover or not.. but yeah the Amazon UK states it is and is cheaper by $1.15

Side note, does Amazon UK ship faster or slower than Amazon US Anyone know?

  • cheaper at amazon uk

  • ah.. thanks guys. Its good to know these other sites.. would never have known booko or even cdkeyprices etc if it wasnt for OZbargain

  • I got my A+ cert… 12 years ago. It has been invaluable. Uh, I mean, completely lacking in value.

    • "lacking in value" as in you didnt need that to get a higher level tech job right?

But I'm sure a PC technician or repairer or contractor would find this A+ cert 'value' to know dont you think?

Whether I need it this cert directly for a higher level PC job, I'm not sure but I probably see the value in this as building on my fundamental knowledge of PC history and how everything works and I'm sure that would be useful in any higher level PC tech etc.

      • I suppose if you wanted to break into the low level PC technician ranks and currently have zero knowledge or skill it might help. When I did it I was 18 and in the lowest possible level IT support (earning a massive $20k/year full time). It did not help me get any further.

  • Does this book even cover Windows 7? My highly educated guess says no.

    • My memory of A+ is that it's mostly basic hardware and OS installation stuff. Since Win7 has been out for 3 years and the procedures would have barely changed at all from Windows Vista I'd be willing to bet, oh, let's say… my house that it would apply to Windows 7.

    • That's the thing, Mike Meyers does go into Windows 7 as a Beyond A+ chapter and quite a few other knowledgeable things that is not required in the A+ exam. So yeah as i mentioned, I still highly recommend this book as a more than enough for A+ or a resource guide to techies.

I wish there's a way to sneek peek at some pages, as I particularly like his writing style in this book! So much better than the purely regurgitated tech jargon of some other books

    • For the record a good portion of the book is written for XP.. Which doesn't really make that much sense…

  • camel shows it is close to as expensive as it ever has been in recent times

    • Yeah i saw that the cheapest its ever been was in 2010 at $30.31 but i guess that wont do anyone good especially if you want to take the exams before the end of the year or early next year but I agree, it also could approach $40.97 again…

  • Title is misleading, 'Comptia A+ Certification' first words, tricky guy

    • lol.. sorry man i just copied and pasted the title from amazon. thats what the book is called.. dont get too deep with it
